Music : Top Albums of the year

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 7:10 am

What are your top albums of the year? What albums dissapointed you the most?

My list

Top 10 albums of the Year
10.A Skylit Drive - Identity on Fire
9.Children of Bodom - Relentless , Reckless , Forever
8.The Human Abstract - Digital Veil
7.Evanescence - Evanescence
6.The Black Dahlia Murder - Ritual
5.Warbringer - Worlds Torn Asunder
4.Lady Gaga - Born This Way
3.Black Veil Brides - Set The World On Fire
2.Trivium - In Waves
1.Asking Alexandria - Reckless & Relentless

Honorary mentions/Runner Ups :
There For Tomorrow - The Verge
Mastodon - The Hunter
Kelly Clarkson - Stronger
Alesana - A place where the sun is silent
Megadeth - TH1RT3EN

Most Dissapointing Albums of 2011 :
5.Yelawolf - Radioactive
4.Machine Head - Unto The Locust
3.Protest The Hero - Scurrilous
2.Nightwish - Imaginaerum
1.Metallica/Lou Reed - Lulu

Random Rambling about some of my picks :
Spoiler
My picks were mostly based on my playcounts and consistency

COB , ASD , and THA came out very early in the year and had almost been forgotten... my computer had since been wiped out and playcounts erased.. but I do remember those having really high play counts and I did a quick skim through them one more time on iTunes to refresh my memory and they definatley do deserve to make the list. Even if now at the end of the year they are mostly forgotten.

Except Evanescence which I haven't played nearly as much as the other top 10 , but it is a newer one on the list... Amy Lees singing is so good it gives me chills... felt like I just had to put it on the list

There For Tomorrow amazes me , they make Pop-Rock without sounding stupid... they really work well together and actually play their instruments as good as you could ever find in a non progressive/non metal band. Really I wanted to put them on the list but my playcounts seem to suggest that despite how much they amaze me that I'm not as into it as I'd apparently like to think

Yes the legendary Megadeth only got an honorable mention by me , while 13 has some of their best material ever (Black Swan , Sudden Death , Public Enemy #1 , Never Dead) the rest of it is pretty "meh"

Mastodons "The Hunter" I actually just bought. I actually just got into them , they are really good but I think its too early for me to actually be ranking their album above stuff I listened to in its entirety like 50X over

Yelawolf makes #5 as most dissapointing because even though I'm EXTREMELY dissapointed... he is a rapper after all... can't expect alot from them... his previous Mixtape Trunk Muzik 0-60 was much better and way more consistent... Radioactive is 90% garbage unfortunately

Protest The Hero , HUGE fan of Kezia & Fortress.... but Scurrilous I did not even buy..... most of it was just lacking something... something I can't quite put my finger on.... but its definatley not even half as good as their previous albums... hopefully their next album will be a return to being awesome...

Machine Heads new album also severely paled in comparisson to their previous masterpiece "The Blackening" , they had big shoes to fill... and they couldn't do it... they raised the bar too high for their own selves with The Blackening

Nightwishs new album was a HUGE dissapointment , the previous one was incredible all the way through but the new one has like.... 3 good songs... like 1 or 2 more that are decent ... and the rest I can't even listen to without feeling like I'm forcing myself to

The Metallica thing with Lou Reed was possibly the worst crap I've ever heard

And yes , I'm ecclectic enough to have stuff like TBDM on the same list as Lady Gaga. Thats just how I roll :disguise:

We had a thread like this already, but oh well...

Endgame - Rise Against
A Place Where The Sun Is Silent - Alesana (I can't believe I found someone else that listens to them!)
Watch The Throne - Kanye West & Jay-Z

Edit: Just re-read the OP. You and I, sir, have a very similar taste in music.

Oh, and if we're allowed to ramble, I want in too. :celebration:

Spoiler

Endgame - It's what is to be expected of Rise Against. Pure awesomeness. Great music, and what makes it great for me is the message behind each and every song. It has a deep meaning that's relevant in today's world on a scale larger than just "she doesn't love me back, oh nooo". Tracks like "Make It Stop" and "Help Is On The Way" truly spark a will to change things; for me at least.

