Motorcyles?

I think it'd be cool to fix up one of the motorcycles and ride it around the wasteland.

I had to do that in a Lara Croft game and I was terrible at it. Is it ok if I just walk?

How about a mutant/cyborg horse, to keep with the cowboy theme?

Wow, mutant horse would be absolutely amazing.

As for motorbikes...actually the whole lack of powered transportation makes very little sense. There are functioning vertibirds. Where are the wheeled vehicles? Obviously with the roads being what they are you'd need them to come in the all-terrain variety, but still. It's a big hole you have to ignore for the sake of a certain feel to the game world I suppose.

Some cars are actually, The one in FO2 you could buy was a Special Car i think.

Besides, Cars don't last as long as Vertibirds.

no, all cars are powered by nuclear power, (microfusion cells in the game, t2 energy weapon ammo) and only a few people could actually afford them because they were so ridiculously expensive, that is their canon explanation of why there are so few cars and why the ones that are around don't work, and also this is why all cars blow up like a fatman nuke.

need to see the easiest example? youtube search the fo1 intro video. there is a TV running pre-war advertisemants including an ad for the Chryslus "Corvega" at "ONLY" $199,999.00 :)

edit: the reason all cars went nuclear is because when petroleum supplies diminished to critical levels the militaries of the world hoarded the last of it. clearly that was a sound solution to the energy crisis.

There are military trucks all over the place, some of them even in decent condition. Being nuclear powered...... that would imply some variety of electric driveline. Shouldn't be that hard to get/keep one going, given the volume of energy cells available... Being six wheel drive (awfully similar to the current military duece and a half....), they would prove very capable transports, even with the current condition of the roads. After all, that's what they were designed for. Also, I am going to hazard a guess here, that they are FAR less complicated than a verti-bird...... yet NCR seems to have at least one available for use....... (gee, wonder where they got the ability to do that. :D)

My problem with Vehicles is a motorcycle would not allow you to sneak up on anyone, the distances involved are not that far like in FO1/2 between cities, and in the real Fallout World, the darn thing would get stolen all the time.

It's like the Horses in Oblivion, seemed like a good idea at first blush, but the gameplay was too gimped by using them. As you had to dismount to interact, fight, take loot, etc etc.

If by "once" you mean once a day then yes.

Im not bothered either way, probably wouldn't use it that much.

yep the engine svcks too much for vehicles to be any fun.

and onto the car thing - i believe the reason none are working is because the components needed to start the car and keep it running are well over 200 years old in most cases. the nuclear reactor is still going, and is infact quite dangerous.

in FO2 you have to get a fuel cell controller, but you also have to find a highwayman in acceptable condition. i'm sure the issue is that the electronics are all shot and require a massive amount of work that simply can't be done in the current FO world... microchip manufacturing, etc. even modern cars probably couldn't be replicated in the fallout world though.

but a good old mechanical-based engine would do the trick... if you could find a car from the 60s and 70s ;P.. just gotta make it run off something besides petrol.

then again, the brotherhood in tactics had a wide supply of hummers they supposedly got running themselves. so maybe in the next fallout we'll come across a warehouse full of operable cars or something. i imagine that if you could find such a facility that the cars would still be functional, even after so long, especially given that they are nuclear powered.

I would like the idea of being able to use an old military truck or being able to restore a junker to running condition. I wouldnt want it to move fast though. It would just be cool to cruise around the wasteland at about 30 Mph. It would be nice to be able to mount one of my light machine guns on the back as well.

There have been a number of times where I would like to have had faster movement. Usually I am hoofing it a really long distance and think, "is there a way I can turn on auto-run and go to the bathroom or something?". A cycle with a sidecar for your follower would be great. For convenience, they could be scattered around so you just take one when you want if the faction that owns it likes you. Respawn them all the time and despawn them to keep from cluttering up the world (like Farcry 2).

I posted this as an alternative to "fast travel". Fix up any vehicle ... get tires (why cycle would be easier) ... get oil for gear boxes ... scrap electronics's for ignition system. You have to hunt around for spare parts. Zoom .. zoom .. zoom ...

i think the biggest limiting factor is the world. if you had a highwayman in NV, the world would feel as small as it actually is. in FO2 the highwayman was useful because there is about 30 minutes of real life walking time between vault city and the boneyard, but with the highwayman, provided you drove it on the desert, you could get there in 15-20 seconds.

Vehicles = bad.

Would enemies ignore us? Would there be different combat mechanics? Would we be able to run our vehicles into Deathclaws in a reckless attempt to damage them? VATS from a motorcycle? No VATS from a motorcycle? Do we really need vehicle physics in a game that is this heavily scripted?

What about fuel? Would that be a concern only in hardcoe Mode, or would there be NO fuel requirements whatsoever? If it's a reactor-based fuel source, what happens when that Deathclaw cracks open that fuel source? Is the vehicle even susceptible to damage, or is it impervious?

Too. Many. Questions.

Vehicles in Fallout would be a big mistake and ultimately nobody would be happy with them.

I like cars and bikes in MadMax, but for FallOut I would only like this idea if it were some kind of DLC car wars thing where you rig up your vehicle and do battle against other factions vehicles...... not very FallOut ish I know but the games evolving anyway so why not I spose......

Well yes and no. We all run everywhere ... and we don't get tired. Try walking from the NCR Outpost to New Vegas, walking not running, and see how long it takes.

i mean, the NV world is incredibly small compared to FO2. The FO2 map is effin huge and the scale is even smaller.

if you had a car to traverse the mojave, it would feel too small. fast travel already kills that. if you could fast travel in fo1/2, the games would have been ruined entirely.

I wonder if there are issues in the engine with traveling by motorcycle -- my video quality seems to get choppy just running around if I take the Light Traveler perk, as the game (on Xbox) tries to keep up with my movement. But then again, if horses could move fast in Oblivion....
