Isn't this game a bit overwhelming?

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 6:02 am

Been playing for about 80 hours or so...I love the game. Luckily, I haven't had any of the problems many people have (lag and such) and I'm playing on the PS3. My only complaint is that there is no "re-telling". What I mean by that is there is no backstory to what I'm supposed to do. I don't know why I have to do the things I have in my quest log.

A simple solution:

Allow the player to see the conversation that led up to the quest.

I'm not saying too many quests are a bad thing, but when I have so many that I cant keep track of them...and the only clue I have is "Locate Grimsever" it kinda takes me out of the story a bit.

I would love to locate Grimsever...But first....Wtef is Grimsever and why do I have to locate it?

Also all the names in this game....I don't know who these people are talking about half of the time..I know I should, cause I kinda recognize the name, but how am I supposed to form an opinion on someone when I can't remember what the last guy told me about him 3 days ago...

What I propose is a Dragonborn's Journal. That is unique to each player depending on how he plays the game. It would tell you what you have learned during your playthrough.

That is all.

I liked how the Journal was in Morrowind. Even Oblivion had more detailed steps than Skyrim does. The miscellaneous quests especially have very little detail to them, and I also find myself often forgetting why I have to do what it's telling me to do.

i know what you mean. this playthrough i've tried to finish each quest as soon as i get it to keep my quest journal as clean as possible. I'm hoping it will help with some of the bugs too.

I agree.. quest log, especially the misc. quests need to have the string of events so I know why the heck I want to go to where ever and recover the whatever from who ever... I can't remember why I need to do half the thing in the list. at least the bigger quests have some backstory listed, but not much. it was better in oblivion where it kept every step of the quest listed.

Yea I liked the Morrowind journal too. It did just what the OP is asking for.

Never played Morrowind, but in Oblivion I did't seem to have this problem.

The misc quests have no info at all attaced to them...kinda svcks if you don't do it right away and then you forget what the point was.

I wish the journal would tell you who the quest is for and why.

Alot of people seem to think that this game is severely underwhelming, that the content is somehow miniscule and arbitrary.

Good to see someone else playing on PS3 with no problems.

The Quest Log is a real mess to be sure.

Exactly! That is my only issue with this game so far. Maybe I should keep my own pen and paper journal....but I'm too lazy.

In Morrowind there was a description on what you had to do on each stage of the quest, and (provided you asked people for information) specific things like names and places could be clicked on and then the journal would tell you more information that people had told you about the specific thing. Not sure how much sense that makes reading back on it.

Underwhelming? I can't see that. I have so many quests active I can't keep track....which is why I would like some sort of journal. Tell me why I have to locate item "x" or kill leader "y". Would make it much more satisfying.

Just saying, I'm not of that mindset per se.

Could some things use some work? Sure.

I go through something different every character I make, even after thinking I couldn't possibly have missed anything in the character prior. There are a thousand minor things, its a real subtle game in many aspects.

I didn't assume you were amongst those that thought that. Just stating my opinion.

Pretty impressive you did that...I am on my first character and I'm sure I've missed a hundred things already!

Back on topic...how hard would it be to let me know why I have to do said quest? (give me a log of text leading up to the quest). Is it really that hard to do?

Works fine for me. Try playing on the PS3. No problems there. :)

Although I did prefer the Morrowind journal, I agree with your point of view. But having at least something similar to Oblivion would be crucial.

Is improving the Journal this part of the UI project I once read on the forums? I guess not, mainly due to the massive amount of info they would have to add to each quest. But it would definitely be worth doing.

I agree. SOMETHING to tell me what the point of me risking my life would be a step in the right direction. Recover "x" with a map icon isn't enough to make me care.

I would like to see a journal like in Warhammer online. That would be a good fit in Skyrim me thinks.

we already had this in morrowind, and to a lesser extent oblivion. i guess it was too spreadsheety and unnecessarily complicated though, not knowing why i am doing anything is so much more realistic and adds so much to my RP experience.

Seems as though they thought everyone would just drop whatever their doing and do these quests...Problem is I often find more misc quests while doing misc quests. Also they often lead you far away, so its kind of a pain to do a quest that completely takes you out of the way of what your currently doing.

The quest log is a fail. Reminds me of the rest of the UI...