A Place Where The Sun Is Silent - Alesana definitely matured as a band on this album. Their previous tracks, while catchy, where incredibly messy. Songs like "This Conversation Is Over" and "Apology" almost sounded like you were playing two different songs at once. They realized that the lead vocalist can't really scream to save his life, so they shut him up and let the backup vocalist take care of that. In addition to the maturity, the album has a really cool medieval/gothic feel to it. Tracks like "The Temptress" even feature excerpts of poetry to help carve out the imagery for you. They also use some more non-conventional, and orchestral instruments, that are somewhat reminiscent of Nightwish.

Watch The Throne - Both these artists are great individually, and together, I thought they did really well. I can't actually go into too much detail, or even name tracks for that matter, because I think it would be against forum rules, but all I'll say is, I think it was a great team effort, and a good mesh between relatively modern, and relatively classic hip hop. Each of them brought what made them famous individually to the table.

Watch The Throne - Kanye West & Jay-Z

Its probably the worst Kanye West album and some of the worst songs i've ever heard from both of them. They made a couple good songs together...none of which are on that album.

I actually came out of the rap music related closet this year

Before that I was pretty much one of those typical "Durrr rap svckS!" people
(The secret is , you just gotta listen to it on a good car stereo or on over the ear headphones with good bass)

As far as Watch the Throne goes , I heard that Otis song with random wailing in the background of it off of that and was like oh hell no personally lol

I bought Carter IV by Lil Wayne , Trunk Muzik 0-60 & Radioactive by Yelawolf , like 1 song by Lil Boosie and plan to get Young Jeezys new album when it drops later this month

So I'm sort of new to being a fan of rap but thats what I like most in rap so far , Young Jeezy seems like the most consistently enjoyable guy in rap to me personally (Having gone over but not actually bought his previous albums)

I figure even still it won't break my top 10 of the year list , so I went ahead and had made this topic before that last album of the year comes out

I'm not made of money so I'm not going to like... buy retro-active albums I just start here and move foward with the times as far as my collection goes

Ladytron's "Gravity The Seducer" for me: nice to see they paired their terrible band name with a terrible album name. I haven't acquired enough music this year to have a top 10 best, but even if I had, I'm fairly confident that this would still be at or near the top.

I kinda feel bad for the seemingly many people who just can't seem to find any/enough new music they enjoy

For me I gotta have something new & different to listen to all the time , I can't just keep listening to the same stuff forever even if it is really really good stuff.... if there was to me no good new music and I already covered all the old that I liked I'd be one miserable person :sadvaultboy:

Sometimes I wonder though , I think I'm just obsessed with music.... because I buy like an album or two per week and I'm a drummer and all of that... I think I'm just obsessed.. maybe people who don't find much aren't obsessed enough to be trying to? IDK

I thought it was kind of strange that even the guy who likes Alesana & Kanye West (Like if you looked up Modern Music in a dictionary , they would be pictured under it) only listed like 3 things from the WHOOOLLE year :cryvaultboy:

I wouldn't feel too bad for the likes of me: I still have nearly 1,000 albums to listen to (yes, I paid for them all, before anyone asks!) so it's not like I'm short of stuff. I just don't listen to the radio or watch much TV at present so I'm a bit out of touch with the groovy new things that are happening at the moment. Still, not as much as Q magazine who still think U2 are where all the action is.

Oh cool , that seems fine then

Its like ... as long as an individual doesn't already know the material its new to them.... Elvis is technically as new to a 4 year old as Lady Gaga is right? So yeah , as long as people who can't see the good in the actually new are exploring through technically old stuff thats technically new to them and enjoying music then its all good :celebration:

BTW : Nearly 1,000 paid for albums , WOW thats so crazy... I guess you're obsessed too XD... more than I am even lol

True: I've been just as excited about stuff that's older than I am as I am about the latest and greatest stuff that's appearing in the charts. Thinking of your example, I hadn't even heard of Elvis until he died (I was about 10, I think) and was wondering why this strange guy was suddenly all over the newspapers.

