My love and hate for Skyrim.

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 6:14 pm

I love Skyrim's world, and the open-ended concept of gameplay that Skyrim has....and that's probably where my love for it ends.

The lies told about this game were extraordinary, literally.

A. But, anyway, let's get down to some cons. The main questline, regarding you know, killing Alduin, etc. led to the most shallow, empty ending I've ever experienced in my entire life. Literally. That was the most unrewarding thing I've ever seen. I go through hours of gameplay to kill a big black dragon, which in itself was easy as Hell, then..nothing. Absolutely nothing. Nothing changes. Nothing happens.

B. Here's another thing: the lack of actual character development. I feel no real attachment to my character, at all. It's as shallow and empty as the main questline itself. No matter what you really do, it's not going to TRULY register with the rest of the game world.

C. Civil war questline was literally dumb, and utterly pointless. You end a civil war, going through tons of miniature fort raids and miniature sieges, to see nothing has really changed. Some people even still complain about the other faction ruling, rofl. The world remains literally untouched, and indifferent to everything you did.

D. Bethesda continues to prove they care literally nothing about their console fans, who pay hard money just as much as PC players do, to enjoy their games. Really, all Bethesda does is leech off of the console community. That's all they've ever done with TES.

E. Lol why was there a new engine promised? There is no new engine; it's the same terrible graphics with a few moderations and adjustments to it. Pathetic.

Overall, Bethesda has lost my respect, completely. I doubt I'm the only one too. Especially in the PS3 community, with their blatantly rampant disregard for PS3 players. ((I'm a 360 player myself, but still.))

These aren't the only problems, either. Like terribly short guild questlines that make no difference. I'm now the leader of the Companions, oh lord, oh God, I must be amazing. Yet everyone still addresses me as "the new guy." Rofl. Get with the times, Bethesda NPC's. Broken AI. Bugs, rampant bugs. Etc.

My only real question is..

Really, Bethesda? Really, breh?

Cool story, bro.

I am having a lot of fun with this game.
Two different characters playing the game in two different ways, and I feel that both have a personality that I am connected to.

I have not encountered a single bug or glitch (except some disappearing water textures) and both characters are at level 40+
I thoroughly enjoyed the Main Quest, and the civil war, and the two factions I have done.
The side quests are some of Bethesda's best yet.

Second best TES game (Morrowind still wins first) :D

I don't even know. I mean, the gameworld itself is huge, and gorgeous. I've been caught, when I was kind of..tripping balls, staring at the sky for hours. That's probably how I put in over 40 hours into gameplay, because the quests themselves are not long enough to go that long. TEEHEE.

There's things I love about Skyrim, but there's more I absolutely hate about it. Bethesda could end up creating the best RPG of all time, LITERALLY, if they just added a bit more depth, an actual NEW engine, and started caring about some of their fans.

PS3 issues are hardware issues from Sony not using universal memory. Not Beths fault they purposely used an idiotic idea, when every else uses universal memory.

Regarding the bugs, that's you. You don't speak for the tons of players that have encountered dumb, and occasionally serious, bugs. I haven't even encountered many bugs myself aside from a few like the rare, amazing backwards flying dragon prior to the 1.3 patch, and the Thieves' Guild glitching to the point I couldn't even progress in it anymore.

Third best. In order, Morrowind and Oblivion still win over it.

They care nothing for their console players? Um . . . the game was developed for the consoles. Us PC guys got a sub par port, with a UI geared towards consoles. We got a directX 9 game for crap sakes! My gpu supports directX 11!

You're rant is pretty subjective too. I found the end was awesome. But then my tastes are largely different. I don't need some huge change to the world. You, as the Dragon Born were trying to save the world, and you did that. If there was some epic change, I would think that would class as a fail.

The civil war stuff was awesome in my opinion. I went Stormcloak first time, and found the politics quite interesting. It added a whole new level to the game that Oblivion certainly lacked. There was a genuine air of instability throughout the province, and there was no black and white, this side is good, this side is bad. They both had their pros and cons, their good and their bad. That made it more believable.

And being a sandbox game, they can't go and deeply script everything in the game so every experience is like a rail road game. It just isn't possible. If they were to do deep scripting for every npc for every possible reaction, to every possible event that the player may do, due to being a sandbox game, they'd still be working on the game for the next five years.

This isn't Mass Effect, with a handful of places to go, and a handful of people to meet. There are just far too many options.

That's because the MQ is not supposed to be the end of the game. This is an open world game, not an on rails adventure. You saved the world? Good, but nobody outside that group of influencial people who were at the meeting in High Hrothgar knows about it. You saved the world because you were the only one who could do it, not to become a superstar.

B. Here's another thing: the lack of actual character development. I feel no real attachment to my character, at all. It's as shallow and empty as the main questline itself. No matter what you really do, it's not going to TRULY register with the rest of the game world.
I've seen a lot of instances where what I do influences the world and people aknowledge this. Saying "nothing" registers is exaggerating something just to prove your flawed point

C. Civil war questline was literally dumb, and utterly pointless. You end a civil war, going through tons of miniature fort raids and miniature sieges, to see nothing has really changed. Some people even still complain about the other faction ruling, rofl. The world remains literally untouched, and indifferent to everything you did.
Haven't played the civil war yet.

