I just wanted to offer this quote from Anita Frazier at NPD group:
"In one month, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is just about half a million units shy of matching Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in lifetime sales. Its first month performance was a five-fold increase over Oblivion's first-month sales. The game garnered outstanding review scores."
Also, just a reminder about perceptions of Christmas as a holiday... Christmas is celebrated in Japan, but only about 10% of the nation considers themselves Christian, so it is not celebrated as a religious holiday but simply as a celebration called "Christmas." This might also be worth considering since Bethesda is one of the few Western game companies to succeed in Japan, and this fact is especially interesting because Beth's games are pretty much the antithesis to various elements that have been claimed to be specific differences in acceptance between Japanese and Western game markets. I see a merging and cross-cultural exchange taking place, and hopefully this will continue in both directions with Western games offering much more East Asian visual aesthetics for character art, amongst other elements.
