Lockpicking Perks are Surprising

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 4:51 am

You should still put 60 points in smithing so you can upgrade magical weapons. That's what I did at least, but that's all I'm putting i two perks. I plan on having both smithing and enchanting to 100 but putting no perks in enchanting and only two in smithing.

I used to think that the lockpicking perks were a total waste, but my current character is practically a pure adventurer always looking for treasure so I took the Golden Touch and Treasure Hunter perks to try it out and I can't play this type of character without these perks. The perks are really useful if your not doing enchanting and stumble upon some really nice enchanted gear that you can use. I just love finding so much more treasure making every adventure epic. Plus this is my first character that relies heavily on alchemy as opposed to restoration, so it's nice to have some treasure to help me buy ingredients and sustain this craft.

It's just so much rewarding finding a chest with a diamond, circlet of major alchemy, ebony war axe, an expensive spell tomb, and 300 gold.

funny, because I got insulted a lot last month for saying this same thing...

I don't have a single lockpicking perk, but I can open any lock that doesn't require a key.

Both lockicking and pickpoketing have a few extra perks that work outside their main focus of action, but it's not enough - if lockpicking had more advantages then there could be "open" spell in the game.

if you read the OP post, you'll probably notice that lockpicking isn't all about picking locks, but also have nice perks to get more and better equipment and money... -_-

You can still create a lot better gear yourself, and buy very good things from merchants.

that if you invest your perks in smithing and enchanting, or speechcraft to have discounts...if you dont's its quite usefull
eventually if you play a thief makes more sense to have lockpicking and pickpocketing instead of smithing

Role-playing changes everything, yes. Of course a thief should use lockpick and pickpock. But that doesn't mean it's as good as smithing + enchanting combined, or even as good as none of them at all and buying things from merchants. Money isn't a big problem either, you don't need discount perks to be able to buy good gear from merchants.

still, if you decide not to perk smithing and enchanting, lockpicking is a good alternative (also is one tree against two, so makes sense isn't as good)

Ah, I see I misread. That's dumb though. You shouldn't magically find better equipment and stuff in chests just because you're good at picking locks.

You don't need a single perk in smithing or enchanting to be able to make better gear than you can find.Steel smithng and arcane smithing are the only ones you actually need to be able to get a lot of power, thanks to skyforge steel

nope, the enchants are actually better on the items you find if you don't perk enchanting.

i have yet to use more than 15 picks on a master lock with no perks. And i dont reload on failures. Lockpicking is reallly easy. Just dont use the mouse. Locks are not rerandomized good enough. 1 lock is used to determine where approximately the entry point is, and after that it takes around 5 locks to pick the master.

not the perks we were talking about...
we were talking about the one that lets you find more and better items, does not involve locks

Treasure hunter? Costs 5 perks, which do nothing.. A bit too much imho for a simple chance to get a gear piece which is possible to get from a shop. (enchanting aside). Shops are basically portable renewable chests already.

Besides, if not using enchants, it is realistically to expect that the player wont be using other "shady" stuff. <-- What this means is gained items amount is also limited by carry weight. With or without Treasure hunter, the player will have to stop at 300weight units of cool items, and return to town. With Treasure hunter it will happen maybe 5 minutes sooner. So thats all it does, a bit of a time saver. Since you dont actually get anything unique with it, just quantitatively more stuff.

Picking locks is so easy anyway, and after the amount of chests you find anyway I can't see Treasure Hunter or Golden Touch been too good either by the time you can invest in them. Way I see it you can get more use out of those perks without wasting them in Lockpicking, but each to their own.

Everything speaks against it. Sure, it might be best if you choose to not get better gear in any other way, but that's it. It's not like you'll find a daedric sword upgraded to legendary wtih 25 points absorb HP and 25 points fire damage.

i wouldnt say its useless, nothing is, but too expensive for a 5 perks investment. I take it you have it selected. What items have you got out of chests?

(i do like in theory what this perk does, Nothing was worse in Morrowind, than clearing a dungeon and find a master chest with nothing but a few arrows)

most noticeable at high levels are some daedric armor parts with enchantments (I found them around lvl57).
you can also get enchanted ebony (and glass if you are into light armor) at early levels, more useful potions (including blacksmith and enchanter ones), and lots of enchanted rings and necklaces and also more materials.
I also found lots of daedric arrows, which is really good for my archery/one-haned/light armor/lockpicking/sneaking char

I've had a couple of chests in Skyrim like that, used a ton of picks to unlock a Master Chest and find...13 gold! What? Re-load as it must be random, get the thing open again...13 gold! You cheeky gits!

That "plant poison in someone's pockets" perk is awesome. Try these poisons, they're a blast:

Giant Lichen + Skeever Tail + DeathBell

Imp Stool + Orange Dartwing + Canis Root

And for those pesky mages: Human Heart + Troll Fat + Hanging Moss
