There's a lot of DECENTLY-known games being mentioned here; just because the mainstream media hasn't picked up on them (or continues to do so) like they do every latest Battle Calls: Field of Duty release, doesn't mean that no one knows about them.
Now, to mention a game that some of you MIGHT remember me talking of before, that few know of... There was this little-known space RPG from 1990 called Hard Nova. Basically, it was a sort of mash-up of space-based games and ground-based games; so kinda like X3: Reunion meets Knights of the Old Republic a decade and a half before either game existed. It featured a pretty solid gameplay system, non-frustrating controls, relatively well-done dialogue systems, (fun fact: you could end any conversation early, including by simply shooting the NPC a la "Han Solo shot first") and a variety of gameplay activities. (smuggling, trading, space combat, ground combat, surface combat, etc.)
Only real downside is the game is so TINY. Judging from the length of some "Let's Play" videos done of it (which I'd recommend for more information) the entire main storyline lasts maybe up to 4-5 hours, and most side-content doesn't add more than maybe an hour or two more before it gets stale and repetitive. In comparison to other space-sim games, the world is comparatively tiny: 7 planets across 4 star systems, with around 30 surface locations to explore on foot. The game does have decent character and story development, though, with over a dozen characters available for your party.
