Ideas on the addition of Crossbows in Dawnguard?

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 9:27 pm

new skill tree?

or would they be added to the archery skill tree? that'd be strange as people may have 100 archery, why add perks to something new.

i'm pretty [censored]in' excited for crossbows, and horse fighting, too. I think those two small things in themselves are something that will add a lot of spice to combat, large and small fights.

do you think crossbows will be a stealthy weapon? so many questions! give me your theories.

They are part of the Archery skill tree. It was confirmed by the leaked GI article.

I believe it's already confirmed that crossbows will use the archery skill tree, but the fact they are coming in Dawnguard is pretty awesome anyway.

Well apparently all of the perks in archery count toward your crossbow, so I don't think anything will be altered.

It might add a few more perks or some might be altered, we'll just have to wait and see.

I hope it more of an Assassin's Creed crossbow style. I liked how it was medium to small in size and qucik to reload. A big bulky realistic crossbow that could only get off one bolt a minute would not very fun.

I think a happy medium between the two would be good. I think the idea of it is to be a more powerful, louder, but slower Bow. It'd be pretty [censored] if they made it slow as all hell, but I'm sure it may not be AC style. That'd be pretty cool though. who knows? I'm sure they'll find ways to balance it all pretty well.

about horse fighting, how do you think archery will fare on horseback? I think that'd be pretty difficult and awkard, if moving. And even if stationary, whats the point?

If it deals one hell of damage with this one single shot (what would be very realistic for a heavy crossbow) I see no prob with that.

That pretty much makes it a medeval rocket launcher. Packs a hell of a punch but can only be relied on once maybe twice in a fight. I would want something lighter and faster. Not as fast or faster than a bow. Crossbows are supposed to be slower than bows. but I want to take out most if not all of the enimies approching me before they can swing at me.

I think they would be awesome for stealth, they would be so much cooler!

One little press of a trigger and *Pew* your personnal bolt has been realeased. I just think thats more stealthy than pulling back a big piece of string, clunking an arrow on to it and then just letting go.

Crossbows are alot louder than bows. If anything they would be less stealthy. Though not unusalbly so, you should still be able to most of the same things you could use with a bow.

Crossbows should be an assassin's weapon. A high profile assassination weapon. So one shot, takes longer than a regular bow to reload, but that target is DEAD. If your archery is good enough and you sneak attack, that target WILL BE DEAD. So I'd like a crossbow that does ridiculous amounts of damage but takes a long time to reload. But from the trailer, it seems that it takes only slightly longer than a bow since there was no cranking animation. Only the bolt being placed at the top.

This would suit my character perfectly. I only intend to use it once as i'm entering the fight, and after my shot i'll just pull out my hammer.

Maybe they will have heavy crossbows and light crossbows?

Probably not, I mean, they don't have any sort of Heavy or Light differentiation for weapons. just armor, y'know?

edit: *heavy crossbows

Cross bows act exactly like bows except

A: You load a bolt after you shoot, not before, meaning when you are traveling around, you already have a peice of ammo in your crossbow, rather than having to notch it like a regular bow
B:However, crossbows take longer to reload
C: Crossbows also stagger the enemy.

My guess is that Crossbows will also do more damage, but have a lower range and slower movement speed when aiming.

However, other than these changes, it works exactly like a bow, so making an crossbow perk tree would be redundent.

Yeah, word on the redundancy thing. the archery perk may honestly stay the same except for a few added "...and crossbows".

I wonder what the crossbow models will look like. i'm sure some dope mods will come out almost as soon as possible on Steam making some pretty badass crossbows. i just hope the vanilla ones are pretty interesting looking. its not so big of a deal but I wanna exterminate with style. some of the vanilla weapons in skyrim are pretty ugly.

Something with a strong shot but long to reload would be perfect for me, open up with a killing blow then go in with my swords... Perfect.

i'm just hoping it has decent damage, i'd hate to have to use my superborderlineglitch smithing/enchanting apparel just to do decent damage with it,

Actually crossbows have just as much range if not more range over a bow due to the added force that is used when launching the bolt.

As long as you are able to have a readied bolt (which you should) the crossbow user can act faster than a bow user because they do not need to draw to act. (For the 1 shot you have obviously)

Advantages if crossbows have the readied bolt (I.E. swap to crossbow and fire) :

1. Making things like paralysis poisoned bolts quick to fire becomes a valid tactic- since you would loose major time poisoning a bow and drawing and shooting, even with quickdraw and especially with a heavy bow. A crossbow could deliver this instantaneously.

2. One free high damage shot per battle (even a melee first battle) back away- flip out crossbow, and get a free high damage hit (could be done after a power attack is dodged)

3. And let us not forget... multiple crossbows - multiple quickshots.

If it is implemented to have a readied bolt, this weapon can really add some spice to the game.

Or like Diablo, where you can fire 100 bolts in a second. /sarcasm off
I agree, I loved how crossbows worked in AC.

Hopefully they're one-handed. If they're slow to reload, there's a good chance I'll be taking a few hits before I can fire off another bolt.

Being able to use a spell or one-handed melee weapon as well would probably take some of the edge off.
(Plus, firing a crossbow one-handed would look cool... maybe they could add a perk for it at least?)