D. Bethesda continues to prove they care literally nothing about their console fans, who pay hard money just as much as PC players do, to enjoy their games. Really, all Bethesda does is leech off of the console community. That's all they've ever done with TES.
Funny, most PC gamers say exactly the opposite.

E. Lol why was there a new engine promised? There is no new engine; it's the same terrible graphics with a few moderations and adjustments to it. Pathetic.
Matter of taste really. I find the graphics preety nice and the majority of people would disagree with you.

Overall, Bethesda has lost my respect, completely. I doubt I'm the only one too. Especially in the PS3 community, with their blatantly rampant disregard for PS3 players. ((I'm a 360 player myself, but still.))
I agree here with regards to PS3 version.

I honestly think that whoever is making all these great Elder Scrolls mods should exercise creative control over the game. I will give Bethesda a lot of credit for making games that other people make great. Oblivion without mods = tedious. Oblivion with mods = brilliant.

Bethesda can never seem to keep up with their mod community - probably because the mod community isn't afraid to aim at hardcoe nerds, instead of trying to make it appeal to everyone.

Also, rules being rules - there are spoilers in this game? I had the plot figured out in like 45 minutes without even looking it up. Elder Scrolls games (at least after Daggerfall) have transparent storylines. The in-game content (books, etc) can be great and original, but the actual story-arcs are so generic fantasy as to be generated by a Dragonlance Madlibs.

Make me an TES game with a storyline like Michael Moorcock or Jack Vance would put out and I'll be impressed - but 'chosen one fights a lotta orcs until he gets to the BIG SEMIDIVINE BOSSFIGHT' - come on, dude, you guys aren't even trying.

Make the stories in TES more like the ones in the in-game books, instead of two-bit mass-produced fantasy pulp.

Spoiler
And you're correct, you're Dragonborn, born to save the world from a big fun dragon, and you did that, to the T. That, in itself, was awesome. I just find it logical that it would actually change something in the game world besides the fact you don't have to kill as many random, psychotic dragons.

And no, Bethesda themselves stated this game was developed for the PC. All you guys' got was a bad HUD. They still even prioritize patches for the PC.

Nothing is really much worse than it was in Oblivion imo (well maybe except for lack of spell variety/spell creating -- there's probably a few other things you could point out). Also, on D. I'm pretty sure PC gamers have the same complaints. But really, the only thing I find I can praise Skyrim for is the side content. There's a lot of it, and a lot of it seems to be executed well, in certain regards. A lot of quests that I just happened upon randomly drew me in pretty well, and I just find that I can side quest so much more than I could in Oblivion (I think something like the last 20-40 hours of gameplay was just side-questing hopping)

At any rate, I have quite a few complaints as well (though not quite the same as yours), and am installing Morrowind as we speak.

Why didn't you just named this thread "my hate for Skyrim"?

Probably because I simply love the concept of Skyrim, and again, like I said, I fell in love with it's gameworld. I was simply let down by the total lack of depth. Immersion, in terms of the actual environment, is success.

Like I said, there are things I love about Skyrim, there's just more I hate about it.

depth: truth

new engine: tbh don't really care about that

care about fans: I suppose, though really I think it's just economics. they make more when they appeal to a wider audience. I'm more upset for the general gaming populace for having bad taste.

I agree with the general sentiment of "cmon, bethesda, you're so close", though

That's not the point. I was actually curious if Bethesda had put in some twisting plot involving complicated elements rather than the obvious "big bad boss". I had no idea of the name of the boss or that the game ends in killing a boss dragon. That is a spoiler imo, as you are not lead onto that anywhere in the game that I've seen.

This is more of the "snape kills dumbledore", "Andrew Ryan is your father", etc. [censored], [censored]s me off to no end and totally takes out all the immersion I was feeling....should've gone to bed an hour ago and not read the damn forums. Seriously, people are putting in effing "spoiler alert" buttons for QUEST LORE and you drop the ending and act like it's "no big deal" just because you're upset at the game....

Vampires.

Tell me in what way it was obvious? The game has dragons flying around all over the place like a race. There is no mention of a giant end boss dragon in the game. I had no presumption about Bethesda being predictable or unpredictable, I was leaning towards creative and now it's spoiled.

Pete Hines had said it was developed for the 360, and ported to both PS3 and PC.

What should change in the world? Who knew other than a handful of people what you were doing?

My comparison to Mass Effect was to illustrate the differences in game style. In Mass Effect, you really only meet a handful of people. This allows them to be more broadly scripted. It's a more cinematic experience. Your choices have more effect, but the world is very limited, so they can do that. In a game like Skyrim, the world is just too vast, the options too many, and the people you can interact with far too numerous to get the kind of character depth that you are looking for. Other than the handful of characters in the main quest, and even a couple of the major side quests, everything else is based around light scripting and AI. To do it in the manner Mass Effect was done, they'd have had to not have an open world sandbox game, and have far fewer npcs.
