Just how hard did you find hardcoe mode?

Post » Tue May 31, 2011 5:39 pm

Never tried it so I was curious.

Please don't vote if you played through it with the console command "tgm" in. God mode doesn't count.

I found it disappointingly easy. You almost never had to sleep. Carrying around some purified water, maize and hydra I almost forgot I was playing hardcoe at times. I never felt like I had to survive.

Didn′t find it hard, just annoying... The few changes missed depth and was just getting in the way when you were exploring

I didn't find it too difficult but unfortunately, I found it a bit tedious for my style of play. The first time I tried it, ED-E died at level 5 and I stopped hardcoe. I tried it again using an Essential Companions mod but when I found 13 missiles and couldn't carry them, I stopped hardcoe again at Level 14. It just wasn't for me. :)

It was too easy. Hunger is almost never a key management. And even if I get some sickness, it'll be easy to decrease it, as most foods in the game removes over 100 points, and that I always carry Steaks with me for a good replacement for Stimpaks. Sleep Deprivation is never a key management. I thought you get sleep-deprived every night. The only real one to manage is Dehydration. It goes up fairly quick, and so I carry +20 Dirty Waters and +10 Purified Waters to remove the doses. Another is ammo weight. This makes me put away any ammo that is heavy and non-usable to me, like Flamer Tanks or 40mm Grenades. Another is limb and HP healing. Since Stimpaks no longer heal limbs, this makes Hydra and Doctor's Bags more valuable. And if I don't have either, I get to visit a doctor. And lastly is companion no longer goes unconscious -- instead, they die. Instead of being harder, it makes things annoying, like for one they can't use Antivenom. So I have to administer several Stimpaks to keep one alive.

But still, it can be challenging. But sometimes, you don't notice you have hardcoe Mode on.

I tried playing the game once without hardcoe mode and I will never do it again. hardcoe Mode doesn't make the game "hardcoe" to play but it makes the game feel more real. Weight limits, can't heal crippled body parts with stimpaks and sleeping. Companions can die.

Its hunger/thirst/sleep inspirations from F3 worked better as there was less civilisation, less access to water, radiation was a bigger threat and so on. Since you can just walk to the nearest town and pick up a water and a snack, hardcoe needs really aren't a threat (it's mostly just an annoyance to deal with when you're fast-travelling back and forth across the map). Ammo weight and doctors bags though... they're really killers, especially for low strength/energy weapons characters who end up having to skimp on ammo and bags so you have room for loot. Staggering through a dungeon with both arms broken spraying wildly, or trying to conserve your last few ridiculously heavy Microfusion Cells, is a good challenge.

Basically... Its how the series always was [in this respect] before Fallout 3.

**With the exception of sleep and dehydration. Though it was possible to take dehydration damage on the world map, if you traveled without a canteen.

hardcoe mode isn't really meant to add any difficulty, although I can see why folks might think so based on the name.

Rather, it's supposed to add a 'survivalist' aspect to the game, which it does a decent job of. Unfortunately, supplies are far too common and the penalties too lenient for the ever-rising meters to matter until you're at about 600 or so. Most folks (myself included) keep knocking the meters back down when they exceed 200 anyway, so we don't have to worry about it later.

Many of us who use it go 'all-in', so to speak, and subsist entirely on stuff we make at campfires. This gives added incentive to wander off into the wilderness, as some of the ingredients are only found in remote locations, as well as a reason to go after creatures we'd normally leave alone, since their death items are used in the better recipes.

The "hardcoe" factor isn't really a direct combat limitation, but rather a realistic limit of what you're capable of. The real impact that hardcoe mode has on direct combat is stimpacks healing over time and companions being able to die. Next to that, you've got ammo weight limiting your weapon choice (no running around with a rocket launcher and 50 rockets; even carrying three is pushing it). Finally, hunger, thirst and sleep barely increase the difficulty at all. I'll admit that if you make a character that's got high survival, then try playing a character with low survival, then water needs will seem annoying as hell. Other than that though, it's pretty easy to take care of.