Well it is around 30 years' worth! Though I guess that's still an album every week or two on average, which I guess sounds about right.

Oh no, I listen to (and have) a lot of music, just not a lot of it is from this year. I don't really care what year the album came out if it's good, because if I haven't heard it before, it's still new to me. Also, whatever else I have from this year like:

Neighborhoods - Blink 182
Evanescence - Evanescence
Set The World On Fire - BVB

Just didn't cut it for me. I like songs from pretty much all the albums you listed as your favorites, but the ones I listed where the only ones in which I liked almost every (if not every) song.

Oh ok , I actually have all 3 of those albums too

The BVB one I like literally every song on of course some more than others though , Evanescence .. Amy Lees singing is so good it gives me chills , and The Blink 182 one is like 1st half of the CD is pretty great 2nd half is decent

Here are my picks. Anyone agree?

Twin Sister - In Heaven (This one's definitely my favorite! I would recommend it to absolutely anyone!)
Goblin - Tyler, The Creator
Colours - Nadia Oh
Olivia Tremor Control - Black Foliage (reissue)

Many of the other albums I've bought this year came out in 2010 or before, but these four are definite highlights from 2011! :)

In no order:
  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3b8zpkyT-As - Feminist hardcoe punk to shout '[censored] you Cameron' to.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwXGfNwORvY - Gritty post-sludge mixed with psychedelic elements. Like sitting in a frozen swamp wearing a Black Sabbath shirt.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NXBTkgvltE - Soulful post-hardcoe to nod your head to feeling wistful.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0E6Bpoetzgs - Oddly catchy death metal/punk. Music for punching strangers to.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0sg6UrQjC4 - Beautifully pretentious post-rock/metal.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TjY54LKTbQ - In a similar vein to Trap Them, if slightly inferior, 'God Is War' basically does the same. Destroy [censored] to this, people.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAihDAJX8Ow - Mastodon go pop. People freak out. Album turns out to be awesome. Life goes on.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyP0DACgdgc - Absolutely beautiful indie folk. I can never be arsed/not able to actually order these things, but this would be my number 1 album this year.

Honourable mentions: Amon Amarth - Surtur Rising, Skindred - Union Black

Still need to get (that I can think of):

Coliseum - Parasites.

1. Tom Waits - Bad As Me
2. Hades Archer - For The Diabolical Age
3.Hank III - Ghost to a Ghost/Guttertown(only for the Guttertown side, I wasn't impressed with Ghost to a Ghost)
4. *Shels - Plains of the Purple Buffalo
5. Light Bearer - Lapsus
6. Tombs - Path of Totality
7. Graveyard - Hisingen Blues
8.King Creosote & Jon Hopkins - Diamond Mine
9. Tombs - Path of Totality
10. Ash Borer - Ash Borer
Honorable mentions:

Jesu - Ascension(Good but his past material is far better and I can't bring myself to put it on the list)

40 Watt Sun - The Inside Room

Necros Christos - Doom of the Occult

Tartar Lamb - Polyimage of Known Exits

Asva - Presences of Absences

Primordial - Redemption at the Puritans Hand

So Hideous, My Love... - To Clasp a Fallen Wish with Broken Fingers

Corvorum - The Journey

Those are the 3 big honorable mentions, the ones I listened to countless times but didn't allow myself to add for various reasons.

The fact that that act is named Zechs Marquise alone made me give a listen (never mind that Omar Rodríguez-López is a part of it).

Mhmm. Those Poor Bastards are one of my favorite groups at this point. Lonesome Wyatt's solo work is great too, once my copy of Heartsick gets here it may end up on my list.

Best album I've quite simply ever heard. Everything just comes together into such great music. Havn't heard something this good since early Genesis.
