Music : Top Albums of the year

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 7:45 am

You prefer it to the debut? I dunno, Helplessness Blues is definitely my album of the year, the only album that comes close is Trap Them's, but I still prefer the debut, which has that great ethereal quality to it that the new one doesn't seem to have to the same extent. Really don't like the free jazz bit at the end of The Shrine/An Argument. I know why they did it, but I don't like free jazz at the best of times, and it really doesn't fit with the rest of the album.

You know I felt the same the first time I heard itbut it grew on me.

And as for the debut, I think it surpassed it slightly. Both have a great unique sound. Maybe it's because I find Helplessness blues to be somewhat catchier, and yet more complicated. The self titled track is definitely my favorite next to Shrine.

I'm not sure how they're gonna top this though. They have their work cut out for sure.

I would have to say my top three are

Coldplay - Mylo Xyloto
I never really like Coldplay that much, but I really liked this album.

The Black Keys - El Camino
Just like Coldplay, I wasn't a huge fan of The Black Keys, but am really enjoying this album.

Justice - Audio, Video, Disco

This album was no "?", but it was still really good

Did you get the two disc version that came with the Sun Giant E.P? If not, try to track that down. English House, Mykonos and their version of False Knight on the Road (especially False Knight on the Road), are simply breathtaking.

Most Dissapointing Albums of 2011 :
2.Nightwish - Imaginaerum

o_O

Are you serious? This is my pick for Album of the year. It's absolutely mind blowing, and a huge improvement over their last album (which was already pretty good).

I personally cannot wait for Imaginaerum (the film) because if it's anything like this album then it's guaranteed to be one of the better, if not the best musical film of 2012.

Every review I've read agrees with me; the album is amazing. Metal Hammer even named it Album of the Year.

Actually, I have to agree with Wind, the new Tom Waits album is definitely one of the best albums this year, but I'm not sure if it's better than Imaginaerum.

Unfortunately, I don't keep up with music as much as I would like, but my two favorite albums of this year are:

Rise Against - Endgame
Five Finger Death Punch - American Capitalist

In alphabetical order:

Antediluvian - Through The Cervix Of Hawwah
Anubis Gate - Anubis Gate
Aosoth - III
Bestial Raids - Prime Evil Damnation
Blasphemophagher - The Ill Command Of The Absolute Chaos
Deceased - Surreal Overdose
Encoffination - O' Hell, Shine In Thy Whited Sepulchres
Eskhaton - Nihilgoety
Esoteric - Paragon Of Dissonance
Hades Archer - For The Diabolical Ages
Loss - Despond
Mitochondrion - Parasignosis
Negative Plane - Stained Glass Revelations
Nightbringer - Hierophany Of The Open Grave
Sabbat - Sabbatrinity
Septic Flesh - The Great Mass
Sonne Adam - Transformation
Taake - Noregs Vaapen
Vader - Welcome To The Morbid Reich

and hopefully there'll be releases from Embrace Of Thorns and Wrathprayer before the end of the year.

Also, I am very excited to hear that Ulcerate will be coming out with album number four sometime in 2012.

I'm not. I was rather disappointed with DoA - I think they needed to sit on those songs for a while longer and be more vicious with the editing. There's a lot of flab in that album.

4. Falling in Reverse: The Drug In Me Is You

Well I loved the atmosphere, it just grabbed me. I must admit, Everything Is Fire as a lot of memorable chaotic riffs and a great tone. But the atmosphere on The Destroyers of All is absolutely fantastic in my opinion, especially on the song - "Omens" - I really love that one.

And in my first post I did forget to make some honorary mentions to:

Amon Amarth with their release of Surtur Rising and Oakhelm with their release of Echtra.

I actually came out of the rap music related closet this year

Before that I was pretty much one of those typical "Durrr rap svckS!" people
(The secret is , you just gotta listen to it on a good car stereo or on over the ear headphones with good bass)

As far as Watch the Throne goes , I heard that Otis song with random wailing in the background of it off of that and was like oh hell no personally lol

I bought Carter IV by Lil Wayne , Trunk Muzik 0-60 & Radioactive by Yelawolf , like 1 song by Lil Boosie and plan to get Young Jeezys new album when it drops later this month

So I'm sort of new to being a fan of rap but thats what I like most in rap so far , Young Jeezy seems like the most consistently enjoyable guy in rap to me personally (Having gone over but not actually bought his previous albums)

I figure even still it won't break my top 10 of the year list , so I went ahead and had made this topic before that last album of the year comes out

I'm not made of money so I'm not going to like... buy retro-active albums I just start here and move foward with the times as far as my collection goes

Dude if you want a helluva rap album buy the new album "J. Cole: The Sideline Story". Not only the best rap album for 2011 but the best album of all albums of 2011, even 2010

Get it, you wont be dissapointed!

