I love Steam. I object to the forced patching policy though. Maybe if companies like Bethesda didn't release buggy patches it would be a non-issue, but such is reality.

Steam locked me out because my IP is in Japan. Not even allowed to play the game till Dec 8, even though I bought the worldwide release on NOV 15. This happened to PC users but not to those with consoles. Selective punishment. I can't even enjoy the DVD that I bought and paid for, or its patches or any other available content. My Skyrim experience is reduced to the forums.

Especially the fact that it stopped me loading Skyrim with an LAA patch, Seriously I'll decided what goes into my product that I purchased and not them.

So you're using a hack to play the game, even if it's actually a legit and useful one, and you can't be arsed to get the new hack that works with the Steam patch?

Is that right?

I think a fair bit of the steam hate comes from it being an app, that for many, serves no other purpose than to allow them to play their game.
Although it doesn't take up much, it does use system resources and takes up space on the HDD, to some people that is too much.

I personally don't mind Steam, I don't think it's evil, but would I have prefered Skyrim without Steam?...yes.
Though neither do I mind it being on Steam (and I was there when Steam was launched and experienced it's teething troubles).

@derari, read the Eula of most games/software. It's a license agreement. You don't actually own it, they're just granting you permission to use it. And generally can revoke that permission anytime for any reason. I'm just not thrilled with requiring steam bc what if Valve goes belly up? Then I've lost easily $2k+ with of games bc they require steam to run.

^ This

I hate using it, I don't like being forced to use it when I don't want to so I do anything I can to avoid using it.Especially the fact that it stopped me loading Skyrim with an LAA patch, Seriously I'll decided what goes into my product that I purchased and not them.

And ^ this.

In my case, I went to an actual store and bought the boxed game. So I believe that if paid for an offline game that has a DVD installer and a valid CD key, I should be the rightful owner of the game....But guess what, yeah, Steam removes that right of ownership and that's rubbish.

Unfortunately there's nothing we can do, well, the *only* thing we can do is play it offline, which is what I have been doing since 11.11.11.

Totally agree.

I bought it, I own it. I should be able to play it.

Any game I bought from overseas in the past I could just install and play, regardless of its local 'release date' If I wanted the local version, I'd wait for it, wouldn't I?. I never needed Steam for anything before. Now I need it to install this game and the only function it serves until Dec 8 is to block me from installing and playing the game. As my signature says, if it weren't for Steam, I'd be playing Skyrim right now. It has done nothing but deny me access to the product I paid for.

I dont get why people hate steam so much, its the best thing thats ever happend to me.

I like Steam for the things it does well - digital distribution (especially of old and/or indie games). And sales.

But there's plenty of parts that I don't like. And ones that I just don't care about (and therefore aren't worth the negatives.)

For example:
Auto-updates, some games is really enoying to get patches for'need to be member of an shady site to get an mirror for download'

Personally, I hate auto-update. I much prefer to have some measure of control over my patching (I don't, in general, play online multiplayer games that need to constantly be kept up to date in order to access servers). Perfect example of this - Skyrim auto-updated to 1.2 (even though I checked the "don't auto update!" box) and broke the game.

I can easy see what games my friends are playing, and when!
I don't do "social media", and I certainly have never liked the whole "big brother" aspect of having people constantly alerted to when I'm online/playing games. Again, I don't generally do multiplayer. And the MMOs I've played, I've played "solo" - none of my IRL friends play them, and I've no interest in joining groups of Random Morons for dungeon runs.

I dont have to have a lot of dvd's laying around.
Its easy to see what games i have on the list.

Never had any problems with these things. But, I'm organized. I've never destroyed or lost a disc, and I know where all my manuals/boxes/DVDs are. This is one of those "don't care" things.

What is this forced patching and connection poppyock?

If you don't want Steam to update anything, simply block the Steam client at the firewall. It will happily let you in assuming it is on a laptop off the net. When you are wanting to patch simply open the firewall and let it run.

And if all I'm doing is running Skyrim, that's fine. If I want to take advantage of any of the other good features of Steam (like sales, or "try this game for free weekend!" things) I have to go back online and have auto-updated screw up my installs.

It's a nice system for the things it does well. But the things it does badly...... :shakehead:

The other day I lost my internet connection... even though the game was in the computer I couldn't play it.

That's [censored] stupid.

But I don't hate steam, things like that are just annoying.

I would love to see your opinions on steam if you had to go for an extended period of time without internet. Then all the games you bought won`t be playable at all. Then you`ll rage about how much it svcks and why do we have to have it and why can`t I play my single player games without it.

I see people saying this none-sense EVERY time. You do realize there is something called Offline mod right?

Numerous times I've been able to play my stuff even with the internet gone for quite a while. Even Team Fortress 2. With bots.

How exactly is it nonsense? I haven`t altered any files to make it not use steam because I don`t know how. So If you run it in the stock format, if you got no internet you got no game. And I`m not sure if you are saying mode or mod. If you are referring to mode if you have no internet soon as you click a game it tries to log you into steam and you wont log in and you`ll get the connection error. I never heard of any mod that let you play games from steam without it runing. But if you know the way, let me know so if I ever lose my internet again I can still access the game I paid for.

You have to start offline mode while you're still connected to the internet. If you get an unexpected outage, steam will tell you to go online instead.

ROFL! Someone out there thinks origin was a good idea.

I think Bethesda is smart enough not to waste time and money to invent something that not only already exists, but they already use.

Are you sure this happened? I recently lost my connection and when i tried to connect I couldn't, so I chose to start in offline mode and played. I wasn't locked out of my game. I see a lot of people saying this happens to them, but it has never happened to anybody I know.

No don't be like EA. That is just bad.

Also how come my offline works right off the bat? I took it to class about month ago..starts just fine.

Unless your talking about the run the game one time while connected to internet thing, after first time set up that is.
