Lack of recognition for the defeat of Alduin.

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 6:20 am

So, I'm walking around skyrim and talking to people, they seem to have forgotten that I saved their asses. Does the word spread over time or something? Or is it just a fallible oversight on the game's behalf?
Talking to the Theive's guild, the people in whiterun, Windhelm, anywhere! I was expecting a grand reception of sorts, let alone a pat on the back... but nothing!
I remember that in Morrowind and Oblivion, when you defeated the archnemesis, you were proclaimed as a hero of all the land... so will the devs fix the sheer amount of apathy in the Skyrim land in some sort of future fix or DLC?

You're the dragonborn, do you need any more recognition?

Yes. When I walk into an inn, the drunks begging for drinks should be buying ME mead.

Yet no one is acknowledging that, thus acting as if nothing ever happened. You'd think that the word would spread to the other parts of skyrim when you defeated alduin but everyone treats you the same way as if you just got off the wagon in the beginning of the game.

Yes.

Thats like saying that you're a chef, do you need any more recognition? I mean, all you did was become the most amazing chef in the world. I've already said you're a chef, what more do you want?

Dont forget that in tamriel there is no televised coverage of the dragonborn or magazine interviews with pictures of them.
If you had never seen a picture of barrack obama you would not know who he was if he walked past you. I like that not everybody is praising me continuously, its bad enough been asked to conjure up a warm bed or been told to keep my hands to myself every time I play.

It shouldn't happen immediatly but over time the word would spread and a statue would be erected in your honor, so people from all around can pay their respects and learn the truth of what happened with Alduin and the identity of the dragonborn. I mean the dovahkiin is the chosen one, the messiah, the Jesus/Mohammed/Moses of Skyrim. He at least deserves some respect, and also some extreme benefits from the populace... but I for one would ignore any over-the-top admiration.

Hmm, I always thought heroes did what they did because that is what they do, not because they expect a pat on the back.

Could be worse. After all, nobody expect some dead people watched you killing Alduin off. But still, people should already react if you start killing dragons. Missed opportunity here.

I think "the bad guy dies" is not exactly a spoiler.

I never broadcast the fact that I'm the Dragonborn anyway, and I don't think many people know the specifics of your fight with the World Eater. Most of them just know that the dragons have returned, and they remain even after you defeat Alduin, so they probably don't realize anything's different.

It's kind of a given that Alduin is the Boss of the game. Since we have not discussed what he is, where he is, how you meet him, what you do with him, just that he is defeated, then it is OK to stay in General Discussion.

Thats true about heros but the public at large treats the hero different then before, even in real life.

I get random guards saying something about my victory and saving their very souls...about as close as recognition for the sovngaard fight as I have ever got.

My guy isn't a hero, my guy is a full blodded nord who thrives on the old nordic tradition of renown and praise, . the rumor of the Dragon born is rampant, people find out helgen and kynsgrove get a visit from a Dragon but no one knows who I am? Thalmor, bounty hunters, HELL EVEN random shopkeepers send hit squads out for me who can point me out in a crowd, but for saving the world?

I WORK FOR BELETHOR,

But not to be thanked for it?
By that logic Superman shouldn't at all be revered by the populace for saving the world countless amounts of times, and should be dismissed as a machine that's doing it's function. To me, that populace would come across as being extremely selfish and apathetic. Why bother saving these people if they don't appreciate what you have done?

Or because the game forces you to be the hero in the MQ. I want to side with Alduin!

Because dragons are still around. Most people don't know it's Alduin that has returned, so the defeat of this one dragon (in a battle they don't even see) means very little to them.

The Gourmet is in Skyrim, everyone flips their [censored] and gets excited.
The High King is murdered, everyone flips their [censored] and freaks out.

The Dragonborn walks through town, everyone thinks "who the hell is that?"
The Emperor is assassinated, nobody gives a damn.

It would appear that a delicious dinner is more important to the people of Skyrim than not becoming a delicious dinner for a dragon.

You quoted me, didn't you read what you quoted?

When did I ever talk about how other people should feel about Superman or Heroes for that matter? Since you brought him up, Clark Kent does not dive into a phone booth thinking "Wow, the people are going to love me when I do this good deed"

What I am talking about is the OP is craving recognition for saving the world, I am saying that heroes don't do what they do for recognition. I have never said anything about what others should think or feel about a hero.

If there was an endgame to spoil. You finish the last 'epic' quest, save the world, then you go back to being a rube that gets spit on by beggars and insulted by rookie town guards, with absolutely zero recognition from anyone in the entire world. Yippee.

Yet even then, with the sheer amount of dragons that you have slained alone, you don't garner any reputation for it... Everything remains as it was before dragons started appearing on a massive scale. People should be buying you drinks, townsfolk letting you in their houses as an honored guest, shopkeepers giving you a discount, children circling around you as if you were santa claus.. etc.
