Laptop pooping the bed

Post » Thu Dec 01, 2011 8:49 pm

So all of a sudden my laptop began going really slow, things stopped responding. Literally nothing would open when i restarted it. I tried to run an avast virus scan but it kept freezing. Running a malwarebytes scan in safe mode right now. Help?

NVM I'm an idiot... ignore me.

On second thought... how long have you owned it?

If it's been 2+ years of casual use, I'd say it's time to get the fans cleaned and such, I'm pretty sure that would help.

If you have your data backed up reformatting may be worth looking in to. I'd say check the temperatures but I assume it is doing this on start and not after a set amount of time?

I have had it for a little over a year. Not casual though, I game on it a ton. The scan in safe mode keeps freezing now. It does this on startup.

Have you tried running CCleaner? Scan/clean everything, including the registry. Beyond that, defragment your hard drives. I know that these would be simple solutions, but neglecting hard drive cleanup can cause hang ups like this.

EDIT: Nevermind. If it's freezing in safe mode it's probably a hardware problem. Still give the above a go, but I doubt it will help.

Yeah if it's freezing in safemode, I'd say it's a hardware issue and not a Virus or anything like that, you should crack it open and take a peek to see how dusty/dirty it is.

Just make sure all power sources are disconnected before you open it up, also don't touch anything inside of it if you don't want to risk damaging any sensitive electrical components.

Before you do that you should probably just monitor your temps with something like http://www.hwinfo.com/download32.html. There's no sense in messing around inside of a laptop if it's not your temps causing the problem.

According to SpeedFan everything is around 50. And it might've been just that one freeze in safe mode, itt hasn't happened for a while.

If it isn't overheating, sounds like a hard drive problem/corrupted system files.

I'm going to let this scan finish and run an avast scan while I sleep, if it's still bad in the morning I'll take it back to BestBuy.

Unless you just bought it, have fun paying out the wazoo to get it fixed.

Try a repair install of Windows and scan the hard drive for errors before doing that

Backup your hard to replace data (this'll be easy since you've been doing it all along, right? Right?). Once you've done that, run a system recovery. It's super easy to do and I've seen it fix SO many slow computers its not even funny. This is a far better solution than taking it to Best Buy... Where they'll charge you to do a system recovery.

Have you done a restore? Presuming you make restore points frequently, that's usually worth a try. It fixes most issues I've had and the only thing you're going to lose is anything recently installed.

Wait a moment... "Laptop pooping the bed" ? Did that cross your mind as it was laying on your bed running ? Please tell me you are not letting your laptop run while it is on your bed, by all things sacred that's like suffocating the poor thing! No amount of fans can save the hardware from overheating if airflow in and out of the laptop is restricted.

Just want to know if you are doing that, it's far too common for people to accidentally get too comfortable with their laptop leaving it on their lap in bed with a blanket in between clogging up any space below the laptop where air should be able to flow freely.

I thought the OP meant the labtop overheated and left burnt marks that look like...."stretch marks".

1. Boot off a Linux live CD to recover your files

2. Most laptops have a factory restore boot option, otherwise use your restore CDs.

I my self have just minutes ago had connection issues with wifi but I don't think its serious. as far as the op's troubles  there are a million things that can be responsible for severe cpu lag. I'd do a ctrl+shift+esc to check where the cpu is being eaten up. if it says that not much cpu is being used it may be a hardware issue.

take in mind I am not very good but I am sure checking that might help you at least get more simptom info to troubleshoot your problem.

I could be mistaken, but do you mean "skid marks"?
