Level Scaling (Krev the Skinner - SPOILERS)

Post » Mon May 21, 2012 2:18 pm

Level Scaling is the biggest problem with this game. Without doubt the mobs that scale are utterly broken. Having mobs that can kill in two moves while being able to run after you without losing stamina (so you can't get space to heal) and themselves take a fraction of even the most damage you can deal has spoilt the game experience for me. Krev The Skinner is the worst i've seen so far. I cannot beat him at all, regardless of werewolf (which is worthless against him since you are no better off). Perks and upgrades make no difference at all. Im really frustrated with this and I can't believe Bethesda have made such stupid design choices. It ruins the game.
I've played sensibly saving throughout the quest and now i'm stuck at the door to the final fight where he appears and there's nothign I can do. I've got realy high archery, a decent set of weapons and armour, all upgraded, my skills are at good levels with lots of archery and sneak attack perks and none of it means a damn - and it's not as if he's alone either. He's even immune to the Disarm shout ffs!
I really cannot understand what the developers were thinking at all.

Im not so sure how this is related to level scaling (though I agree its still an issue), but this sounds odd, I had very few problems with him

I don't know why he's so overpowered. If it isn't because he's scaled then the developers are not doing their job. There is nowhere that says 'this quest is too hard for you' and at that point you can't back out. You get the option to become a werewolf - simple enough. Then you find you're embroiled into a quest to kill Krev and his gang. Everything up until you face him is fine, but he is utterly broken. Immune to shouts, takes next to no damage (i've got almost every archery perk at skill of 62 and level 24) and kills you instantly. How is that good game design?

hm yea okey, I faced him as a sword and shield warrior type, So I was able to fend off most of his strikes with a well palced shield bash,It may well be anightmare as an archer

I tore him to pieces as a werewolf, only had a scrap of HP left once they were all dead but it is possible. I'd say archery isn't ideal in that situation though and sounds like that's were most of your leveling has gone.

This is just completely broken. The guy can kill in one hit ffs. Doesn't matter what i use, bow, mace, wolf form. None of it does anything.

Yeah Archery is not a skill I'd pick as my 'main combat' skill, it's just not good enough when you consider that, in some situations, you're stuck in close quarters with someone tough as part of a quest/plot.

My advice to you is just turning the difficulty down a notch or two, for just this fight. There's no shame in that.

Edit: Don't you have Vilkas, or the other of the two brothers with you on that mission? Let him tank.

Rubbish.
In wofl form you can't block at all and the guy kills you in one hit. There's no way you killed him and his three helpers in wolf form at all.

Lowering difficulty makes no difference whatsoever. Damage output is the same, he takes next to no damage in response. In fact nothing changes whatsoever.

Broken game. I'm not putting up with crap like this ffs.

Strangely I had no problem as a level 19 bow-only charachter. Stealth attacked him and staggers from power shot took care of the rest.

How many times have you raised your health during level ups?

And do you have any other combat skills aside from archery, or even any high level scrolls? It seems like beth purposely made this game in such a way that the best way to go is not to focus on one skill, but branch out, and use many skills in tandem. Archery can be really effective, but there's not a whole lot you can do with it up close. I wouldn't call that a design flaw in my opinion since it adds a level of realism.

I was having the same problem until I used unrelenting force (full power) and blew him clean across the room. I ran through the others and attacked him with a dual wield power attack with exquisite level Skyforged steel waraxe and elven dagger - he died. After that me and Aela mopped up the rest as normal.
I don't know why but as I entered that room I discovered that I'd lost the keybinding on the "z" key so my shouts wouldn't work, so I had to dive into my inventory and enable it again. Don't know whether it happens on purpose or if I hit a bug somewhere but it confused the hell out of me for a while.

Level Scaling takes the mick. I'm only at level 25 and have been forced to lower my diffculty to Apprentice, and even that can be too challenging sometimes, because enemies just do a rediculous amount of damage.

I have noticed something similar with regular mobs - in one place I was clearing a bunch of Silver Hands out, and amonst all the identically named foes there was one that was massively tougher. This one Silver Hand would one-shot me, and took almost no damage from any of my attacks. Using save games and some luck I finally killed him and his loot was the same as all the rest. This has happened 3-4 times on my first runthrough - it almost feels like once in a while a mob spawns at it's maximum possible level, rather than the scaled level it's supposed to.

If this were to happen on a named enemy, that would indeed make for a really tough encounter!

Seriously, swallow your pride and lower the difficulty. IF you cannot beat him at Novice, then stop playing Skyrim. Are you really blaming Bethesda for making though bosses?

It must be a bug. I fought him at level 9 and won in werewolf form.

He was relatively easy.

More challenge is what Bethesda NEED right now. Seriously, quit wining about how you need to excert effort lest we end up with Obliivon's scaling system again.

I beat him as a werewolf on expert. If you didn't know you can fear pretty much any humanoid npc by pressing Z while in werewolf form. Also, power attacking knocks them back and down for a while. But yeah, I was surprised how hard he hit, but since there are easy ways to deal with it, I don't think it needs changing.

Rubbish? I've done it on two different characters and in wolf form both times. Just because you failed doesn't mean everyone else did.

I killed hi easily enough that I never even read his name and wasn't aware that it was a tough fight. Must have gotten lucky I guess.

I was lvl 20 or something I think and I used wolf form to kill him. Quite often wolf form power attacks knock back so I ended up dodging his first swing and knocking him back and just shredding him with power attacks, ending him by ripping his throat out when he hit 1/4 hp. Howling will send some of his protectors running.

Was playing on expert. Wolf form is squishy but has a lot of cc.

Playing on expert, that encounter was a bit tough for my archer as well. I didn't know werewolves had a "fear shout," either. Winning strategy at the time was: Maul the guy at the tanning rack asap, then bounce between the remaining few with constant power-attacks. Focus on killing one when you have an opening (everyone is knocked down or feared). The fight gets exponentially easier once a couple drop, as you get more time to damage a single target, instead of running between them to crowd-control.

Are you on masters difficulty?
