Lack of threatening gun-weilding enemies

Would not like this tbh, as the factions you meet have there equipment based on the story, suddenly finding a powder ganger with an AM weeks at most after I've killed his spawn father would be silly to me.

The Assassins already feel cheap to me as a way to limit role, so you follow the game to Vegas as intended.
Not to mention the NCR can't even send 3 guys to retrive a hero, or take out any of the legion bases, but they can send the finest troops to hunt down some lone stranger psychicly in the whole of the Mojave?
Caesar I at least see as being petulant and stupid enough to do this, but still can't explain the who, what, where, when and why? factor of knowing it was you how comited any act against him.

If you want a combat challange, just go nuts in a faction base with less than optimal equipment.
Try taking down every BoS member at their base with no sneaking or armour.

I just got done with a Legion character playthrough. Just before the Hoover Dam battle I went around and wiped out every NCR outpost I could find, and I have to say, Rangers had me reloading saves pretty frequently (on very hard). Seemed like it only took a couple of shots for them to take me down, and I was wearing power armor. I think a psycho mercenary group, the Mojave chapter of the Talon Company or whatever, would be great.

I agree about the NCR and Caesar with the assassination squads.... but this last one is also a little anti-RP if you don't want to hurt that faction. I've done it for the challenge, but it would be more fun if it fit into the story a bit better.

Maybe the unrealistic respawns would make more sense if it was the Fiends --or something like a certain new and devastating NV SuperPsycho drug that kept turning regular wastelanders into NEW crazed fiends. ...and they were a lot more numerous and popped up anywhere, and, let's see, how about a quest to find and destroy the cooking site of the nasty SuperPsycho/Meth/PCP. First you have to clear out the horde of foamy-mouthed guards, then you have to rig it to blow like Megaton, but you have to set a timer and rrruuuunnnn instead of detonating from a safe distance!

BA-BOOOOOOMMMMM!!!! (*the Courier is slammed to the ground even at a half mile distance from the blast.*)(*rain of debris for several seconds*) (the firey glow of the decimated buildings fades slowly. Black smoke towers into the desert sky.)

Woo!

Of course, notes found on guards and computers at the site tell you of a connection to a conspiracy in one or two of the other factions, sickening greed and corruption and, let's say, traced its roots all the way back to the severe and well known mental decline of a pre-war captain of industry.

... and the destruction of the cooking site would still leave large quantities of the nasty chem out in the hands of unsuspecting wasters...

*ahem* :whistling:
At any rate, the FWE mod for FO3 included a chunk of code that tweaked the enemy AI's pretty nicely so they wouldn't just rush the Wanderer. If their health got a little low, they'd seek cover and fire from it when you poked your head out. It got to be really tricky if they had a good gun and the terrain made it hard to flank them.

I have to agree with this too.

Do you guys think that, during the EBoS-Enclave war, the Talon Company to steal or capture Enclave equipment, I think the FO3 Enclave Power Armor would work great for Talon Company Storm Troopers, not to mention captured Enclave scientists and technology. I'd imagine regular Talon Company Mercs to have combat armor, then get Combat Armor Reinforced Mk. 1 and Combat Armor Reinforced Mk. 2 as they rise in rank, then getting Talon Company Storm Trooper Armor. Man, I like Talon Company too much.

i just thought of a setup just for this thread :)
"the renegade shadows"
an elite mercenary group armed with anti material rifles and modified marksman carbines, the utilize stealth boys to get in, kill the leader and officers unnoticed, and leave the area, all the while the troops of the opposing force dont realize until they have sent theyre main force, armed with light machine guns and gauss rifles, at which point, with no one to direct, lead them, or aid them, they are easily dispatched. the reason they have practically never been heard of, is that their hired by people who want something done, with nobody ever finding out it was them, or if they are particularly heavy-pocketed, they can hir them to wipe entire settlements without an unsilenced gun going off. they take any job that pays well enough, whether gunning down murderers and drug physco's, or killing innocents, if the price is right, they do it. And if the employer threatens them by proposing to release info about them, fire at them, or order extremely odd missions (setups), they "remove" the employer.

That is the exact definition of the Talon Company. But FO3's scaling and player-godliness, not so.

