Isn't this game a bit overwhelming?

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 9:51 am

It seems like after playing through a couple of times my quest log is staying a lot more manageable. Knowing which characters give out quests ahead of time lets me stick to the ones that seem appropriate for my level, and for the character I'm playing. I'm really hoping though that the SkyUI team takes a crack at the quest log in the near future, being able to sort quests by things like proximity and faction would be great. Maybe somebody could also go in and edit the quest stage descriptions to be a bit more... descriptive (though with the number of quests being well into the hundreds, that'd be a monumental task.)

If you keep playing you learn a ton. If you want to learn more about the backstory/lore there are plenty of sites and even a subforum here you can go to to learn more.

I hear you, but shouldn't that story be told in the game?

i know what you mean. this playthrough i've tried to finish each quest as soon as i get it to keep my quest journal as clean as possible. I'm hoping it will help with some of the bugs too.

That avatar's from Dark Crystal. Haven't seen that movie since I was like 4 so that's about all I remember, pretty recognizable face though.

Same. I know there is a civil war. No clue about what side to take even though I have had many conversations with people about it....After awhile, it just all blends together until I have no clue what I am fighting for.

I don't mind the number of quests... in fact, I love that there are so many. My biggest problem is the journal doesn't even bother to tell you where the quest takes place half the time. They fully expect you to have compass markers active.

Something about dragons? And I'm not acting dumb, all I know about the story is that it's about dragons. O_o

Compass markers aren't the problem...it's the reason behind the quests that you are given. On your way to a quest, you may pick up 3 or 4 other side quests and decide to come back to them later, cause you are on a quest....well once you are done with your main quest, you still have these other quests in your journal, with no backstory. Like, "Locate Grimsever" ..... I don't know what Grimsever is or who I am locating it for! Or why!

Simple text would explain it to me. Just let me replay the conversation that led up to the quest, and I would understand....or SOMETHING!

Been playing for about 80 hours or so...I love the game. Luckily, I haven't had any of the problems many people have (lag and such) and I'm playing on the PS3. My only complaint is that there is no "re-telling". What I mean by that is there is no backstory to what I'm supposed to do. I don't know why I have to do the things I have in my quest log.

A simple solution:

Allow the player to see the conversation that led up to the quest.

I'm not saying too many quests are a bad thing, but when I have so many that I cant keep track of them...and the only clue I have is "Locate Grimsever" it kinda takes me out of the story a bit.

I would love to locate Grimsever...But first....Wtef is Grimsever and why do I have to locate it?

Also all the names in this game....I don't know who these people are talking about half of the time..I know I should, cause I kinda recognize the name, but how am I supposed to form an opinion on someone when I can't remember what the last guy told me about him 3 days ago...

What I propose is a Dragonborn's Journal. That is unique to each player depending on how he plays the game. It would tell you what you have learned during your playthrough.

That is all.

Perhaps you do not know about pausing and the quest menu? Press on a quest and it'll show you where to go. Pressing on an already pressed quest will take the helper off.

I am quite fluent in the pause menu thank you very much.

Perhaps you don't know about the 30 or so miscellaneous quests I have where, yes, it will tell me where to go, but I want to know why. I am aware that I can get an arrow on my compass to tell me where to go for any particular quest. A little bit of a "refreshing my memory" would be nice though as to WHY I need to get said item and WHO I am getting it for...instead of just the "Get item X" in my quest log.

For the Grimsever, if you talk to the girl who gave the quest, she would tell you the story about why it is important to her and is the same with most quest if you talk to the npc after they assigned you the quest in most cases.

Just take your time and play at your own pace. You won't be overwhelmed and you'll have a lot of game ahead of you :)

I appreciate the help, but really, I have no clue who gave me that quest, just like most of my other quests...

Don't get me wrong, I am loving this game. But I just think it would draw me in more if I knew why I was travelling to a far off dungeon, instead of just doing it cause it was in my journal.

I hope the devs do something about this, cause a few lines of text about a quest would do wonders.

I agree that the miscellaneous quests could use some sort of small description to help remember what it was about and who/where it was from. Like a previous poster I've begun to do some quests as I receive them. It's kind of fun like that.

The misc quest could use some more description, but usually they are in that category because they are simple taks. I think thats why Beth set them up to be categorized as such.
