Muffle & Resist Poison (Disenchanting)

Hmm ... After trying for a very long time, I finally stumbled upon Glass Boots of Muffling without spending any perks on the Sneak tree. I guess it's just really really really really really really rare. Now I wonder if I can do the same with Resist Poison ... *Sighs*

Anyhow, I greatly appreciate the feedback I received, even if I did sound a little crazy at times. o.o ...

I can't find any random enchanted water breathing gear. With muffle I think I did the mannequin glitch to copy I believe the Nightingale boots or guild leader boots I'm not sure.

Jester's Boots have it, as to several other special set shoes / boots. I also found the Muffle enchantment as random dungeon loot. Not sure where - I had them for a while, and 're-discovered' them recently when I decided to work on enchanting stuff.

If you are still looking for water breathing, the lady blacksmith in windhelm has a necklace of it.
You got to have decent pickpocket to get it.

Waterbreathing gear is probably only bested in rarity by Muffle gear. I can confirm that it appears in a Blacksmith's inventory, albeit rarely. Ran into a couple of " of Waterbreathing when I was trying to get Boots of Muffling.

So far I have not been able to find any poison resistance gear from shops. Neither Necklace of Poison Resistance or Necklace of Poison Immunity. The funny thing is that Necklace of Disease Immunity appeared very often, sometimes even appearing in quantities of 3.

Has anyone here purchased Necklace of Poison Resistance/Immunity from a shop or has it been just random loot?

I messed around with the Speech tree and you were probably thinking of the "Merchant" perk (Can sell any type of item to any kind of merchant) which makes merchants sell a little bit of extra items that they normally wouldn't sell. In any case, I haven't had any luck with Necklace of Poison Resist/Immunity being sold.

I distinctly remember finding a 100% resist poison necklace at the Whiterun Merchant
I found a waterbreathing circlet at same merchant as well
And a remember buying a pair of orcish boots with muffle as well from the Whiterun smith.

I tried quite a bit at the Radiant Rainment and at the Bits in Pieces (Both in Solitude) and I had no luck. I figure that if the Radiant Rainment merchant is selling 3 Necklace of Disease Immunity at the same time that she would probably be the one to carry a Necklace of Poison Resist/Immunity at some point.

I might try the merchant at Whiterun. I'm wondering if it's a case of it "It won't appear after X level" or another case of EXTREME EXTREME EXTREME rarity.

Well, I lowered my level to level 5 and I tried looking for a Necklace of Poison Resistance. Within a few tries I found one. I have a theory. Now I may be wrong, but it seems like the Necklace of Disease Resistance/Immunity might be overwriting the Necklace of Poison Resistance/Immunity. In other words, if a Necklace of Disease Immunity can appear, then a Necklace of Poison Immunity cannot appear. Now I'm not sure if this applies with the Necklace of Disease Resistance making a Necklace of Poison Resistance not appear ...

However, it also did not make sense to have the trigger for "The Wolf Queen Awakened" be a level up, as you're inevitably locked out of that quest if you reach the level cap before completing "The Man Who Cried Wolf".

after my first play through (about 120+ hours) i dont ever recall seeing a random item with muffle or resist poison enchant.

i had to get these through the help command in the console

it just has to do with shortening your list of available options, which makes certain things appear more often. with the list i have given you already in this thread you can see each effect and at what level that effect starts appearing on merchants. as you gain levels you gain more available effects that can spawn on merchants. and since merchants have limited wares, that decreases your chances of getting the effect you want because if you have say 1 effect you want and the merchant only has 4 items that are randomly generated with effect affixes, but you are at a level where say 30 affixes are possible of appearing, you have a much lower chance of seeing the affix you want than if you were at that same merchant but an available amount of affixes is only 15 because of your level that doubles the chance of the affix you want to see appearing. this does not, by the very nature of random, guarantee you to find the affix you want. if you want to know why theres a very old comic and it goes something like this...

Bird: 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
Man: what is that?
Mathemetician: why, that's our random number generator!
Bird: 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
Man: how do you know it works?
Mathemetician: that's the problem with random, you can never really be sure.