Of all the awesome moments I had playing FO3, the top too both involved that huge, three way firefight between the courier, super mutants, and Talon Company out in front of the capitol building. One was emerging from a subway out into the mall for the first time after installing FOOK, the other I was coming from the opposite direction, leaving the capitol building with no stimpaks and almost no health. I went through my inventory and popped every DR increasing chemical I had (was using BLTC) only to find that half of them were hallucinogenic. Even the dam battle pales in comparison to clearing out the DC mall.

About better enemy AI, in FO3, it may have been scripted but the group of Enclave outside the Library would react somewhat tactically. They would seek cover and use covering fire with two of them as a third advanced to get a better shot on you. I say it might be scripted though as Enclave encounters in other parts of the DC waste seem to be about as dumb as most AI in the game but then again there wasn't much to use as cover compared to the DC area.

My point being maybe it's quite possible to have tactical AI for trained merc groups in NV.

yea, i kinda ripped from talon, but i did make them different in many ways,
-use stealth boys for missions (mainly)
-use far better tactics (vs the talons, run towards him then crouch by him and fire in plain view)
-actually are very threatening with their equipment now that DT is in, with DR combat armor (or power armor) was alot weaker

I dont think the Talon Company Mercs per se had bad AI, that was th strategy of all opposition in FO3. And yes, Combat Armor is great protection in NV, so Talon Company Mercs would be quite tough. Talon Company is already all of those things, but has an awesome symbol/flag. TALON COMPANY!

More enemies like NCR Rangers would be cool, i was fighting one of them that was using a Ranger Sequoia, and after i killed the guy i saw my life was only 3 bars from death, lol.

I think there should be another, new faction that specializes in energy weapons and robotics, as i don't think there are nearly enough of them. The only large group (besides the BoS) is the Fiends, and them being the 2nd highest makes me feel bad as they are basically raiders... why do they have som many energy weapons?

I have an idea for a group, but it really isn't that thought out

Talon Company Mercs use laser/plasma rifles and make use of robots they reprogrammed. Talon Company is the perfect solution to all problems...

Yeah lets rip off Talon Company! They really do svck. They attack you just because you have good karma. You can't make a deal with them. You take out their leader and main base and they just keep coming.

Fiends have some good weapons. I am not usre if anyone has noticed this but FO New Vegas goes back to the originals. Insted of FO3 where only 3-4 attack at once New Vegas can have 6 or more attack. Cazadores when they attack they attack in numbers and can be a pain. Legion and NCR take out their better weapons close to the end. NCR has people in power armour. When I make it to level 30 its pretty much the point where I say "Ok lets finish this play through."

Also I play hardcoe mode so I can't just pump myself full of stimpaks and heal on the spot in combat. I am playing once without it because I remember a conversation with a Mod and she said "are not curious as to what the difference will be" and I noticed I have most of the achievements so I decided to get the rest and one is heal 10,000 with food and I can't get that with hardcoe so it kills to birds with one stone. Still I find combat easier with the instant healling of stimpaks and other items.

Yea, but i don't like them that much :3

they just seemed sort of "there" in FO3, lol.

I do like their war with Super Mutants in the capitol building or wherever

I want one extremely high tech, like an evil (or evil-er, depending on your view) BoS. You would be able to join them tho

@Styles I know how you feel It ticks me off how Bethesda made a well-disciplined small army into cannon-fodder "EEEVIILL" karmic consequence. Talon Company has such promise as a faction in the hands of Obsidian. Oh and lore reveals that "someone" sent a large regiment of the Talon Company to the capitol wastes to breed chaos. Lost faction opportunities aplenty.

I agree but Talon Company comes form the west? For FO4 I hope Talon Company becomes a thinking faction, one that knows when to back off, one I can work for, one I can pay to go away, maybe even a follower that works for them and best of all one that has a reason for coming after me other then "Get the good guy!." Without the Reputation System in FO3 it made characters so stupid, how the hell do they know what my Karma is? (They can see into my soul! :ooo:)

Its not the caliber of enemies, but the locations where you face these enemies- usually wide open areas where sniping is always best option. FO3 had close combat situations in large buildings, streets full of rubble and usually plenty of cover for some nice gun fights. Deserts svck.

