Journalists don't seem to be talking much about the no-kill

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 11:13 pm

I'm kind of disappointed in that. I would think that would be a good talking-point for the game about how many options the player has to get through the game. In fact most articles seem to be focusing on the different ways of dealing death to people. I find that a sad commentary on our society.

I, for one, at least, am planning on going the pacificst route on my first playthrough as well as playing on hardcoe mode.

Anybody else planning on doing that as well or am I alone? :(

Because most of the brain dead idiots just want to see "BOOM. SMASH. EXPLODE. DESTROY."

I really sigh in disgust when a game journalist will start talking about the game and go "BUT YOU KNOW OF COURSE WE'RE ALL JUST HERE FOR THE KILLING AM I RIGHT???" and go on to talk for twelve hours about shooting dudes in the face.

I'll be somewhat like you, OP. I'm pacifistic in nature and my first character will do same actions I would (as it's my first playthrough I can follow my first reactions, on later ones I can choose other options)

When I was playing Fallout 3 I wanted to keep as many people around the capital wasteland as possible even if I meant I missed out on some cool equipment

I like the fact this game will allow me to explore in ways I would be unable to in real life.

In my opinion No killing would be boring, But that is me, Each to their own, everyone has a different perspective and I respect that.

I want to have a go at making a Wasteland field medic-type character (second or third playthrough, once I see what kind of Medical skillchecks there are), so it'll be good for me.

HOWEVER, every single game "journalist" so far has used their limited time to shoot people and blow stuff up, instead of trying to report newsworthy things. It svcks, but them's the breaks.

So you are mad at people for wanting to play videos to do stuff they couldn't do in real life, and to satisfy our innate desire for a little bit of violence?

Sorry, I don't play video games for intellectual stimulation or to run away from enemies and solve problems with words. I play for fun. Go read a book if you want something besides Boom, Smash, Explode, Destroy.

And everyone who enjoys playing violent video games is a brain dead idiot? And you still like Fallout WITHOUT ANY violence? I mean, sure, it's an option to go pacifist, but not the main event or purpose of this game.

I think it would be interesting to try it. Maybe. I probably won't do it though.

It just really pisses me off when these other people equate wanting to kill stuff in a video game with stupidity. That's pretty stupid in itself, and kind of pretentious if you ask me.

"Oh, you actually killed enemies in Fallout? Ho ho oh, quite humourous. Only simpletons and peasant act in such a manner. Hand me my monocle and champagne, and let us be off to the world of New Vegas to discuss literature, current events, and politics!"

Cause, you know, its much better to just go on forums about a game based around violence, war, and role-playing such a character and talk down to those who like this game, and others like it, for what they are.

Sir its a video game (we like to kill things in video games because its something most of us [hopefully] will never do), and its kind of ironic hearing this from a guy with Kratos for an avatar.

But yes the perks and many other abilities we have seen are more for the combat of things. Would have been nice to have a Vid or interview on how things for pacifists are.

You guys don't seem to understand a key point. These game journalists only have a limited amount of time to play the game, usually only as long as one hour. It's not that they're all idiots who only want to kill things, it's that killing things is the best way to experience as much of the game's mechanics and locations in the very limited amount of time they have. In the amount of time it takes to go through a single quest in a single location peacefully, a game journalist can explore multiple locations and get a better feel for how the game plays by killing.

Also, expecting them to truly not kill anything is ridiculous. They don't have the benefit of God Mode, if they ran away at the sight of every single enemy they saw, which is apparently what you guys mean by "no-kill," you guys would be complaining about that just as much as you are about this.

I'd say the potential to finish the game at least a minimum amount of violence is a testament to Obsidian's priority on allowing as many paths through an objective as possible. But it's also just one of many paths through the game. And I also have a feeling it would be an incredibly hard one to actually accomplish. (For example, off the top of my head, it's going to be hard to do much exploring anywhere without a high degree of Sneak skill, or lots of running away from things - the same is likely going to be true for random encounters, as well.)

For me, when I head of this, my first thought was more along the lines of "oh cool, there's a high degree of freedom in this game to approach a crisis in various ways." And lest we forget - (apparently) the only thing you had to kill in Fallout 3 was the Radscorpion at the very beginning of the game. So in relation to Fallout: New Vegas, this is kind of old news by now.

Now, I still have absolutely no idea how you'd manage to get through Fallout 3 that way - but apparently you can do it. I kind of have a feeling that the same is going to hold true for New Vegas, as well. My first character is going to be avoiding confrontation, sure - but I have a feeling I'm going to be needing some weaponry skills to survive things like random attacks and searching through dungeons, etc. My guess is the "total pacifist" path is going to be one of those things reserved for only the most dedicated players - and not something to be attempted lightly.

It WOULD be boring to go through the entire game with out killing anything..

Especially with all those new guns and what not laying around.

Fighting isn't everything about the game obviously, but hell if some gang banger comes pointing his gun at my head I'm going to kill the son of a [censored]!

I am also a pacifist in RL. Problem is im not in it for killing or saving. Im gonna play hardcoe mode, and any or all things that stand in my path will pay. With that said... These characters are not real not one single one of them will "Actually" die. So dont think of em as people think of em as Virtual things.

You pacifist people are just a bunch of pansies :P (JK)
I don't plan on killing everyone because I can now, I'll do what I have to I do think it's a bit silly to play a game like this on your first playthrough and not kill anyone. I don't plan on going all Texas chainsaw massacre, but hell, I want to shoot something, they added all these new weapons and spent a lot of time on every little bit, not so people could just stare at it... essentially. I think it's cool to not have to kill anyone if you don't want to, but really, on your FIRST playthrough?
Maybe on your second though it's just my opinion, it's your game, I'm just saying give the weapons a go first.

I do suppose you could pick it up, save, kill them, reload save.

Pacifism is not gonna sell any copies. They might even lose sales by talking about it, making people think there isnt much combat in the game. People wanting to be pacifists in FPS's has got to be one of the smallest niche's of all time.