There were even several times where several Disease Immunity necklaces appeared at the same time (3 Necklaces of Disease Immunity at one time).

it's coming from a misunderstanding of chance. saying that something has a 10% chance of occuring does not mean 1 out of 10 times you will get the desired result. i tried explaining this when explaining how random works but it's apparently not yet understood. chance is never a guarantee of something, flip a coin and theres a 50% chance it will land heads up. does this mean in 2 flips it will end up heads up once? no it does not, its just as possible that it would heads down both times. flip the coin 4 times, will it land up 2 of the times? maybe, but it could also land heads down every time, or 3 of the times. flip it 10,000 times, it could appear with a 46% appearance of heads. it could also appear with 0 heads. this is very unlikely but completely possible. go on for infinity coin flips. it might never actually land heads up. will it? probably not. but its completely possible it might.

just like resetting the merchant as many times as you like might never avail you the affix you wish to gain. that doesnt mean it can't. it just means you happen to have gotten really unlucky. chance is never a guarantee. you can still get the necklace at the level cap. the chance of you getting it is much lower as already discussed here as to why. which means it may take 1 try to find it, it may take 50 tries, it may take 200 tries. it may never even happen for you. but that doesnt mean it can't happen.

if i havent made the point clear by now i daresay i never will. but i can only hope this casts some illumination on the subject for you.

the reason i say this even after your saying you understand the concept of random but there is a difference between random and impossibility. yes this is true. but you are reaching your conclusion of it being impossible entirely because random hasnt worked for you yet. just because it hasnt worked for you yet does not lead to your conclusion of impossibility. this is simply an assertion based on a false premise. because the premise is wrong invariably the conclusion is wrong also. its a classic example of what scientists know as GIGO, garbage in, garbage out.

You don't seem to be understanding that I understand what you're stating and I understand random and chance. Believe me, I do. But I also understand impossibility. Is that something you understand? If it's impossible for something to happen it will not happen. Simple, no? In any case, I did extensive testing which has lead me to my current theory.

I theorize that the Necklaces of Disease or Poison resistance override each other. Let me paint a clearer picture.

* Necklace of Poison Resistance begins showing up at level 5.
* Necklace of Disease Resistance begins showing up at level 10.
* Necklace of Poison Immunity begins showing up at level 15.
* Necklace of Disease Immunity begins showing up at level 20.

While Necklace of Disease Resistance can show up, you will never see a Necklace of Poison Resistance. While a Necklace of Poison Immunity can show up, you will never see a Necklace of Disease Resistance. While a Necklace of Disease Immunity can show up, you will never see a Necklace of Poison Immunity.

It appears as though they're incorrectly overriding each other instead of just overriding their corresponding fields (I.e. Necklace of Disease Immunity overriding Necklace of Disease Resistance and Necklace of Poison Immunity overriding Necklace of Poison Resistance). I imagine this is a bug and not intended behavior, but knowing Bethesda I'm not quite sure.

What if random hasn't worked out for me yet because it's not based on random and rather just impossible? That's mainly the reason why I asked if anyone else has purchased a Necklace of Poison Immunity/Resistance while at the level cap. I doubt they have because it appears to be impossible. By impossible I mean that these particular items are coded in a way to make it so that they don't appear in a merchants inventory after certain other items are made available.

Surely I can't prove it without doing some reverse engineering considering that the Creation Kit is not released, but I use some common sense and some test results and I've come to this reasonable conclusion.

In all honesty, you don't think there's a chance that I could be right? :wink:

you could be right about there being a bug, its possible. but it needs more evidence than you have so far come up with. until enough evidence is presented it defaults into the established way of how things work.

Which I also addressed in a following post. In any case, I'm fairly certain that I'm right. However, I can't exactly prove it without some heavy reverse engineering. When dealing with things random, you can always claim it's random and someone is unlucky. It's quite easy to do that. However, I believe that I have come up with sufficient evidence considering the tools available to me.

There's always a margin of error, but I feel I've done sufficient tests and have come up with a reasonable conclusion. Short of the Creation Kit being released, I can't prove it 100 percent. But it's kind of a snow ball effect. Say there was a perk that stated you have 50 percent chance of staggering all but the largest foes. I then proceed to record results of getting 39 out of 100 staggering blows. There's a margin of error.

Someone can easily say that it's not 50 percent and they want more. Then we try 200 blows. 400 blows. 600 blows. 1000 blows. You won't ever be able to prove it definitively without going under the hood. I've proved as much as I can without going under the hood is what I'm trying to get at. I think you get the point in any case... o.o....