What about all the caves full of Deathclaws? Canyons full of Cazadores/Radscorpions, buildings full of Jackels, Vipers and powder gangers, sewers full of ghouls and rats? Legion Camp full of upset Legion? NCR bases full of Upset NCR?

My idea for a energy-oriented group:

- Name - Tech Fiends

- Look - Various different armors, usually modified versions of regular armor, like Raider armor up to Power Armor. The modified equipment usually is colored and has been added onto with metal plates, increasing their defensive strength. Their color scheme is black and green.

- Emblem - A graffiti style green skull on a black background

- Types - Tech Fiend, Tech Fiend Shocktrooper, Tech Fiend Elite, Tech Fiend Heavy, Tech Fiend Lord

--- Equipment ----------------------

-- Tech Fiend Raider Armor: black&green-colored raider armor and wastehound helmet modified by the Tech Fiends to add more coverage and give the mask green eyes. used by regular Tech Fiends

-- Tech Fiend Metal Armor: Lightweight Metal armor modified to give some more protection via some extra metal plates (making it's stats slightly higher but heavier), and coloring it black. There is a new helmet associated with this armor, it is a black metal helmet with a closed mask

-- Tech Fiend Combat Armor: A Green-colored Radiation suit that has been augmented with combat armor plates to add to it's effectiveness. Protects user from weapons and Radiation very well.

-- Tech Fiend Power Armor: Green and black colored. The torso & arms are made from t-45 d power armor, the legs are similar to centurion armor. They helmet is a modified NCR Ranger helmet.

-- Tech Fiend Lord Armor: A completely new armor, idk what it would be like...

-- They would use any kind of Energy Weapons and a few other types, like Laser Rifles, Plasma Rifles, Plasma Defenders, Plasma Casters, Gauss Rifles, Displacer Fists, Plasma Grenades, Pulse Grenades, Tesla Cannons, etc.
-------------------------------

- Tech Fiends would be numerous, and have heavily defended bases, complete with Laser Turrets and Robotic defenses. They would establish themselves in the out-of-the-way places, creating bases in places like the Devil's Throat and Searchlight Airport.

- They aren't dumb like Raiders either, they would be like other major factions just more ruthless in their pursuit of technology. They would be against everyone, though their main enemy would be the BoS

The whole point to fiends are that they are sooooo unpredictible due to no planning no coherent thought, and constant drug use.
Their EW's are due to the vault they raided, and maybe getting suplied by the Van Graffs at one point ( pure speculation on my part that is though ).
They could maybe steal or loot some combat armour, but only the nastiest 1 in 300 would get to wear it, and any group of mercs in CA would be more than a match for fiends imo.

Their strength lay in numbers and the four heads, and numbers do not make a legion, having the will of one does.

Most faction already in game are designed to be what they are, for the simple reasons of belief, tacics, situation, power, where they live, past conflicts and training, i.e roleplay filler.

Their equipment is based on the fact that many, I must say I touted this heavily that guns made far too much of an impact in FO3.
There were no tactics in fo3 other than npc's endlessly shooting unlimited ammo from strong guns at a player with a 96% hit rate.
I made a mod that gave NPC's a mix of new ranged and melee weapons and added effects such as knock down and shock to high tech ones like the power fist and super sledge.
Then removed unlimited ammo on all weapons, gave npc's a clip or two max for their ranged guns.
Which led to some amazing fights where raiders, outcasts, deathclaws and enclave fought each other went from ranged to melee, headed to droped guns with ammo left, fled often and pretty much never had the same fight twice.
All of which not once did I have to tweek A.I.

NV adds a lot of this, true that most areas the npc's react the same way everytime, but I can only put this down to the fact that where as my half arsed atempt at modding in FO3 was just mucking around.
NV's had to be polished to acomadate everyones style, and to make sure as few bugs as possible creept in.

The reason alot wanted this is so that every playstyle would be possible, some like immersion first, where npc's have equipment that shows how they would if FO was real to life.
Others like leveling and seeing uber characters with maxed out equipment take on uber foes with uber equipment first, which Oblivion did heavily, and FO3 did in its way.
Which many, many, many people complained about, and found a tad provocative, due to 85% of bandits in glass armour in the big O, and bullet sponges with high damage bonuses in FO3.

That said a new faction with, different armour and weapons that was well drawn out and written, with equipment that was not uber but provided a ranged tactical challange would work.