I haven't attempted it yet but I can safely assume that I wouldn't enjoy it. I appreciate it's existence, I really do, but I believe most of the mechanics would simply get in my way.

I have yet to spend any time playing without it.
I don't really notice it though. I played that way all the time in Fallout 3 (minus the having to drink something every 8 seconds..) so it wasn't really a switch for me.
I do have to be mindful of ammo. That can take up a lot of weight without me noticing it. I'll reach the weight limit and dump all my weapons and armor trying to relieve weight, and when it doesn't do anything, it'll take a second to settle in that the 100 Energy Cells that I'm not even using are taking up about 50+ lbs. of weight..

yea... when i first started the game i went hardcoe and me and ED-E got decimated by some nightkin... so i turned it off.

Well, I really hate when companions die because that means they are gone forever, so for that reason i don't play hardcoe.

The food and drink stuff was sort of a minor nuisance

Wait, followers don t die in non hardcoe mode? lol

Like Styles said it makes it a bit more real. No more 235 missles and 4567 5mm round and 2652 556 rounds. It cauases you to choose a little. Running low on ammo is possible.

I never played nv without it. Never would.........

followers barely ever die in nv anyway in hc mode . They just go unconscious like Sarah Lyons or something in normal mode?

I enjoy hardcoe mode, but yeah, I don't find it a more difficult game, instead it just adds more simulation detail to help with immersion.

It's biggest faults I've seen so far are that:

Needing sleep seems particularly rare, so the idea of needing rest on a regular basis doesn't get simulated well at all.

Food and water weights don't feel right. Constantly running around in a hot arid environment, covered in armor, I'd assume you'd need several gallons of water a day. While water starvation kicks in the most frequently, it doesn't seem key to a realistic level of intake. If you assume that a bottle of purified water is 8 ounces then you'd likely need to drink perhaps 20 of them a day to stay hydrated. Maybe that would be a bit too hardcoe for a lot of people, but I wouldn't mind.

The big problem with hardcoe mode in terms of really delivering a realistic feel is that it doesn't modify fast travel. I would have liked to have had some kind of limitation put on fast travel so that you can't just teleport to anywhere on the map, with only the mild effect of likely being a little hungry and thirst at your arrival. Having some fast travel is likely good, otherwise the game would just take forever to play, but I would have liked to have seen a more detailed sub-system of how it would work with hardcoe mode on.

When I selected hardcoe mode, I wasn't really trying to make the game harder, just more realistic. It does that and it makes me happy. That's why I've never played Fallout New Vegas without hardcoe mode activated.

I typically carry 1 main "spray and pray" or sniper weapon and some sort of lightweight backup while doing hardcoe mode. I could carry around plenty of ammo for my main gun, repair kits, doctor's bags, etc... after getting the Pack Rat perk, Strong Back, and maybe some +strength perks and augmentation. Since the heavy stuff is not available until higher levels it works out just fine for me. At one time I had like 1000 rounds for my AMR and several hundered for my backup 12.7mm SMG on my sniper character who only wore light or no armor and it worked, but this time I am trying a "tank" with heavy duty spray weapons... the ammo weighs a ton less than .50 and 12.7mm though so it is no big deal.

I found hardcoe mode to be a welcome addition. I figured it was more for depth than difficulty although some difficulty was certainly added when I turned it on for my poorly specd character. I have to say, and I hope someone at Bethesda/Obsidian hears me. I was very disappointed when after finishing hardcoe me the "secret" achievement was a mere 100 points added to my gamer score. Really? No nifty unlocks? No special outfit? Not even an interesting easter egg? It was my second play through and I seriously felt gypped.

I hope in the next Fallout those of us who have the hardcoe achievement get some cool [censored] in return for being devoted to this wonderful game and it's many stories.

Peace
Nick

I found it incredibly extremely difficult! But that's because I'm rubbish at games like Fallout. I'm excellent at racing games but dont enjoy them so much, and crap at games like Fallout but love them so. Go figure.
