I just bumped into an NPC who was voiced by an Irish person

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 12:34 am

Who thought this was a good idea? I was so taken aback by the utter awfulness of the accent I didn't pay any attention at all to what was said and had to ask all the questions again.

Why not just have the Irish person do an Irish accent? Is there anything worse in videogames than a voice-over person trying and failing miserably to imitate an accent in the hilarious belief it makes them sound more interesting?

Who gives the green light for this crap?

So yeah, Bethesda, please don't make someone who already sounds stupid go to extraordinary lengths to sound even more stupid. That's my tip for the day.

It wasn't entirely dissimilar to Farengar's. It was in the first town you get to can't remember her name. Same person pops up in a few other towns, twice in Whiterun. Hilariously awful accent. I'll play it tomorrow and take the NPC names down.

I never understand why they have people doing accents that aren't their own in these games. English, Irish, Scottish voice 'actors' seem favoured in fantasy RPG's which is fine but they never do their own accents. I've heard Scots trying to sound English and English trying to sound Scottish ffs just lol at this nonsense.

It's when they try to sound Spanish or French that I think the producer's really ought to be working in MacDonalds I assume they do what they're told to after all.

well, lets hear it.

I will tomorrow. In the meantime I'll give you a clue she kept trilling her R's when she clearly would have felt more at home saying 'der's more te Oireland dan dis'.

Can't be as weird as the elves who are all Australian/NZ versions of Joshua Graham from FO:NV.

Yes, avec ridiculous accent. There have been quite a few stupid accents in the game so far. Maybe Beth thinks in medieval times everyone went around imitating accents from places they'd never seen? Dunno. It's a real immersion breaker for me when I'm thinking 'wtf is that accent supposed to be?'.

Like I said, I don't understand why they don't let the voice actor's use their native accents nobody would bat an eyelid and instead would listen to what was being said instead of 'how' it was being said.

Yeah sometimes its hard to understand whats going on with the funny accents.

As far as I'm aware, Ralof was going on about the Empire lost their damn list and the warship of Talos (whatever that is, must have been a popular boat or something) has been banned.

Maybe the guy was one of the Black Irish?

Anyway, nobody has more right to complain about this than southerners. For decades we've been watching Yankees play southerners in various movies and television shows, and every durn one of 'em acts like they're channeling the spirit of either Foghorn Leghorn or Roscoe P. Coltrane when they do their "southern" voice.

Hah! Yes. And for the record, I grew up and live in the south, and I've never heard anyone say 'reckon'. EVER.

They probably think that most people aren't that picky about accents. (Kind of like most people don't bat an eye at Sean Connery's "Russian" accent in Hunt for Red October.)

...not sure why they didn't even try for any accents on the kids, though. The thick-accented Jarl having a kid running around with a bratty American accent is a bit silly.

RE: Farengar. I cant find any good vids on youtube, at least I wont sit through the 10 minute long ones, but to me he sounds like the Russian judge in the Boggle tournament in that one episode of King of the HIll.

Well, I have, and my grandfathers both used to say "yonder" every now and then. I do say "y'all" pretty often, and actually write it in posts on the internet. My complaint is less about the word choice and more about their accents. Also, too many southern people in movies and TV shows are from the country. I think all Yankees think everybody in the south lives in the country and was fishing and hunting from the age of three, and bathed in a creek and crapped in an outhouse.

As far as the accents in the game go, they're broadly all right for me - I don't mind the pseudo-Swedish and the pseudo-Aussie Dunmer - but it does get a bit inconsistent.

I want to know who the voice-actors for my Brother and half my classmates (College) in real life are... compared to the characters in Skyrim, they're absolutely terrible, and can't deliver their lines right more than half the time. On that note, I need a new voice-actor as well - I can't string even more than three words together without bungling the line, and my diction is terrible.

The first town you get to ... Riverwood, possibly. The lady that runs the sawmill might be who you're talking about. I don't remember a bad accent from her, but the blacksmith's wife is the first one to say, "I hope you die with a swore-d in your hands." Which sounds Norwegian to me. I can't think of any Irish voice impersonating Spain.

And yes, Farangar is now beyond annoying, since I have to use the Enchanting table in his room and hear him constantly: " ... I had you figured for a mage. Did you come to discuss the ongoing hostilities--" Shut up!

Just. Because. He sounds. Like. He's reading. His lines off. Of a cue card.

I think you might be thinking of Gerdur. She kinda sounds like Juhani from Knights of the Old Republic.

You said it. I was thinking of getting some decent voice recording equipment just so I could make a southern mod with PROPER accents. There sure are enough of them around here.

While this comes up with a fair point, there really are times when the voice acting is terrible, for the simple reason that the voice actor doesn't actually sound like they would if they were doing the scene on a stage. It sounds like they have missed the point of the line. I'm sorry, I'm practically speaking out of my ass because I can't think of any NPCs off hand who do this, but there have been a number of times when I've thought "hmm... that line was really badly delivered"

I'd appreciate it if you linked a youtube video with these elves speaking.

For a number of reasons. firstly I'm a new zealander myself and have not heard an NZ accent in the game yet. Secondly because I haven't heard an aussie accent in the game and thirdly because I'd like to hear it, identify it, and then inform you that they are not the same and that they are quite distinct from one another.

Edit: I looked up, and found the pseudo-aussie dunmer comment. So I went and had a listen to dunmers in windhelm.

That is most definitely not a kiwi accent! I'm not even sure it's aussie, I'm fairly sure it's english. I'm not exactly sure which part of england it comes from, and if an aussie was to come online and say that it was australian I wouldn't be surprised. But if you asked me what that accent my first guess would be english.

It's funny when Americans complain about bad American accents but don't realize the Dunmer are supposed to sound English rather than Australian. :P Not that it matters, because those accents are awful too.

If you want to hear some abominable American accents watch any Doctor Who episode from the 60s featuring American characters. They're always played by Englishmen doing some awful overacting. Classic stuff.

I'm off to find the horrible accent in Riverwood and see what it sounds like to me.

Is it the first town or first city you come across?
Because I think if you mean in Whiterun it is the younger woman of the Battle-Born Clan. Kind of neutral, with the whiny wimp of a kid as a son. Last I recall, her voice is annoying, but I may be mistaken.
