Ideas for an fps for my 9 year old niece

Post » Fri Jul 22, 2011 10:51 pm

The german version of Team Fortress 2? That version is awesomely censored from what i've been told.

You can active sillygibs with any version, you just have to go to the game properties and there's a play to put it in. I did it so I can still play even if my six-year-old is awake. Combined with the sort of cartoony graphics I think this would work well for a nine year old.

Battlefront 2.

This, or even the first one, both were great imo :)

Let her play Halo. She can join the rest of the 9 year old girls.

I was gonna suggest Timesplitters too. Can't remember how much blood there is or if you can turn it off, but it's fairly cartoonish (in that some of the bonus characters are animals and snowmen) and jovial so I reckon a kid could enjoy it. I'm talking TS2, btw - that was the best by far.

There is no blood in Timesplitters 2, but there is in Future Perfect. I'll suggest TS2 as well. :)

I let my niece play Fallout 3, but that's because I'm an awful uncle.

I submit Battlefront 2 as well. Again, Halo is good as well. It's mainly alien blood, and the lagnuage is nothing worse than what she'll hear on tv.

Even with those turned off, I don't know if a 9 year old should be playing that... turning off blood doesn't also cut out all scenes of violence.

Admittedly I've only got trailers and gameplay footage to go on so it may be way less violent than I think.

You can turn off both the blood and the gory effects, so even if you cut someone with the chainsaw they would still be completely intact. Also, it's sparks that come out instead of blood.

Thanks everyone for all these great suggestions. I'm going to go do some homework and then make a selection....she won't get Borderlands or Fallout 3, but maybe she'll like what she gets!!! :)

Star Wars Battlefront 2, not an fps, its a Star Wars themed military third person shooter, but I certainly enjoy it. Also, Star Wars Bounty Hunter is a fantastic game, the most violent thing in it is the ability to set people on fire, but they don't lose skin or anything.

Both of these are for the PS2.

On the Star Wars Battlefront 2 games, can you turn off profanity, taunts, and or gore/blood?

There isn't any profanity, taunts or gore in the game. For a shooter it's rather clean.

A thousands times yes. No gore and I don't believe swearing is in it.

It says damn and hell and few times. It got "Mild Language" on the rating. Still, very good for kids.

There's no blood to speak of, and IIRC no profanity either. The closest thing to swearing in that game would be the made up insults from the movies.

Also, if your niece has a 360, original Xbox, or Gamecube, the Jedi Knight games are very fun and pretty tame as well.

EDIT: Forgot about "Damn" and "Hell" in Battlefront, but those can barely be called swear words, so it's not too bad.

Ratchet and Clank and the Jak series is great on the PS2. There's some minor profanity from Jak 2 and beyond, but she would barely notice it.

I do warn you however. These are some of the most rage inducing video games I have ever played in my life. I have rage quit twice on my replay of Jak 2 so far, so... have a spare controller.

+1 for both of these games, really wish Naughty Dog would pick Jak up again.

Their graphics aren't over the top because they were released around 2002-2003 but I played the Star Trek: Elite Force and Star Trek: Elite Force II when I was around your niece's age and loved it so much that I replayed them again 3 or 4 times. They've got holomatch mode too, (bot multiplayer) and it's so fun and addictive. We used to get together with friends and play holomatches for hours. (all girls)

There's no gore, no mature elements other than a mild scene of pixel kissing, it has got a good sci-fi story, good enemies, good shooter, good characters...

She can even play the second one first (it's the more fun one) as there is no significant connection between the two.

I think it's the game that got me into liking shooters and eventually abandoning the Sims, so I really recommend it.

There might be a slight bit of profanity, but overall I can say that the content of that game does not warrant the M rating it has. It's pretty much on the same level as Oblivion.

I know it might not be what you're looking for, but Portal and Portal 2 are fantastic games, suitable for children, and actually somewhat stimulating for developing minds. I only say this because they are technically first person shooters, but not in a very action-filled sort of way.

You can even play with her in co-op in Portal 2, I highly recommend that. Both Whestly and GlaDOS speak proper English (ruling out the accent), should be very fitting for kids.

Medal of Honor - Didn't have any blood from what I remember. It was more like tiny plumes of white mist probably from the bullet impact (dust/smoke).

Deer Hunter and similar hunting games.

Just to clear something up, I'm pretty sure ^he isn't talking about Medal of Honor 2010 there. The most recent Medal of Honor was pretty M-rated through and through, but anything that came out before that isn't too bad. Allied Assault is particularly amazing if you can find yourself a copy.

Yep I was thinking of the old ones. I mean the really OLD ones. The first two for the PlayStation were excellent and had 100's of hours of replay value, single player replay value.

Allied Assault comes with the MoH Anniversary Edition. It's like $20.00 and comes with Allied Assault & expansions, Pacific Assault, and Airborne.

Setting up Allied Assault can be a challenge on a PC with newer hardware. The main configuration file, unamedsoldier.cfg, is automatically generated by the game at first start-up. However, the first Allied Assault game cannot detect the hardware properly and therefore makes an incomplete unamedsoldier.cfg with missing settings. I don't recall doing much tweaking to quake engine games like AA so I haven't been able to play the game properly because in-game setting changes do not save in the .cfg file.

Hm, odd. I was able to run it on my Windows 7 64 bit laptop just by using compatibility mode. But then again I didn't try messing with the settings or anything. The game itself worked just fine.
