Lack of "greaves".

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 4:47 am

First off I don't want this to become a rage thread about greaves being merged with the curiass, but I was wondering has anyone noticed the number of armor types that lack "greaves" or rather how many armors only consist of a curiass and no leg coverings or a curiass and a skirt, on both male and female characters? Seems like a poor armor design choice aesthetically considering how cold Skyrim is. I can't bring my bosmer to wear those armors lol. The pantlessness ruins the look ro me.

Well for a Nord and Khajiit the clothes should be fine. But for other Races, maybe a bit to cold. The Imperial Armors are all without greaves, Studded and Leather too. Also some of the armors have no armparts. But overall the armors are looking pretty good.

Nords which the armors are based for don't require total clothing because our bodies are naturally resistant to cold. I'm sorry your girly-man, milk-drinker legs need more covering.

Yet the same armour is worn by bosmer and redguards and ARGONIANS in the middle of blizzards?

I can't help it, bosmer legs are pretty scrawny, my character's legs are almost womanly in appearance (He has a creepy lack of leg hair.). They do come from a warm climate after all. And milk is good...lots of vitamins lol.

That's the number one cause of the knee trauma in Skyrim province.

Lacking greaves feels easier on the eyes.

Suddenly it all makes sense lol. I keep worrying I'll get frostbite if I wear them, and to top it off some armors just don't look good with my bare legs hanging out of them.

Well, I play a Nord so it never really bothered me. I prefer that type of armor since it makes sense. I mean it does make sense though... It be like going to another country and say you need new pants. You probably only find things in the style of that country. In terms of player clothing, you start off as prisoner and at that point you are forced to get everything you find in Nordic lands.

Having no greaves gives you more mobility which is the whole reason that you choose light armor. and what the others said about nords being resistant to cold

I approve of this post. Except nords, well northern europeans, are actually the historical milk drinkers of the world and part of the reason they have manly-man legs and lack of lactose intolerance

Some armors do. Like Steel has two options. One with and one without.

Edit: now that I think of it... I'm pretty sure that's the only heavy armor with said option.

I don't think you should invoke the weather since you're playing/RP'ing a fantasy video game.

I've looked at that, and it's obvious that the people that live in Skyrim are different in that they don't care if the sun shines, or if there's a raging blizzard outside. I mean, if you're going that far, shouldn't they wear sunglasses during a bright sunny day? Sun tan lotion?

I've walk the wilderness with Lydia, and swam in ice cold water in metal armor (with a below freezing wind chill); and met many different people, and nobody ever complained.

So, if you're RP'ing - assume they're hardy people, whose body temperature goes up and down depending on the outside temps, and keeps them adjusted appropriately.

I guess you're right about everything not being realistic being "normal" for us ( the swimming with steel armor being a perfect example) Maybe it just stands out as strange to me, as for rping I generally use the hardy people reasoning. Also I just thought of something I havent seen talked about since the game released, has anyone noticed dynamic snow yet? I haven't paid close enough attention to see if it's ingame.

If all else fails wear elven armor. It's better than the idiotic armor that the inferior barbarians wear.

It's there to show that you are there to guide them through this period of instability and educate them as to their place in the world.

Ancient Nord Armor
Fur Armor ((all 4 skins))
Hide Armor
Studded Armor
Spike Armor
Iron Armor
Steel armor ((with that unsual fur skirt))
Wolf Armor ((sold -only- by Eorluf Grey Mane))
Dwarven Armor
Imperial Armor ((looks more like a dress honestly))
Stormcloak armor

Those are just some off the top of my head. You can't call them "kilts" because Nords are "Vikings" not "scottish" So the only thing you can call these armor are bulky dresses and mini skirts. Even the STEEL armor must have a traditional fur skirt!

Glass armor too, these are the top three that don't have some kind of skirt on their armor.

Dragonscale and dragon plate look like they have a tiny mini skirt going on there
