i just realised skyrim is missing a big important thing...

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 10:50 pm

Its cinematics. The only cinematic is the one that is played at Helgen(i did not count mercer VS karliah as cinematic). Even after alduin got defeated, there isnt any cinematic but rather a bunch of dragons talking nonsense. Cinematics that should be played in various quests did not play because the developers did not think about it? I think skyrim needs more cinematics(and obviously more guard dialogs) since it is lacking a huge factor. thoughts?

I don't think cinematics are a necessary factor at all. The way it plays out as is (and was in Oblivion) makes it a bit smoother and adds the "DUDE YOU'RE LIKE RIGHT THERE" feeling to it.

The cutscenes in Morrowind were cool, but the bits in Oblivion where you weren't able to move were annoying as hell.

BGS does not rely on cinematics for its games. Not all games have to be made the same. Skyrim is about your story, it's meant to be lived out in first person experience, not splashed in front of you in flashy [boring] cutscenes.

QFT. I really REALLY dislike cinematic crap in a game. If I want a movie I'll watch a movie thanks. It does NOT add to the game in any way for me.

Some games, like the Baldur's Gate series and KotOR, have great cinematics. Some games, notably Gothic and KotOR 2, I had tons of problems with cinematics. They would frequently cause the game to freeze up or crash, and make it impossible to continue the game without going into the .ini file or options menu and completely disabling them.
Skyrim is a more intense and action-oriented game, and I really dont feel that cinematucs would be necessary.

Argh. Let me just say that I hate cinematics with a passion. I detest being forced to be a spectator. I play in first person and also detest the finishers that throw you into third person. There are some cool first person finisher animations, and I wish there was the option to choose first person animation only. There are also more cinematics in Skyrim than just the Helgen one. Honestly if I saw that Skyrim had marriage, followers and a lot of cinematics then I would never have bothered to play it. I would never want to see TES go in this (Bioware) direction.

You mean cutscenes like grand theft auto? I love gta but cutscenes in RPGs would restrict your freedom way to much

Cinematics RUIN games. Look at DXHR. Without the cinematics and boss battles that could have been my GOTY.

The only thing I disliked about that was the inability to fast forward through it since I've more than one character, and I'm not much into spending a dozen rides with Ralof over to Helgen.

Still, not a terrible thing. Just let it play and go get a drink or something.

I have a save at Helgen, during character creation, and I'm pretty sure the game made it for me. I can load it, and be right at the character creation screen.

Oh yeeeeah. I forgot if that was an Autosave or a regular save. I should...probably stop saving over that. @@

I totally agree with Serethil. It is really much better without cinematics. I play in first person. Why would one rather watch the character they are playing, instead of be the character?

I like it but maybe you have to lust after Ulfric and Ralof for this to be true.

I'm not anti cinematics per se. I don't think they fit TES games, though. I think it's neat how an NPC can be delivering his magnum opus speech about whatever and you can just stroll off if you want to. "Oh, I'm sorry Ulfric. Were you talking to me? I was busy stealing absolutely everything that isn't nailed down."

I heard that saving over the save is dangerous and you could lose your game save btw

The ending to Oblivion was pretty lackluster imo.

You know I would've like to have seen Ulfric challenging and then get to see the full fight with the high king in cinematic mode.. Remember thehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekb5l4Iozcw? That was badass. I don't know why anyone would have such problem with it.

What. A massive attack on the... you know... and the thing with... you know who. That was pretty epic.

I don't know what people expect, sheesh.

No, cinematics is one thing Skyrim is not missing.

That's what I think too. In a game like Skyrim, where everything about my character is defined by me and no one else, I'm thrown off balance when the camera suddenyl goes in third person. I am my character, my character is me, I control her, I can't watch her in third person, it just doesn't make sense. It's like watching myself in third person, which is obviously impossible.

However, there are games where cinematics feel right. These games are usually heavily scripted, or at least have a distinct plot as the central point of the game. Someone linked to The Witcher 2, which is a good example. KotOR was one too, as was Mass Effect, but in the latter (and generally in all recent Bioware games) cinematics look more like: corridor-cutscene-corridor-fight-cutscene-corridor-fight, which is possibly the worst thing that can happen to a video game.
At least Mass Effect was aiming to do just that and we knew it was going to be like this. But when my game turns into a movie, I turn it off.

I'd write a lengthy opinion, but you saved me some time :) It's indeed true, I truly like the distinctiveness between games in ways like this. I mean, the first time I saw the morrowind cutscene of your dream as a werewolf, I nearly fell out my chair :P

I was gonna say six....

But yea I don't think cinematics would be very good. I mean, they would have to add voice acting for the player character, right?

Cinematics - if well-realized - can add some depth to the story.

But of course they've to be optional and are totally inappropriate at the actual state in a Tes game in which YOU choose the main character.
