Just how hard did you find hardcoe mode?

Post » Tue May 31, 2011 7:43 pm

Fairly easy overall, just remember "Prickly pear fruit". The real challenge of it for me was trying cram in everything I would need on a long adventure into the Mojave inside 50 Wg. With the pack-rat perk I was able to trim that down to under 40Wg and still be able to kill anything in the game with ease.

hardcoe mode is the only way to play the game far as I'm concerned.

hardcoe is slightly more difficult, but only becuase stimpacks don't heal instantly and you can't use them to heal limbs. Otherwise hardcoe just adds some much-appreciated depth to the game. I always play in hardcoe mode now. Non hardcoe mode feels flat; food and water have no meaning whatsoever and the "survival" skill is meaningless with hardcoe turned off (except for a perk or two that some might want). I agree with others that it could have been tuned better so that sleep and food management are more meaningful; still I consider it a success in that it enhances gamplay. Not for everyone, as some people will find it annoying. I'll say this, hardcoe mode will make you reasses some of your perks. For example "Packrat" is hugely useful in hardcoe, arguably more useful than Stong Back although having both is awesome.

When I selected hardcoe mode, I wasn't really trying to make the game harder, just more realistic. It does that and it makes me happy. That's why I've never played Fallout New Vegas without hardcoe mode activated.

I thought it was a joke and the only facepalm worthy thing in fonv  it doesn't warrant the name for such a tedious annoying mode which adds the most minimal amount of difficulty when it's called hardcoe MODE fair enough if it was called survival mode but when it's called hardcoe mode i expect to be skinned alive at every opportunity and pulling my hair out faster than fisto's fist out my back passage .

I didn't really find it hard. Found that it added more realism then it did make it harder. I liked having to eat/drink regularly. Although the sleeping thing could have been better.

I started the game on hardcoe mode when I first got it. I found it more annoying then hard. I have 2 hardcoe mode characters, one with high survival with a more realistic feel ( like limited guns and etc) and one without. I also have 2 non-hardcoe mode guys just to have fun with and take everything I find. One of the things I like about hardcoe is that with HH, campfires seem more fun(cooking your late night meal then sleeping). Although I think a new dlc should make it so sometimes a random npc will come sit with you at the fire and sleep there and have some random dialog options.

the hard thing is stimpacks regenerate over time so if a powerful enemy is coming for u u're preety much done for unless u have a good escape and heal tactic ,

i also hoard alot of food and water to a location that's gonna be a wasteland restaurant , any time i need something i go there

If you have enough room you can always drop a couple land mines as you run away.... easy way to cripple enemy legs and do a bit of damage to boot!

I found hardcoe mode to be a welcome addition. I figured it was more for depth than difficulty although some difficulty was certainly added when I turned it on for my poorly specd character. I have to say, and I hope someone at Bethesda/Obsidian hears me. I was very disappointed when after finishing hardcoe me the "secret" achievement was a mere 100 points added to my gamer score. Really? No nifty unlocks? No special outfit? Not even an interesting easter egg? It was my second play through and I seriously felt gypped.

I hope in the next Fallout those of us who have the hardcoe achievement get some cool [censored] in return for being devoted to this wonderful game and it's many stories.

Peace
Nick

I didn't find it too difficult but unfortunately, I found it a bit tedious for my style of play. The first time I tried it, ED-E died at level 5 and I stopped hardcoe. I tried it again using an Essential Companions mod but when I found 13 missiles and couldn't carry them, I stopped hardcoe again at Level 14. It just wasn't for me. :)

those are the reasons i never even tried it

If you give your companions a some super stimpaks they stop dieing in hardcoe mode. You won't be needing those things as you should be ramping up the survival skill to make 'Desert Salad' that heals more HP than a super stimpak. Bum rushing a Cazador nest or Quarry Junction will still have a high chance of ending badly for the follower, but that's the player's fault.

The real turn-off for 'hardcoe mode' is not being able to carry 20 weapons, 5 different outfits, 100,000+ rounds of ammo and still have plenty of room for loot. This right here is what will dissuade many from sticking with it.

hardcoe is so easy it should be default, in fact hardcoe hard should be the entry point difficulty.

