Item Degradation

One man's "tedious micro-management" is another man's valuable roleplaying mechanic. That certainly won't stop Bethesda from taking even more away, though.

Exactly. I have FNV heavily modded so that the repair/craft lists are expanded. I actually have fun collecting various junk items and scrap that I can use to repair/craft later. Some people play video games to go BOOM BOOM BOOM and others like to sink in and be immersed, taking it slowly. And should I not feel like repairing a certain item? I drop it and go looking for another one, or buy it. I know--who knew you could actually loot and buy things in an RPG?

No reason whatsoever to have taken it out except to make TES easier.

However, since this sort of hobo repairman/mechanic savant style of gameplay may not suit the world of TES in quite the same way, I think the current implementation of Blacksmithing is preferable to the annoyance factor of the arbitrary armorer grind of previous installments.
They still could've implemented it in Skyrim by just having the option appear when you visit a blacksmith. You pay a nominal fee and you get your equipment repaired. Gold really isn't an issue in the game.
