sigh

You realize you guys are hypothesizing about how something could work...that isn't gonna happen?

But would it really cut into their profit margin that much? with all the other things you have to pay for on live it dosen't seem like that much.

Doesn't matter. They basically only make money off content, so they aren't gonna be facilitating free content. Toshiba makes money off selling you an electronic device, so they're perfectly happy with you getting free [censored] all day long. The more free [censored] there is to do with a Toshiba laptop, the more likely you are to buy one, so they're happy. Microsoft and Sony don't make any real money selling you an electronic device, so if they facilitate you playing free [censored], they're undercutting their income.

You also need to take into account that many mods can and will significantly increase the system requirements needed to run the game, perhaps on next gen consoles modding will become more viable.

Sure, but it's one thing to discuss hypotheticals that might not happen; it's quite another to discuss hypotheticals that will not happen.

Not unless they start making more money off the consoles themselves.

Also, games will simply up their requirements to match what the box is capable of, meaning there won't be a bunch of extra horsepower for mods to make use of.

true, but wouldn't that only apply to things like texture mods and graphical enhancements?

another reason for bethesda needing to approve which mods the community votes to go to console.

Is it so bad to dream? i know it definately will not happen, as bethesda has likely been trying this since morrowind. but i cant be sure if they have been or not, just assuming.

Nope. What about a mod that increases the number of "people" in Skyrim? Facing fifteen bandits at once puts a lot more demand on the system than facing three at once, even with no graphical improvements.

The problem with this is not implementation. Its matter of Microsoft and Sony not allowing it.
It is a matter of implimentation though. MS and Sony wont want it because user content can change any number of things, and they don't want to deal with the backlash of users doing something stupid making their game unplayable. If Bethesda can come up with a manageable way of implementing mods, then MS and Sony would be more willing to allow them. Steam Workshop is probably the first step to showing them that mods can be managed at an official level.

That said, mods for skyrim on consoles more then likely wont happen, ever.

Honestly, we should be posting this sort of thing on Sony and Microsoft forums. Bethesda is already set to get mods to the 360 just need to talk Sony and Microsoft into it.

They are bringing the internet explorer to the 360 and I'm guessing thats going to fuel fans to ask for mods from them.

Personally, I think Bethesda should create an "Official Mods on XBox and PS3" thread, similar to their official http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1366657-non-mmo-tes-multiplayerco-op-thread/ thread in Elder Scrolls General Discussion. We get so many of these threads, and everybody just keeps saying the same things back and forth, over and over and over. Obviously this topic is never going away so maybe it's time to create an official thread?

What if Wii decided to fully support modding from Bethesda and Bethesda started making games for them too?

Well that sure would be an interesting twist haha

I for one believe that the Steam Workshop is a step Bethesda took in forming some semblance of order regarding mods. Sony has worked with Valve and integrated with Steam for Portal 2 (buy Portal 2 on PC through Steam and you can play it on the PS3 if your PSN ID and Steam ID are linked). Like others have said, certain things would need to be filtered out such as texture mods, increased NPC mods, increased foliage mods, etc. This is why I see the Workshop as being the first step in creating a way to filter out those types of mods for the consoles, but there's always the possibility something unintended slips through which is probably the biggest problem. I know at least Sony isn't against user generated content for games as there are games available that allow for such, but Bethesda needs to prove they (as in they burden the server demands) can distribute the mods in a way that leaves no chance of something bad happening to the console.

maybe put a seperate version of creation kit on consoles, having it be more limited than pc creation kit. make it be another 60 bucks, it'll essentially be like another game. but then theres still the problem of dirty mods.

Or maybe they should come out with dlc mod packs full of fan-selected mods for console.