I'm liking it, but I wouldn't say it's made it more difficult. I've had to adapt the way I play, which I've enjoyed - investing in survival (for food) and barter (for the pack rat perk), which I've never done before. I've also thought more about where I'm going to take companions, and I'm finding that Boone isn't my favourite companion in this playthrough, seeing as he's fairly svcky at holding his own when you're in enclosed spaces with enemies at a close range. Normally it didn't matter at all, but now I make sure I've got Veronica if I'm going inside a cave or something.
The weight has been fun to manage too - I haven't got the pack rat perk yet, but I'm always collecting junk for crafting so I have to decide what to take. Plus, normally I'd carry a crapload of guns and enough ammo for an army, so deciding which 3 guns I'll take has been interesting, and I'm making much more use of the reloading bench than I did before. I barely touched it when I was playing without hardcoe mode.
I'm finding that instead of making it harder, I'm forced to think more about what I'm doing and make more use of the resources that are in the game, which in turn makes me appreciate them more.
I wish I'd started off investing in survival though - I'm way behind on that one and really wish I wasn't now! :)

This was the problem I ran into on my first character, I didn't realize how important it was to run up one's Survival skill to a decent level early on in order to have access to better items. I ended up putting it off until fairly late, which was a big mistake as I was unable to utilize the true abilities of crafted foodstuffs when I really needed them. It also meant I went through way too much Purified Water, although now that I know where all the water sources are that's not really an issue anymore.

Well it makes the DLC Dead Money hard as hell. The poisonous cloud... the ghost people you are told to sneak past but still spot you a mile away even with 100 sneak... the bloody traps on the ground that keep crippling my legs. I will never do that DLC in hardcoe mode again... hell I may never do that DLC again anyway.

Other then that all it does is make you be a bit more careful with your companions, learn where all the bathrooms are, and gives you an excuse to kill all the brahmen you see... other then free xp that is.

STALKER had some "hardcoe" features to it. After playing through the game the first time on hardest difficulty (can't remember if there was even a setting for that) it seemed really easy the next time. I became so conditioned to using cover, controlled bursts, and aiming at various ranges due to actual bullet physics being in the game.that it was not an issue (still fun though). hardcoe in New Vegas is more about making the game seem a bit realistic and your first time through it will likely be more effective than after you learn the ins and outs of the world layout. If items were randomly placed in containers instead of being hand placed hardcoe would have been a lot more challenging.

I tried that once... The random encounters don't respawn fast enough for me. Just made it so I never 'looked back'.

hardcoe should have had no fast travel
And there should have been way less food/drink/stimpaks just sitting around

I think it just adds that realism to it, if you want it to be realistic in a way then hardcoe is for you. I personally havnt tried hardcoe, not because I cant do it but simply because of the comments I have read on here. Is it worth really playing it on hardcoe just so i have to add a bottle of water? I can just about cope with the glitches in the game so using hardcoe may not be an option for me

I like to carry a butt-load of ammunition with me because frankly I kill a lot of stuff. I like to carry around a gatling laser with 7,000 rounds, so I can't play hardcoe mode.

hardcoe mode is more annoying than adding depth. Since the New Vegas "Wasteland" isn't really a wasteland, it's very settled and not nearly as dangerous or isolating as the capital wasteland.
If hardcoe mode was applied to Fallout 3, it would add depth and make it much harder.

If your the type of player that likes to carry a gatling laser, minigun, missile launcher, grenade machine gun, fat man or any weapon that requires heavy ammunition/a lot of ammunition, hardcoe mode is more annoying than any other experience.

I always play on very hard (I like bullet-sponges). Sometimes I wish there was another difficulty called super-hard.

its not hard at all, if anything its kind of irritating having to eat or drink once in a while, and while you cant carry thousands and thousands of rounds of ammo (especially .50bmg which is 1/4 a lb each round) I can still carry almost 400 rounds of 45-70 and 500 of .45 super acp, along with about 300 .308 or 12.7mm you get the point, its not an issue. everything needs to be about 10x heavier and you should be limited to 2 handguns, 1 long gun, 1 smg and a knife or ditch a pistol to carry a 2h weapon. imo anyway
