Journalists don't seem to be talking much about the no-kill

Because most of the brain dead idiots just want to see "BOOM. SMASH. EXPLODE. DESTROY."

Booming, smashing, exploding, and destroying things out of self-preservation is fun in Fallout. :flamethrower:

I ain't killing just for killing either, I just do it to protect "The Family".

Its nothing personal, its just business ;)

Ok Don Coreleone ;)

I'm a bit annoyed with the pacifists somehow claiming that wanting to burn/smash/destroy/blow up things somehow equates to being brain dead. It's a violent game... maybe The Sims is more suited for your style?

Nothing wrong with options.

I just don't think it's fair for someone to say "you're an idiot for being violent in a violent game".

I can totally see trying to play New Vegas without actually killing anyone. It would be an interesting challenge... as well as a great way to practice pickpocketing all the folk you knock unconscious. Sneaking around the Mojave Wasteland, knocking people out, taking their stuff and all the while, planning and plotting... and oh crap it's a Deathclaw run! :ahhh:

I think killing in the game is fun and a big part of it but my characters always kill according to their views. Like an NCR guy would kill Caesar's Legion but probably not other people.

Sir its a video game (we like to kill things in video games because its something most of us [hopefully] will never do), and its kind of ironic hearing this from a guy with Kratos for an avatar.

Well, first of all, this is an old avatar. I had no idea I was even still using it until I made this post. :P

Secondly, God of War isn't a role-playing game. You play as this dude Kratos who is really angry and wants revenge against the gods. Not too many ways to play that game and there shouldn't be. :P

And the reason I want to play through Fallout New Vegas without killing anything is because I like challenge.

The point of the post though is that nobody seems to be talking about how much freedom there is in this game and that includes the option to not kill anybody. And I would say also that they should mention that you can kill everything in the game (except children) as well. Not too many games let you do that.

Of course, if there was no ESRB we could probably be allowed to kill the children as well. :P

I'm kind of disappointed in that. I would think that would be a good talking-point for the game about how many options the player has to get through the game. In fact most articles seem to be focusing on the different ways of dealing death to people. I find that a sad commentary on our society.

I, for one, at least, am planning on going the pacificst route on my first playthrough as well as playing on hardcoe mode.

Anybody else planning on doing that as well or am I alone? :(

Say's the guy with Kratos in his avatar

Video games do not make our society look bad :slap:

And yea it would I guess of been nice to have some more emphasis on how KO's and not killing anyone throughout the game works.

Why would I do that? I can not kill people in real life. Video games are about doing things you cant really do IRL (or at least, cant do IRL w/o consequences), so theres no way in fiery place i'll go the pacifist route.

hmm in a world where just about anything or anyone wants to kill ya and u wanna be a pacifist?
Well, pacifism is hardly pacifism if you ditch it every time someone attacks you.

The Sims is a violent game. I must have killed more people with fireplace accidents than with plasma rifles.

The fact of the matter is, this is an RPG, so the more ways to play the game, the better it is. I occasionally like to play an unarmed character for the challenge of surviving without weaponry, whetehr that means relying on sneaking or having a companion to protect you. It is hardly a matter of sniping at people and calling them pacifists because they happen to want to try a character with a more sedate pace.

It's like the first time I played Deus Ex; I killed every terrorist I found in the game. Second playthrough though, I started thinking about how to avoid the terrorists and knock them unconscious without killing them. Gladly it was a feasible tactic. It felt like a challenge to be able to avoid problems without using violence, even the plot of the story changed a bit from doing this (your brother in the game talked to you in another way/tone, as well as other teammates did). In F:NV, I'll try a more indirect approach to a problem just to see the freedoms available, but if hell breaks loose, you bet I'll have that gun ready from the get go (maybe a couple mines already placed at predetermined places, just to make sure <_< )

I hear ya. It does kinda point out a few things that are off in today's society. The internet was meant to provide access to information, hopefully creating a better, smarter society. But instead, it was contorted and turned into something totally different from the original intention, thus desensitizing people to violent and sixual acts. Some people became casualties, some were luckier.

I, for one, think people should be less sensitive about six anyway. At least, here in America.

Also, I'd love to have more non-violent options in videogames, but verbal conflict resolution generally requires a unique and context-specific solution each time, while violence allows you to use a relatively small number of interventions in a wide number of situations. PnP games are much better at allowing this than CRPGs. Someday when they make an Unknown Armies game and I can play as a Trickster avatar and screw over my enemies with well chosen words instead of bullets I'll be happy to do it. Until then, pew pew pew!

So you are mad at people for wanting to play videos to do stuff they couldn't do in real life, and to satisfy our innate desire for a little bit of violence?

Sorry, I don't play video games for intellectual stimulation or to run away from enemies and solve problems with words. I play for fun. Go read a book if you want something besides Boom, Smash, Explode, Destroy.

And everyone who enjoys playing violent video games is a brain dead idiot? And you still like Fallout WITHOUT ANY violence? I mean, sure, it's an option to go pacifist, but not the main event or purpose of this game.

You misunderstand what I said.

I'm not saying you're a brain dead idiot for enjoying the violence. I enjoy the violence as well. I'm saying, I see journalists who completely disregard all the effort that went into the writing, dialog, and story. They imply that the only thing that really matters is the violence, which in reality is only a small sliver in what makes Fallout so great.

Why would you choose Fallout 3 if you wanted to play a game without the use of violence? I know some people said that they would like the challenge but that still doesn't make much sense to me in a game like Fallout 3. Most things and people in the game want to kill you. Playing a game of running for your life every minute doesn't sound very fun. You can't reason with most enemies and this kind of playstyle would severely limit where you can go and what you can do.

Sure there are some quests where you can chose a peaceful route and thats great. In FO3 I remember meeting up with those vampire people. Instead of killing them all I decided to leave them alone. Having this kind of choice is cool but it can't be done with in most encounters.

By the way, stop complaining about video game violence! Why are you on the Fallout forums if you don't like violent video games? Go play Hello Kitty Island Adventures you friggin hippies!

I don't mind the journalists doing it the way they are. Couple reasons why.
-Most are just doing their job, and that's what the majority of viewers want to see.
-Displaying the non-violent route is more time consuming, and will reveal details about the story, and a good enough instance for display needs to be picked for each vid.
-Fallout isn't a giant by pop standards. It sells great, had tons of fans, but not every gamer knows about it. So, most are interested by battle and setpieces, depending on background.

So, I understand why. At least we know it's there and is an option. :tops:

Y'know, I've re-read my OP a few times now and I don't see where some of you are getting this idea that I hate violent games.

What I'm talking about is there is an OPTION to play through it without killing anybody but the only thing the journalists seem to be focusing on is the killing and I think that's unfair to the game.

The internet was designed by the military to keep the lines of communication open in case of a nuclear attack.

And you have an awfully dark view of the internet. Its just a reflection of society, there is good and bad. Its your choice where you go, it always has been. Its simply easy access to information. Ugliness and atrocity have been around forever.
