No it isn't.

Just find a place to dump your heavy stuff (ore) and then chop some wood for money. You'll have enough to buy the house in Whiterun in no time.

Only safe places are in houses that you own. So save up 5k gold, which shouldn't be hard, and buy Breezehome ASAP.

Though I am curious...what are you carrying that always has you at your max weight? Multiple armor sets/weapons? General hording?

Not true.
Alchemist shack and river shack have safe storage. River- cupboard I believe. Alchemist - end table.
Plus the witches house just south? Of Riverwood has safe storage everywhere but the barrel on the first floor. Also has an alchemy lab and enchanter in the basemant. It will say 'steal from chest' but the stuff you put in there is not tagged stolen. Can't think of the name but it shows up on your radar when you are near the standing stones

Huh, that's good to know. I still think I'll stick with houses though for the time being, I'd be too paranoid if something ended up getting lost in the vastness of time and space. Still, I suppose I'll drop off something specific and easy to remember in those places then wait out the reset time and see what happens. :D

I have Faendal as a follower and was told I could use his house in Riverwood to store my loot. Is this not true? I am saving to buy Honeyside because getting the Whiterun house involves unlocking dragons, which I am not ready to do with this character.

Not sur about faendal. If you go in there and stuff is still tagged steal it may not work. Check the wiki.
Btw. The riften house can be purchased for 5k also.
Do enough good deeds including the skooma fade thing and she will let you buy it.
Put any extra gold in a nearby chest or something and she will sell it for 5k

You don't even have to get the housecarl if you don't want. Buy the house and do not talk to the jarl again. The housecarl just tears the place up with her physics anyway.

Ummm.. Windhelm isn't hard to get to, and the quest is generally easy as well. The house is like a million times better though, for a price between 5K - 8K.

If he doesn't mind adventuring, then he should go there instead. :P

I thought you couldn't get that house until after you finished the Civil War questline, and Blood on the Ice.

I got the house without doing the Civil War.

Whilst saving up for Breezehome, why not take a follower along temporarily and keep all your unneeded heavy stuff with him.

The barrels in front of the blacksmith shop in Whiterun next to Breezehome are safe. I’ve had stuff sitting in one for 50 levels.

Well I did once too, but here was an un-killable murderer living in the house that I couldn't get rid of. I think the 1.4 patch might have fixed this though.

It's Anise's Cabin (the one S/SW of Riverwood). When you exit the starting dungeon and Raloff has you guys duck down as Alduin flies past, the cabin is directly north of that spot across the river and up a small bluff.

Kill Anise (she won't mind... really), and all of the storage in the basemant is safe to store your loot. Plus, the free Enchanting and Alchemy tables are always a very nice bonus like you said.

I never can stand the fact that everything her in cabin and basemant are set as STEAL items. I hate stealing anything due to that bug that makes those items forever marked stolen in your inventory. So all I can ever do is read the skill book, go to basemant and read her letter, go outside and kill her, then leave.

Yeah, but I'm running an Assassin so stealing really isn't below my morals. lol

And I mention it for the storage possibilities for OP. While the Chest/Barrels/etc. in the basemant say you are stealing, any loot that you store in them (loot that you have put into the containers, when taken out of the containers again, will never say "stolen" regardless of what the container contents list says) will be fine and thus suits the OP's needs perfectly. And it's a free house, if a bit drafty due to shoddy construction...

I've done the same thing, but not for 50 levels. I store my smithing gear and weapons/armor in those two barrels and my alchemy stuff in the barrel in front of Arcadia's shop until I can buy Breezehome. I've never had anything stolen from either locations.

This ^^ Plus you'll learn a few free spells.

I also dumped a bunch of Dwemer metal things and ingots on the ground at Warmaiden's in Whiterun - kind of behind the smelter and near the sidewalk. It's all still there 12 levels later. And for that matter I put some Stormcloak armor on the ground in the courtyard at the College and that is still there as well.

The storage barrels at War Maidens work OK provided you don't stay away from Whiterun longer than 30 in game days. Learned this the hard way! Favorite place for me for protected storage is the storehouse outside of Mzulft. Pick the lock and you've three seperate rooms with benches for dropping your loot. There are two wall mounted chests you can use as well for small items like jewellry. I use the benches for weaponry and drop clothing / armour in the furhter lower stairwell landing. Yes, you end up with piles of stuff, but its a warehouse after all, and can be fun to dig thru. (Where did I find this ?, oh yeah there's a good battle associated with this one etc...)

This....sort of.
This is my 3rd playthrough, I always liked the archmage quarters even after buying all the houses (and yes, FINALLY, on this latest playthrough I got Hjerim, woohoo!).
But. I started storing extra books in a barrel up there, to take to a house later for re-organizing. After a long time away I came back and the garden and everything had respawned, which I thought was great, but then I discovered that ONE barrel swallowed all my books!
It's not the barrel right next to the alchemy table, or in the grouping to the right of that barrel, it's the barrel in the next grouping after that (on the same side of the aisle), the one that sticks out the most. Damn!

All of my other stuff sorted and stored in various sacks and other barrels was fine, it was just that one barrel that gulped down everything.
So be careful.

Come to think of it, I've had like 62 Iron Daggers I made in a Smithing marathon still in that place. Now I can be cheap on new playthroughs, hooray!

Windhelm is a good choice if you side with the Stormcloaks. If you're with the Imperials, you can't get it until you finish the Civil War questline.
