Lack of threatening gun-weilding enemies

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 4:20 pm

After you reach a certain point with your character, human enemies just become ridiculously easy to dispatch, even on very hard. The "challenging" enemy for high level characters is supposed to be the Deathclaw, but they aren't very fun to fight. I think this game would be WAY better if there were gun wielding enemies later in the game that were legitimate threats, even to a level 30. The BoS is a joke, there should be a faction of super-elite mercenaries that wield marksman carbines and sniper rifles, that would require a character of ANY level to bring their A game.

Hmm, I agree, but if there is the faction of elite-mercenaries in next few DLCs, I'm gonna need more 45-70 GVT rounds.

How not? Imagine a New Vegas PC (you know, not all stats loaded I can do everything) running into a Talon camp. Missile launchers, snipers, combat armor, the works.

NCR Veteran Rangers should patrol the Mojave (and not wish for a nuclear winter) if they don't already. They wield AM Rifles, Brush Guns, and Sequoias.

And now imagine me with an Combat armor mk2, AP rounds and damage threshold running into these goons.

Hell even in F3 they were nothing more but a bunch disposable insect cannon fodders on higher levels.

Most of us farmed them in FO3 for parts to fix our gear. Something like the cheating Point Lookout enemies might be closer, but who really wants to fight an enemy that needs a stacked deck in their favor to be a challenge?

I agree. There is nothing to compare to the arrival of the Enclave in FO3.

They were wussies in Fallout 3. If you're going to have someone like that in NV, it'd be better for them to be an actual threat.

I'd have NCR ranger vet patrols and Legion vet patrols. Just give the legion vets some upper tier guns and AP ammo ala what the Centurions had at Hoover Dam.

Thats works, I had MMM increased increased Spawn in FO3 so I had to fight like a dozen of them in there wasteland spawn points, instead of like 4 of them at a time. There Fort was insane like upwards of 50 a floor. Oh how that was fun! (I had a team of 6 girls with me too so epic squad vs. company action.)

I wish I had this on PC....

but more on topic, yes, talon company was/still is a joke, and insanely battle-hardened vets with AP ammo would be a treat. however, unless you have a PC and mods, your SOL

Talon Company would be great, they wear good armor (Combat Armor is great protection in NV) and would use high-powered weaponry (Marksman Carbines, Trail Carbines, Assault Carbines, Grenade Rifles, and perhaps Riot Shotguns). They are effectively supplied, well-funded, and well-organized; Talon Company would make a great high-level "Raider-esque" faction.

wow, that sounds awesome! What Talon Co. should have been as you leveled up.

Yeah a big mayhem festival would be great. There's a taste of that
Spoiler
right near the end
, and it's nice and hectic.

I also really miss the random encounters/random spawns-- they added a great level of unpredictability. Combine that with a large group with some good guns and armor...

I'd also be into fighting other snipers like the sniper scurry-in-a-panic sequence in Halflife2. Yikes!

Talon Company also has a degree of technological know-how, as they utilized laser weaponry and assault robots in the capitol wastes. Imagine Talon Company Mercenaries in the Mojave, they are a mix of the Legion's toughness and NCR's technological advantage. They are the kind of medium sized militant-mercenary faction that would prosper in the Mojave, as no large law-bringing factions had emerged until very recently.

EDIT:POSSIBLE SPOILERS...

Yeah I agree, more hostile human groups ! And the rare encounter with wondering super mutants on their way to Black mountain.

I'd love to see the random raider groups that you encounter around Prim/Nipton/Novac become a more prevalent threat around that area, as you gain levels there continue to be random ambushes but with larger, better armed groups as you level up.

Random hostile, heavily armed and well equipped mercenary/prospector groups would be great to see occasionally too, to keep you on your toes. I'd love to see these groups randomly ambush your character if your carrying a large loot haul or just made a lot of caps. Maybe even follow you a while as neutral to hint of a possible ambush and for the speech savvy you could confront them and use the under utilised terrifying presence perk to avoid a confrontation.

I reckon the fiend territory could use much more random encounters of fiends rather than the very predictable locations and maybe after the fiends diminish there could be a bunch of prospectors that appear in the area with the occasional prospector turned junkie groups that may or may not become randomly hostile towards you in that area.

And what happened to the ranger/legion assassins ? It seems like the first time I pissed off the legion just one group of assassins jumped me then I never saw them again. As for the rangers, they threatened me with three days to clean up my act and three days became a week and before anything even happened I was given a pardon by all the major factions... These guys should bring the worst of the best your way, attacking you any time and with the best equipped people in the waste once your at higher lvls. Rangers in full combat gear and sniper rifles :D

As for super mutants I think on the very rare occasion it would be cool to run into the odd, very defensive super mutant group. They wouldn't come after you but would fire at you on until you engage or leave them alone. Night kin could also make the odd random encounter, ambushing you at night around the Black mountain/Novac/188 areas. Travelling those empty dry lakes at night might become that much more interesting when Night Kin start hit and run attacks on you.

I went into camp golf at level 30 and decided to invade the main building where all the vets where.
In sheer will of survival, I had to pull out my alien blaster to dispatch them. It was a hard battle. AMR's and Brush Guns really tear through my armor.

The main trouble with decent challenge human enemies is that most of said challenge comes from their gear. Once you are at high level and maxed out on your combat skill of choice, it's all about who has the better gear and hit points. Once you have taken out one group of those 'uber' enemies, you are back to equal footing.. except that the NPCs are dumb. They have to be either mass numbers or much tougher than you to pose a real challenge...

Now if the game could handle better tactics than 'run at the courier firing like crazy', we could have challenging enemies. Until then though, it's not really going to happen.

TALON COMPANY! KEEP FIRING! Hell, I would expect them to control a military base w/ howitzers and ammo/weapon manufacturing equipment. Man, I love Talon Company, I just want them in NV, if I could join them.
