Lack of choice concerning Yes Man

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 12:40 pm

I cant be the only one who got rid of house to use the securitrons to not only help the NCR win the fight but also to help keep them in the wasteland. I was really dissapointed to see that when I talked to the general all my chat options forced me to either be a dike, kill the general or be a dike.

If you wanted to help the NCR you should have taken the NCR quest path. The Wild Card path assumes that you're taking over Vegas for yourself.

Why would you help the NCR but not actually do quests for the NCR?

I was disappointed that there was no option to be cool with the NCR either. The general comes up and acts friendly, then you gotta be an ass to him. There should've been an option to rule but still be friendly to the NCR considering it lets you save their president and such under the pretense that you can continue friendly relations with them.

I understand where the OP is coming from. I mean, in Mr. House's path (which from the NCR's point of view shouldn't be that different than the Wild Card path, since you take the dam away from them in either case), you do get the chance to end that conversation on good terms with the general (by passing barter checks). Would've been nice to have a similar option in the Wild Card path. This was one of the few blemishes in what was otherwise the most satisfying ending of the game for me.

There is a speech check at the end with wildcard, you just need 100 speech.

And in the end it says that NCR citizens still frequent Vegas so you're still on good terms with the NCR they just don't "own" you.

completely agree with the opening post. i got to the end with yes man and met the general, being forced into killing him was a bit unsatisfying.

i went with yes man because i wanted to be independent and have new vegas to myself, i dont see why being independent necessarily meant i had to make an enemy of the NCR/Legion.

I can see where siding with Yes Man would make you and enemy of Caesar, but at worst it should only drop you to neutral (or even accepted... depending on how many quests you did) with the NCR.

You do not need to kill him.

You don't need to kill him, but even the speech check to avoid the fight, which I passed (and as I recall there was only one - certainly I couldn't find any more pleasant options despite looking) - is basically you trying to intimidate and frighten the general into leaving, which isn't a particularly cordial note to end that conversation on.

It's lame, you don't get to see the clone wars (c'mon, some of you had to think that whole building with all those robots reminded you of a certain movie). . I wanted to see all those things come out and start kicking ass! Didn't happen. My next playthrough is going to be the wildcard.

I bet the NCR would try to take New Vegas away from you eventually. If it isn't theirs they are not happy. :D

If you want Vegas to yourself, why would you not expect the NCR to not be negative to you? For the NCR to truly gain paower in that region, Hoover Dam AND New Vegas is needed. You taking NV just replaces House with you and the NCR is still stuck as fighters vs, The Legion and others for no benefit other than the power the dam provides. The true power of the area - money, etc. - is NV. Do wild card if that's want you want to be - a wild card. Not if you want to completely ally with a force to help you maintain your power. IMO, I find the committment the NCR makes to the NV area in the game is interesting, seeing as how House is really in control of the "game".

People seem to be mistaking what my original intentions were for some reason because I took the wild card route.

I had started the game ready to help the NCR and did so along the entire way gaining good reputation with them and completing every NCR mission possible. However as an RPG GAME I saw the possibility of getting rid of house and using yes mans help so I could activate the securitron army for my own purposes and not house's. With that in mind I was hoping I could bypass the whole "new vegas for new vegas" thing and get the securitrons to help the NCR secure the colorado. Instead Im forced into greeting the general with intimidation using the NICEST speech options, even the speech check came off completely [censored] filled.

I ended up making it all the way to the point right before you actually move with the NCR to attack the legion where the roads going out havent been blocked yet. So the trample the bear, for the republic part 2 both failed when I went to finish wild card with yes man to get the securitron army ready. Basically when I saw I could give the NCR the biggest advantage possible in the history of Fallout I took advantage of the opportunity and wanted to see if I could use the robot army to help them instead.

Also off topic, alien blaster to legate face = great win

Definitely agree that this was the weakest part (well maybe other than the lousy battle) of an otherwise decent ending. Having only 1 way of conversing with him (and the speech check is definitely in line with all the other dialogue) is unfortunate.

I felt the lack from a different perspective than the OP: I wanted to bargain with the NCR at the end, sign a treaty. This would seem to be the most logical method of dealing with things, considering you are basically replacing Mr. House, and bargaining/treaties is the way they conducted business with him. Assuming war is shortsighted on the part of the writers.

I did the Wild Card ending thinking I had complete control - therefore I wanted to own the Lucky 38, take revenues from the other casinos but still maintain good relationships with the NCR, allowing them the bases, Hoover Dam etc. Also I would have helped fund their defense somewhat and said all of these other lands are yours. At the end of the day it's not hard to add in a comprise solution which the final screens could say - " A compromise was stuck, afterall how could the NCR take New Vegas without destoying it."

Still in my head that's what really happened.

Now I am doing the NCR run through

Bethesda didn't make this game, Obsidian did. Anyway, both the gamesas and Obsidian devs are around, they just don't often post in unofficial threads here.

So you went the Wild Card route and then decided you wanted to switch to NCR at the last second.

You can't have everything you want and nothing ever ends the way you expect (or want) it to.

One consequence of going with Yes Man is that once you commit to an Independent Vegas, there is no weasely backpedaling allowed.

The NCR wasn't there to just let somebody else come in and take the Dam (which you did). They weren't there to negotiate with someone who just came in and pulled the rug out from under their feet.

Frankly, if you wanted to help NCR, you should have just done the NCR track and left Yes Man out of it.

This was my thinking also.

I was hoping to get the chance to work alongside the NCR rather than being their gopher-lap dog. I would have expected a "if you're not with us, you're against us" from Caesar and House, but not from NCR.

Weasely backpedaling? Thats funny. If you knew how to READ you would see I had taken the NCR path and was planning on following it to the end. However I saw the opportunity to take the securitron army away from house for my own means to help the NCR. I just happened to be doing Yes Man missions in the strip to see what I could get accomplished there while going down the NCR path. It came up with the Dont Tread on the Bear mission but I believed Id still be able to use the robots to help the NCR since it was never my intent to take the strip for myself. I just wanted the securitrons, screw house and screw yes man. It was before you talk to the ranger about security for the presidents visit that I left hoover dam and walked to boulder city so I could fast travel again. There I activated the army and sought to use it to help the NCR. I was glad to see they destroyed an already previously massacred fortification hill but dissapointed to see all my speech options made me look like a [censored].

Once more though in case you decide not to read the first paragraph in this post. I didnt want the strip, I didnt want the dam, I only did the wild card missions because it was apparently the only way to activate the robot army after I got rid of house. On top of that I did practically ever NCR mission in the game save for saving president kimball and the final battle so I wouldnt get myself stuck inside of the dam.

I did the same except for the legion. I had planned to tell Cesear about my new army, be made Legate Securitronius and together drive the NCR from all memory. Instead the legion turned hostile on me once yes man gave me control because bad writing.

I kind of agree with the OP. Yes Man is supposed to take orders from you. He even tells you himself that he isn't programmed to have an agenda at all. When you first meet him, it isn't made clear that his path is mutually exclusive to any of the others.

I think it would have been much more interesting if you could use his path to help with the other paths, as well as the one that he currently offers.

Exactly this, he SHOULDNT be programmed to have an agenda, the fact that his mission path seems to force you into an ending is a clear indication that you have no choice over what happens in the end, only over what army gets completely slaughtered.