Agreed about the atmosphere - they've nailed a kinda DsO meets Incantation vibe. Don't get me wrong, I still think it's a good album, one of the better DM releases this year (in a stellar year). But EiF blew me away, and I was significantly less impressed by DoA. I think I would have preferred some tighter arrangements and songs which were a bit less bloated with too many sections and repetitions.

I've enjoyed a lot of the 2011 albums I've bought this year.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5F0QsjIflZw

+ Lots of stuff I got off Bandcamp by http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQpybN0SnHc, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pOQrpvrNeM, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vu7DgQvlaes, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ch9jV4abwS4, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlz4yN-KrmQ, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSHW_iLXTac, etc..

This guy knows what he's talking about. Probably because he's me.

Yeah dude , I am honestly dissapointed by Imaginaerum

Going down the list

1.Taikalaivvaikarmwoeffiej : Just some intro , don't care
2.Storytime : [censored]ing awesome
3.Ghost River : [censored]ing awesome
4.Slow , love , slow : What the heck? Its like a boring jazz song or something , I skip this one most of the time
5.I want my tears back : This one is good but not outstanding
6.Scaretale : This one is alright... the looney/whimsical sounding 2nd half of it takes points off imo
7.Arabesque : Instrumental interlude , don't care
8.Turn loose the mermaids : Eh , its just alright...
9.Rest Calm : Its just alright
10.The Crow , Owl , and Dove : Pretty good
11.Last ride of the day : Pretty [censored]ing awesome
12.Song of Myself : Its ok but the 5 minutes of TALKING at the end is dumb.
13.Imaginaerum : Instrumental mashup of the whole album outro , don't care.

I only legitimatley really enjoy 3 songs off it (Storytime , Ghost River , Last ride of the day)

Crow Owl Dove & I want my tears back I enjoy but to a lesser extent

The rest I couldn't care less about

If I were to do the same thing for Dark Passion Play it'd look like this

1.EFFING AWESOME!
2.EFFING AWESOME!
3.EFFING AWESOME!
4.EFFING AWESOME!
5.EFFING AWESOME!
6.EFFING AWESOME!
7.EFFING AWESOME!
8.EFFING AWESOME!
9.EFFING AWESOME!
10.EFFING AWESOME!
11.EFFING AWESOME!
12.EFFING AWESOME!
13.EFFING AWESOME!

So of course I'm dissapointed

Oh and you said Metal Hammer gave Imaginaerum Metal AOTY , my opinion would be Triviums "In Waves" for that award personally

Let England Shake - PJ Harvey

Strange Mercy - St. Vincent

a couple others but these are the top 2.

I'm such a critic follower I'm not even going to lie. But I can't help the music I enjoy.

Top 2:
Kendrick Lamar - Section80
Nujabes - Spiritual State

I bought a bunch of albums this year and I can't really say they were disappointing because I had low expectations, but those two albums really stood out as exceptional to me.

Thanks for the heads up. Will scope out

I think you were just spoiled by EiF. DoA was the first I heard from them and so I fell in love with it because I hadn't heard what they were capable of before. They're still miles ahead of most is what I'm saying.. Even if you found that album a let down

Imo anyway

My favourite album of 2011 was

Primordial - Redemption at the puritan's hand, the whole albums amazing but the 2 below are 2 examples of brilliance

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJYM_vbU3iE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzAFmfR8cog&feature=related

Worst album of the year was Metallica and Lou Reed - Lulu. It is one of the very worst things I have EVER heard

Most Dissapointing Albums of 2011 :
2.Nightwish - Imaginaerum

I found it to be ok. Still think they need a more powerful vocalist like Floor Jansen, Vibeke Stene, Kimberley Goss etc

Anyway like I said in a post in the metal thread I thought 2010 was a better year for album releases

I agree, definitely a great release for this year. Everything Is Fire does have some tight guitar work with some damn good drumming from Merat. Now that you mention the bloat-y-ness, I think that if tighter arrangements and a little bloat-y-ness were combined; it could make for a very interesting atmosphere. Maybe for album number four, they will mix up the atmosphere, bring you in for a very long haul of a song, and then the next comes close, chaotic, pummeling. Okay, I am rambling now. :P
