Maven Black-Briar has too much power

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 10:52 am

I think even the Thalmors are afraid of her and she has a really big chance to become High queen or even the Empress since she has so much connection and power. She could create a huge personel army too with all that wealth and power. What do you think?

Only if you side with the Imperials in the Civil War and did not destroy the Dark Brotherhood.

Her major powers are the thieve's guild and the Dark Brotherhood. One gets her information, the other whacks political rivals. And she becomes Thane of Riften if the Imperials conquer/liberate it.

Also, I doubt the Thalmor are afraid of her. They beat the Empire fairly easily by the looks of it- some corrupt old woman with ties to the Dark Brotherhood stands no chance at harming their long-term goals. The Dovahkiin, on the other hand...

Well, considering I've defeated all of her mercenaries at the lodge and knocked her to her knees several times I think the only source of her power is her essential tag bestowed upon her by Bethesda.

And, I've already killed one Emperor soooo: NEXT!

Even if you don't side with the imperials Maven still has controls over Jarl Laila Law-Giver. She actually forced her to pay for merchants that the bandits robbed, even know that the city is essentially broke. Maven can manipulate someone a great deal.

Not sure thought, that the Thalmors are afraid of some aging businesswoman.

Anyhow I wish Bethseda could let us marry Maven. Maybe that's all she needs... is a nice dominating man to take over her. Shes been probably lacking that for some time now. She probably hasn't gotten laid in a long time so it will make anyone grouchy. The dragonborn can cure that right up... Maybe changing her from being a [censored] to becoming pleasing angel.

Atleast Maven cares for her town, its people and its trade , jarl lalla or whatever her name is doesn't and just is a puppet
Maven might be using more unconventional methods to keep control( very machialellian) atleast she isn't a dressed up dumb witted blonde bimbo as the jarl

Maven has too much control over the TG. As Guildmaster, we should sever connections with her and establish our own contacts rather than relying on Maven.

Ah, bah! Her "power" will die with her. She has no legacy to offer. Do you think the popinjay Hemming will succeed her? The murderous Sibbing? Like most offspring of wealthy and ruthless people, they lack any of the initiative to achieve anything on their own, having been given everything they've got. That leaves Ingun, who has no love of the clan. On the other hand, she is smart and enterprising enough to do well on her own, but she'll let Maven's petty empire die.

I'm not sure she has the connections she thinks she has, or she is simply lying about them to drive off competitors. She of course does have solid connections with the Thieves' Guild. They needed her when they fell on such hard times. The 'Brotherhood, though..

Small example: Me, listener of the Dark Brotherhood and owner of the illustrious den of evil known as the fully renovated Dawnstar Sanctuary, simply enjoying a day in Riften. I hadn't started the Thieves' Guild line, yet - Nor had I started the Civil War line.

I'm a sociable person, so I tend to talk to everyone as I pass them by. Maven strolls by in that arrogant way that she does. I don't remember the conversation all that well, but it basically turned into a pissing match wherein she threatened me with murder. At the hand of the Brotherhood. That I command.

I agree with everyone else, though. I always side with the Imperials - and I always play a virtuous, heroic character. (At least I try to. Skyrim makes it hard.) I'd love to take her down a peg.

She doesn't really have a good relationship with the DB, if she even has one. Check her basemant. They won't even fulfill a contract for her. As far as I can tell, her power only extends to Riften, the Thieves' Guild which is actually only using her, and an invitation for a party at the Thalmor embassy.

I just steal all the mead from her brewery every few days and sell it to Tonilia for 10 bucks a pop. She'll go broke eventually...

I agree with you. When you're in hanging out in Mistveil Keep where Laila Law-Giver is located at you would occasionally hear commotions regarding to the civil war. She confessed that she has an escape route that would leave her people behind if the imperials was to raid the city. To me that means that shes a coward, and unable to fight for her people. IMO she has no backbone and have no right to be Jarl. I rather have Maven be Jarl then someone like Laila.

Maven has too much control over the TG. As Guildmaster, we should sever connections with her and establish our own contacts rather than relying on Maven.

Welcome to the business world. Why do you want to sever connections with her when she was the only one that was keeping the TG alive? Do we just stab her in the back? No. Money is money. You may not like her but she ranks in the gold.

Discipline is the key to success. My character had full plans to assassinate Olfrid Battle-Born, for hiring those thugs to attack him. I still have the contract letter.... but because he is connected with the TG now (After doing those special job tasks) my character used discipline to overcome his hatred for the man, since he is now helping the TG to rank in money.

I would kill him if he put out a contract on me. As for bringing in money for the TG: just like in any syndicate there would be someone who would gladly take his place.

In a RP point of view at the very beginning I desperately wanted to kill him. I was going to wait for that special moment to do it until I got so involved with the TG to the point where I had to do a special mission given to me by Delvin to go speak with the man. I didn't particularly like temporary working for him since I am a strong stormcloak supporter, but business is business. If it brings me gold then so be it. You leave your personal crap behind and follow the gold.

I can't possibly think of anyone that can replace Olfrid in whiterun had I killed him. Hes the only rich person that lives there.

People like Maven may not win a lot of points for many but look at it this way. If you side with her (not in the civil war) and become reliable that means more work and more gold you rank in.

1) If I'm head of the TG and the DB (which I am on my chick) then it's also professional. If he tried to have me killed once and failed I'm sure he'd try again. Just like he can be replaced as our contact in Whiterun so can I and I'm sure he knows that.

2) It's one city - if no one replaced him as our contact we'd be doing just fine with the other four.

3) "Personal crap"? He tried to kill you. He didn't merely bump into you in a bar and spill a drink on your shoes.

One of my first mods for Skyrim will be ability to kill the TG and WHOLE Black-Briar Family.

Riften can be such a wonderful home if those corrupted things weren't around.

To be fair in this I didn't exactly explain the timing of when this event occurred. I was given a quest by one of the Gray-manes to break into his house to find evidence regarding to the kidnapping of Thorald and his whereabouts. I stole his journal along with other goodies that I can find. Obviously he found out and hired a group of thugs to try to "put me in my place". So essentially I can't fault the guy for trying to teach me a lesson.

I really did wanted to kill him thought... and I wanted to kill that Astrid [censored] for sending her weak assassins to try to kill me 7 times before I joined their family, however since I'm a Septim [censored] I find it more profitable to join the dark brotherhood instead of destroying them. By killing the dark brotherhood you get 3 thousand gold while at the end of the dark brotherhood you get 20 thousand and that includes the contracts you do.

Sometimes you gotta say [censored] (rhymes with duck) it and go on. Skyrim is a dangerous place anyways :D

*sigh* The money is absolutely NOTHING by the time you get to that point. Every toon I have played past the first 15 levels has more gold than she can spend. My girls LIVE for wiping the DB off the face of Nirn. (More or less.... of course, in TES, nothing is a done deal forever.)

I must be the only person who never had assassins come after me - on either of my characters. :o I took the DB out fairly soon on my 1st character and joined them fairly early on on my 2nd one, but I'm sure I pissed a few people off before I got around to those two points. :P

FWIW: in Fallout 3 I had plenty of Talon Co come after me.
