Ideas on the addition of Crossbows in Dawnguard?

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 9:47 pm

Here's hoping for several tiers of crossbow, it would be a tad upsetting if they were outclassed at later levels because they just aren't dealing as much damage as a Daedric bow...

Honestly, if they become outclassed, I think i may still use a crossbow. just for the badassery.

As seen in the trailer, the crossbows seem to be 1h weapons as they are sheathed on the side of the player char - however reloading appears to be 2h of course.

It would be cool if there were conjured Crossbows. But I highly doubt that will happen. I think I'll just stick with Bound Bow.

Really? In the trailer it looked like the Crossbow was on the back.

There's an image showing a player char riding a horse, you can see a cropssbow on his side.

I'm curious about the damage. It should be way higher to offset the slow recharging time. A well placed stealth shot should be able to down any foe but a few damage sponges.

Crossbows are infamous for their pain of a reload, hope it isn't that way in Skyrim aswell.

What made the crossbow deadly was a simple farmer could pick one up and kill an armored knight with a decade of combat experience. A bowman may have had ten times the rate of fire but it took years of training. Crossbows made killing easy

I think they would be awesome for stealth, they would be so much cooler!

One little press of a trigger and *Pew* your personnal bolt has been realeased. I just think thats more stealthy than pulling back a big piece of string, clunking an arrow on to it and then just letting go.

It's louder.

I prefer the long reload times, I would think that the crossbows are more damaging and more accurate, but with a longer reload time and slightly less range than Bows. I should think that some skill perks will be added to the Archery tree to add range, damage and perhaps a slightly quicker reload time. But I'm guessing the standard will be sniping one target with the crossbow, switching to melee when his pals attack.

I only hope you get Iron Sighting when you pull the left trigger/right click.

Given that the bolts/arrows are effected by gravity iron sights would make for more difficult aiming then crosshairs.

Hopefully they're one-handed. If they're slow to reload, there's a good chance I'll be taking a few hits before I can fire off another bolt.

Being able to use a spell or one-handed melee weapon as well would probably take some of the edge off.
(Plus, firing a crossbow one-handed would look cool... maybe they could add a perk for it at least?)

No.
It was confirmed that crossbows are two-handed by the PR of Beth in a tweet.
So no dual-wielding crossbow murder machine for you :P

It's in his hand.

EDIT: Look, specifically when he says "Dawngawwwwwdddd" there's a guy walking to the Dawnguard keep or whatever it will be called with a crossbow sheathed on his back.

new skill tree?

or would they be added to the archery skill tree? that'd be strange as people may have 100 archery, why add perks to something new.

i'm pretty [censored]in' excited for crossbows, and horse fighting, too. I think those two small things in themselves are something that will add a lot of spice to combat, large and small fights.

do you think crossbows will be a stealthy weapon? so many questions! give me your theories.
Big question:
Is there a crossbow for all the sets? (steeel, iron, ebony, daedric, dragonbone, elven, dwemer)

Even if you could dual wield how would you reload?

If you wanna dual wield crossbows go play Diablo!
A one handed crossbow makes no sense really... How do you reload it? It's not like a pistol.

I just hope there are a variety of crossbow types, steel, glass, ebony, elven etc and not just restricted to the one we saw in the trailer.

Then I hope after a few hundred years progress has been made and the people of Skyrim have been a bit more adventurous with glass and what not....

You're not supposed to reload them in a fight. They are quick shots you can use to take out a guard in your way so you can get to a target.

I don't think you have to worry, I'm sure there won't just be one crossbow. I think the specific type they showed us was iron or perhaps steel.. maybe even just a default Dawnguard crossbow, but I'm sure there will be all the tiers, iron through daedric.

K, and suppose there is more than 2 guards. You don't have 3 hands to shoot three crossbow bolts at 3 different guards. Third guard cuts your face off.

The point being is that picking off vampires with a crossbow sounds pretty sweet.
Horse combat is something i wanted since oblivion. I had high expectations of skyrim and it took my breath as soon as stepped out of helgen into the wide open world. Bethesda delivered a game experience i have never felt before. They keep adding new ways to experience a game that is an adventure of epic proportions. Crossbows are definitly a way to feel like a vampire hunter.

Um yeah- that would be a bows job, i think you are failing to grasp the purpose of the crossbow.

Reloading it in battle is a terrible choice if
You use a blade, its one and done. If you are just an archer? Then you need a bow for this situation.

I'm thinking there will be different kinds of crossbows, like small crossbow or light crossbow. Then a regular "crossbow", or a medium crossbow. Then they would add a heavy crossbow. And not only the different forms, but different types like steel, iron, elven, daedric, et cetera. And different types of bolts like they do with arrows, but we should be able to craft them.
