Mage Race

I was wondering what you would suggest as a race for a Mage Build. Other than Thalmor of course I am saving Thalmor for a different Build Later.

Breton? Just read the race descriptions.

And "Thalmor" isn't a race, but I assume you mean Altmer (High Elves).

Thanks

high elf- +50 magicka to start out with and can regenerate magicka (with racial ability)

breton- Resistance to magicka (25%) and can absorb enemy spells and convert the absorbed spell's energy into magicka (racial ability)

These are the 2 best races for pure mage.

You should really be thinking of getting to someplace warm instead of dying to hypothermia thinking about Skyrim imho.

The greatest necromancer of all time was an altmer psijic mage named, "Mannimarco, King of Worms"

But practically, bretons are great necromacers due to their inherent +10 to conjuration and they have a natural 25% resistance to magicka which helps a ton since your only real problems in this game are rival mages and archers. The resistance helps against mages.

This is an interesting topic to me as I'm one of those that can never settle on a character/race. I've almost always chosen Altmer for my mages because I have such a hard time passing up what essentially equates to 5 free levels of magicka. With that said, if it wasn't for the problem with Dead Thralls I'd love to try a Necromancer again, but use a Breton.

Breton for the long haul. Permanent magic reisstance, and a spell absorption power.

Altmer's magicka bonus becomes irrelevant in later game (when you're working with 0 cost, or heavily reduced costs anyways), and magicka regen boosts really don't work well at all in combat (when you'd actually need them).

Orcs get the early enchanting boost, along with some weapon skills to handle situations early on when the magicka runs out. Berserker rage is also a massively powerful defensive buff, even with the offense side not mattering to mages.
Nords are also pretty solid, having the Battlecry to get out of sticky situations, and that 50% cold resist can save on enchanting slots, which're quickly taken up on a caster.

How high in Majika should I go up? If I can get spells to take a minimal amount of Majika then I defiantly should not go too high into Majika. But to keep the fun of been a Mage I don't really want high Health or Stamina either.

I am playing Master by the way just to give a scope of how much I would need in health and Majika to keep the game hard, but not insanely hard.

Has anyone else gone with Full Majika only on master difficulty, and how did that work out for you?

i prefer Altmer myself. The extra magicka comes in handy and even if you zero cost one magic school, you have to have magicka for the rest. The master spells are pretty expensive magicka-wise. Conjuration is extremely easy to level up so the starting bonus doesn't matter that much. The magicka regen ability is not 100% needed but nice to get you out of a heavy situation. The breton's absorb and resitance powers are great but I'm sitting on 70% magic resist and 30% absorbtion as well.

The race that is most suited to be a mage is Altmer.

Necromancer would be Altmer actually, lorewise. In Oblivion, you can hear npc's mentioning an increase in necromancer in the summerset isles. Also, Mannimarco, the antagonist of the Oblivion mage guild is a famous necromancer who is an altmer. I believe there are many other references to it as well.

Bretons, lorewise, would make shamans, witches, and druids. My breton is a shaman type. In TES II: Daggerfall, high rock is home to many witch covens. And in Skyrim one of the beginner spells for bretons is summon familiar, which basically conjures a wolf spirit.

Forgive me, but I'm not too sharp on my mythology. What's the difference between a Shaman, Witch, Druid, Conjurer? I've always just considered a mage a mage...which very little time reading these boards tells me is quite wrong.

Just for lore, necromancy is a High Elf kind of thing if you ask me. But most mages tend to be High Elf or Breton, that's just the way it goes... To play, I prefer Breton, actually partly because High Elves are so tall. Silly reason but there you go.

A Nord necromancer might be quite cool given the plot... Cooler than 36 degrees anyway.
