Just Switched From PS3 to PC...Wow!

Ive got 250hours on a char and no lockups cept for the occasional freeze every couple days.

That's how it started with me though, then eventually by the 300 hour mark the game was becoming unplayable and was guaranteed to freeze at least once a day depending on how many times I played it.

Yes it does have both of those titles.
Ok, the have halo 1 and gears 1, thats it, not gears 3 or 2, not the new trilogy of gears coming out, and not halo 2, 3, reach, ODST, ad 4. Smart ass. There is a reason they abandoned the PC platform. If people want to make PC their main platform ,that's their choice, and more power to them I just cant do it. Started on the NES, will never switch from console.

I am thinking of buying a PC. Any suggestions on what I should buy? I already have a monitor. I only have $300-$600 to spend. What should I get? I've seen some nice ones at my Best Buy. But I'm not really a computer guy.

If you can handle a small screwdriver and follow instructions, you can build your own. I'm about to assemble one for my wife; I chose an AMD A6 chip (this is the newest one. It has a quad core CPU and DX-11 GPU on the same dye. So you don't need a video card). I got the A6, a Gigabyte A75M-D2H Micro-ATX mother board, and 8gigs of Mushkin Enhanced DDR3 ram for $210 as a bundle from Newegg. A 500 gig SATA 6.0 Hdd is around $80. Power supply around $100 (I got an 850 watt unit; never run near the limit on a supply, the heat it generates will shorten its life, and maybe the life of other components as well) That I found at Pricewatch. You can spend as little as $40 of as much as a couple grand on a case, depending on size and manufacturer. A bluray/dvd player drive is around $50 for one with a good rep; you can get cheaper, though.

I haven't had a chance to actually stress test this rig, but if the specs hold, you'd have a beast that could eat anything out there alive (with the possible exception of the extreme high end shooters.......and apparently the A6 will partner with a Radeon 6000 series graphic card for a crossfire configuration, if you need it).

Learn to build your own; you will get a lot more bang for your buck than anything you could buy pre-made.

Oh, and add the cost of Win 7 personal to that. Gotta have an OS, and that should do it. I'd go for the middle version, just to have access to more features.......

Hm, I'll have to see about that, elder scrolls and fallout tend to freeze on me every so often in general, just seems to be a bethesda thing, lol. I just save a lot and expect i to freeze if it hasnt in a few days.

Then lower your graphics settings. That is what is causing the lag. You are trying to run the game above what your computer can manage.

That's correct. In my opinion, however, to play the game on PC is to do so to get the maximum out of the visuals/graphics. If I had to reduce the settings to the same or lower than a console, why not just play on a console.

There are plenty of mods with no performance impact. And unlike a console, PC can be upgraded. Up to a certain point atleast, next time i upgarde mine i have to change everything but the case :hehe:

Access to mods, preferred system, only option, planning to upgrade ...

Sadly, its eventually going to come down to everyone playing on pc just for the mods... :(

Isnt that why everyones playing now?

I can guarantee you if PC had, for whatever reason, no mods... Skyrim would be non-existant on PC.

I made the switch from PS3 to PC during Fallout New Vegas. It had so many bugs and I really wanted to play. I'm so glad I did because it was because of a bugfix by a modder that made the game playable for me. The broken Boone bug never was fixed by Obsidian (no headtracking).

I had an experience recently where I couldn't play Skyrim on my PC so I fired up the PS3 version and I'm so bad with the controller; I used to love it. Using the keyboard and mouse on PC is so much more accurate...more hotkeys, more control, just so much better. I use a few mods but I don't go crazy. I'm also glad that Bethesda is pushing the console mfgrs to allow mods...it'll be great for everyone. :tes:

Stuck on the PS3 until I upgrade my computer. Got a processing powerhouse laptop. Unfortunately the GPU is Subpar. It's not to bad I just wish they would give console users the command console. At least then I could fix mmany of the smaller bugs that drive me ape[censored]e

TES on the ps3 was always unstable... ALWAYS. I remember those game breaking glitches on the ps3 that made me start a new game a lot of times.

The only console I ever owned was an Intellivision, oh end of 70's, beginning of 80's? I love mods and rearranging the game to suit my idea of what it should be, so unless consoles come up with mods I'll never own a console again.

Go to youtube and look up Newegg TV. He has a nice tutorial on building your own rig.

I had Oblivion for Xbox 360 and bought the PC version a couple years afterwards. Now I play PC for pretty much everything, it was such a huge upgrade. Mods can extend the life of the game greatly and keyboard and mouse is way more functional than controllers IMO.

I would love to try and Elder Scrolls game on the PC. Unfortunately, I doubt my laptop would be able to handle the requirements for Skyrim. :P

It's pretty great on Xbox though.

I switched from a PS3 to PC. Yes my PC is just good enough to run the game but the difference is noticeable.

I totally get that and agree with you there. If I wasn't upgrading my PC, however, I'd just stick with the console. Honestly, part of the fun of playing on PC is having the ability to tweak your system and the game settings to generate graphics that far exceed that of consoles. I have Oblivion for my laptop, but if it ran like it does on the Xbox, I'd get the Xbox copy. Because I spent hours making my laptop more efficient, downloading drivers everywhere, and tweaking the graphics, there's no way that the Xbox version can compare.

The only thing I'm still struggling with a bit is combat with the PC controls as turning and slashing can be a bit tough for me. I already put mouse sensitivity at the highest, disabled vsync and reduced the mouse acceleration from 1 to 0.

Is there anything else I can do or any mod that helps?

I think the PC is the best platform as it gives the most options and leeway, but I don't jade people for playing on a console, although I do often suffer from the the, assumption that people are on the PC when i give advice for fixing a problem >.< .At the same time there isn't much a console can do that a PC can't. If someone wants to trade visual sharpness for a bigger screen you can hook up the PC to the big screen, or of you prefer controllers they plug into the PC the same way they do in the 360. I keep a 360 to play some exclusive titles like most of the Halo series, but thats really it.

I recently picked up Skyrim for my laptop, not expecting it to run or look that great (my laptop doesn't have the greatest GPU). I was really surprised! I have the graphical setting set to "Medium" and I think it looks way better than the XBOX. Not to mention the load times are lightning fast!

Having said that though, I still find myself playing more on the XBOX. It's just more convenient for me to play on the console. And I must admit, I really like the Kinect functionality. :ermm:
