Ideas for an fps for my 9 year old niece

Post » Fri Jul 22, 2011 9:34 pm

I know this question is way out there, but my 9 year old niece loves to play Unreal Tournament 2004, and she is allowed to by her parents because I set the game up and turned all taunts and gore off. That way the game is pretty mild by today's standards.

well she always wants to watch me play Borderlands and Fallout 3 etc. and I won't let her because of the gore and mature content, but I thought if I could find a game that lets me clean it up to where it's just fun shooting with no blood, gore or profanity I might buy one for her.

The only one that came quickly to mind was Serious Sam II, if I could mod it for no mature stuff. Does anyone know of other games that could be modded so she could play it the way she plays UT2004?

She's hard core for her age, but I love her and I have to protect her until she is old enough to handle the modern day grown up games. Also, there might be a game out there that is a shooter more directly aimed at the kid's market, no pun intended. : )

Well if you think of anything I'd love to hear your ideas.

Thanks a million, Gardenia :)

Hmm... maybe Halo 3? It's been a long time since I played it but I don't remember any profanity, and you're mostly shooting aliens so any blood is alien blood. I can't think of a completely clean game, but I don't play many first person shooters.

There might be a slight bit of profanity, but overall I can say that the content of that game does not warrant the M rating it has. It's pretty much on the same level as Oblivion.

I know it might not be what you're looking for, but Portal and Portal 2 are fantastic games, suitable for children, and actually somewhat stimulating for developing minds. I only say this because they are technically first person shooters, but not in a very action-filled sort of way.

You don't need to mod Serious Sam, there are options to turn gore off, turn it green, or make it so enemies explode into confetti when they die.

Also, Zeno Clash maybe? I can't remember if there is any actual gore in it though.

Also; when I was nine my uncle would play Doom with us at night to get us all terrified, I know it'll probably traumatize her for life, but try something with a horror slant, maybe not Amnesia level horror, but scaring your nieces and nephews to death is a basic human right.

duck hunt?

seriously though, try any james bond game.

I know you probably also did not want lame to be in there but that kind of goes with the whole none mature content fps.

Team Fortress 2's cartoony style means that the gibs aren't overly gory (you can see them http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Gibs, but I believe you can also set it so that the gibs are turned into things like birthday presents, confetti, etc (although that might just be a server setting, not something you can set yourself). It also has some fairly mild swearing in it (things like bastard, ass, hell, etc.), you can see the various in-game voiced lines https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikiquote/en/wiki/Team_Fortress_2#In-game_commands_and_responses.

Timesplitters is pretty rad. I don't remember anything overly bad about it...

I was gonna suggest Timesplitters too. Can't remember how much blood there is or if you can turn it off, but it's fairly cartoonish (in that some of the bonus characters are animals and snowmen) and jovial so I reckon a kid could enjoy it. I'm talking TS2, btw - that was the best by far.

It's not an FPS, more a third-person platformer with some minor shooting elements, but your niece may enjoy Psychonauts anyway. I certainly did. :)

No gamer should have to grow up without the original Half Life as a part of their life. Get it as soon you think she's ready for it.

Plus it just happens to be one of the most epic, action filled, AND accessible fps's ever! Plus, its Star Wars.

Although isn't easy to find for a reasonable price for the old consoles though. The only physical copy I found was for £20 on the orginal Xbox.

If she would be willing to try a 3rd person shooter, you can turn off the blood and language in Gears of War 2.

Battlefield 1942 is pretty tame when it comes to gore. There's blood but it's hardly realistic. Just enough to let you know you hit someone.

Even with those turned off, I don't know if a 9 year old should be playing that... turning off blood doesn't also cut out all scenes of violence.

Admittedly I've only got trailers and gameplay footage to go on so it may be way less violent than I think.

Another vote for battlefron 2. It was an amazing game. Allthough I prefered 1, becase I loved instantly being able to use the dark trooper to reach objectives. Even if the heros cheated in the game and couldnt be killed unless you throw a grenade and make them fall.
