Is it just me, or does DT make the Serivce Rifle basically u

The Service Rifle's rate of fire is a complete joke, as well as its damage. For such an awful gun, I'm surprised it is such a staple weapon of the NCR. Most enemies that actually pose a thread have a DT well above 10 or 15. Even with the Guns skill maxed out, the service rifle took way too long to kill a standard enemy. the low damage for say, a 9mm pistol is acceptable, as it has a high rate of fire. This isn't the case for the Service Rifle, though.

Does anybody actually use the Service Rifle?

I tried it once, then sold it.

Horrid thing...I thought, "Goody! An M16!"...boy, was I wrong....

I only used it in the beginning until i found better weapons. I found myself using the cowboy repeater more often then the service rifle back when i didn't have many weapons to choose from.

I tried to use it, but it became useless as soon as I found myself a Cowboy Repeater and all the .357 magnum rounds I could fit in my endless pockets.

The look of it really deceived me too. When I first got it, I was like "Alright! My first automatic assault rifle! Kickass!!!", then I went out to fire it and was like "WTF? It isn't automatic? And it does really low damage compared to my Cowboy Repeater which actually fires faster than this. Welp, I'm selling this."

If it was full auto, I might have kept the damn thing.

Yeah i feel the same. Its kinda lame how its just a m16 wit a brown stock. You think that they would have used a different skin for it. Maybe the American assault rifle from FO3 it think it was a G3 not sure.

Yeah it's supposed to be the "grunt" weapon for NCR fodder. I think it svcks as much as it does partly so they're not impossible if you want to go anti-NCR relatively early.

I mean if low level NCR generic troops all had assault carbines, marksman carbines, and light machine guns then it would be a slaughter if you pissed them off at a low level yourself.

But yeah if you want a more assault rifle-like gun grab an assault carbine or find "The All-American"

They should've made it burst fire. That way it might actually be a viable weapon option.

There is a full auto mod for this rifle. Gives it approx a 540 rpm fire rate. The gun is also useful if the "realistic headshots" mod is used..

I put it in my weapons locker as a memento of my work for the NCR, it may not be much use but I couldn't bring myself to sell it, it felt like such a big deal when I was given it.

Huh. I got mine really early (not sure where). And since my varmint rifle wasn't modded (the Goodsprings shop somehow bugged and lost the scope/silencer), it became my default long-range/rifle weapon. Found it looooong before I ever got my hands on a Cowboy Repeater, so I used it alot. Heck, I'm still carrying the thing for long shots at weak stuff. Not going to waste my Trail Carbine's .44 ammo on low armor dudes....

(But, then, I carry a variety of guns. Right now I've got 9 and 10mm pistols, 10mm smg, service rifle, trail carbine, and thump-thump. I should probably stash the grenade launcher, I never manage to find a spot to use it. :( )

Edit: also, the service rifle looks alot more "professional soldier" running around in my 1st Recon Beret, sunglasses, and Reinforced leather armor. :)

Nope, I just use the varmint rifle, (with upgrades it has lasted me the entire game on previous playthroughs) now I use ratslayer, and the gobi. No need for this rifle.

The Service Rifle is not at all useless if you have a very low strength (1-3) and your Guns is 25-49.

Cowboy Repeater requires Strength 4. The carbines and automatic rifles all require (if you want to be effective with them) Guns skill of 75 or 100 and Strength around 5-6 (I think).

I used it all the time, with some AP ammo DT is no longer a problem. I find the sights much easier to deal with over the C.R and never used the trail carbine.

When I finally found the Ratslayer I started using it.

i normally carry it and a .357+HD cylinder and long barrel, or a 9MM with scope and mags.

Can some one spoiler tag me the location of the Gobi? Never seen it. The All American is pretty nice though.

I found the Service Rifle actually pretty useful. The only problem I had with it was an issue with my own skill, not its design, but I really svck at aiming with aperture sights.

It's weird how I've found two people in one thread that wear exactly the same as me. 0_0

Three. And I've seen pleeeenty of screenshots with this outfit too. :)

And it's game balance. You'd be raging about how lowly NCR troopers were [censored] you if it was 'good'. It is good in the early stages or if you have low strength anyway. It also fits with the universe somewhat - A cheap and easy weapon to make with the light industrial base the NCR probably has and easy to use in the hands of a basic trained grunt. If you notice almost every senior soldier uses 'good' guns. :D

It's pretty. And looks are an important reason when i choose my equipment, you won't catch me using a metal armor or 9mm SMG for example :D

You make a good point. But once I fix all their supply problems I expect to see NCR Troopers running around with mini-guns and missile launchers. ;)

Personally, I prefer the Varmint Rifle over the Service Rifle because of the iron sights (and the scope and silencer). Both are serviceable weapons, but the VR is better once you have the scope and a bit of AP ammo.

If the SR was capable of 3-round burst fire, it would be a lot more viable. Otherwise they should have outfitted the grunts with something more WW I - ish like a regular rifle or a garand style semi-automatic.

A pistol that can fire 5.56 AP ammo with a decent crit chance. Good weapon that I got a lot of use out of.
