It's sort of coincidence, just a likely one. Most big games come out in autumn (fall) because it's before xmas...it's not a really tough choice.

OP: It wasn't a pun until you made it one so if anyone is to blame...

It is all about money, they will release it ASAP unless to hold off for certain advantagous time (like christmas/not to compete with game x).

Well, it was a pun for the release of Fallout 3 in fall 2008. After the trailer, the text "Fallout 3" showed up, then "out 3" disappeared and was replaced with "2008" so it made out "Fall 2008"
