If I'm not mistaken, Illia's bug is fixed when she becomes your steward

You are mistaken.

I'm gonna throw in another vote for Illia.
Illia is out because I cannot get her to follow me. :(
And I think making her a follower with the console only works until you load a save, because her relationship rank is supposedly not permanently saved.

i absolutely love Golldir,so much so that the only reason that i didn't choose him,was i didn't want him dieing protecting my house, lol.my illia got infected with the glitch to begin with, because i was going to choose her and found out about the glitch the hard way,so i chose Eola to pair with Valdamir.so are we down to Roggi,Golldir and Illia ?
I have Golldir as a follower atm (got his 2 notes for my collection :P), and I am giving him some nice gear, so we'll see how he goes. He's not bad looking, but if he doesn't have much of a personality, or he isn't an effective fighter then it will be Erik - who has both.

I like Roggi a lot, but at least he has a home of sorts and is in a place where I get to see him in the game. With Erik I hardly ever visit Rorikstead, and I think Erik is an NPC who deserves to progress from sitting in his father's inn waiting for someone to hire him (and I use Marcurio as my regular follower).
And with Golldir, he's stuck in a tomb, so I think he would also benefit from a change of scenery. So long as my Lakeview Steward doesn't die, I don't really care about defending the place that much since it's not my home in the game.

Wow, just figured something out about Golldir, posted it in a different thread.
I can't find where you posted whatever it is - so please tell! :P

Also Update: Uthgerd still has no shoes, no matter what I do. :P I guess because she's not a spouse and I cannot sell them to her.

This is what I posted:

One thing I have noticed about Golldir recently, is that he is only in his bed at night about every 3 or 4 days. I didn't think much of it the first few times I noticed, but my character finished smithing him some new armor rather late one night, and I couldn't find him. Next morning, he still isn't there. Now Gregor is gone every now and then, but not often, Golldir is gone more and more. If I wait like 12 hours or so, he shows up. This caught my notice just this past week playing, but I didn't really think much of it. After all, Lydia never used her d@mn bed either!

So, I was just playing, coming back towards Whiterun from Sleeping Tree Camp area, when I see a familiar figure up the road ahead. Yep, Golldir, and almost to the Meadery, I swear! Steward dialog intact, so no issue there. I know aussie was saying Gregor was going to the meadery, but I just thought that was part of her character's story. Apparently not, which is probably where Gregor is going too! What is the deal with this? My character gets back to HH, no Golldir, no Gregor in sight of the house, Vorstag was with my character, and Sophie was playing outside all alone! The horse would have been the only one to defend her!!

Golldir is on notice....I can get another steward.

He is an excellent fighter by the way, though I upgraded him to vastly improved steel armor and an ebony frost enchanted war ax. He has good fighter perks if you check his profile. I also have had him follow me a couple of times.

Edit: not a lot of personality....

Aye, I was hoping I could put everyone in the same uniform of either Wolf Armor or Vampire Armor (Vilkas looked good in the dark coloured male Vampire Armor :hubbahubba: ), but like followers they all went back to their default gear. At least I gave them matching Dragonbone weapons, except for Rayya who has Scimitars. I reverse pick pocketed Dragonbone daggers onto the Bards, although the damned carriage drivers seem to reset the weapons I gave them when the house resets, grrrrr.
Golldir is a beast with a Dragonbone Bow and arrows. I wanted to check his combat and stood back and let him fight some enemies, and he one-shot every bandit he fought. I also didn't realise until now that followers will use bows you give them - something must have gotten fixed but I never noticed because I've always had Marcurio as a follower.

Another thing Golldir helped me out with was he had his own torch, which prompted me to give all of my stewards and houscarls torches. It looks more homey arriving in the evening when Gregor is patrolling with a torch now.

But anyhow, I took both Golldir and Erik to Lakeview and Erik won me over by spontaneously asking me if he could become Steward. None of the other NPCs I've taken to the houses have ever done this, so he is now the master of Lakeview. Thanks for suggesting him, ak5434.

no problem,i hope he doesnt glitch on you like some have said he has done, and Lydia got my steward job in the Pale by actually asking for it,and from your description i may start handing out torches, but be careful handing out bows, they may use them but(in my case anyhow) when you re-leave them from service the hunting bows re spawn in their inventory,Mjoll became over encumbered because of this, and i had to take my save to pc to clear it up,i think you play on pc anyway so this might not be a problem

Do not waste any weapons on the carriage drivers, they do not fight and are not killable. What followers I tested always used a better bow if you gave them one, some will also use crossbows, although a couple I think preferred normal bows.

im not sure that they are unkillable,i had this weird glitch thing happen, where in my active effects i was a vampire and getting the "your blood is boiling" updates and couldn't get the dialogue with Falion or inn keeper so i went home to Aela to become a werewolf again,i was for a short time both i guess,so i thought hey wolf out and maybe that would cure my vampirsm,so i did right out in front of my house, and the carriage driver must have freaked out and Cicero somehow killed him.The whole thing was crazy and i am pretty sure i didn't dream it ,lol.

I reverse pick pocketed Legendary, enchanted axes onto all the regular carriage drivers in my game after I saw the carriage driver at Riften get down and fight in a skirmish. I also bought all the homestead carriages thinking the drivers would be extra defence. Oh well. Maybe I should recruit more horses like someone on the forums did.

Dogs are good defenders, get one of the children to adopt a dog, then ask him to wait out near the animal pen.

That Lakeview carriage driver sees a lot of action, especially Braggen's one, no one ever attacks him, he even ignores legendary dragons attacking straight through him. Once I wondered who that strange person was wandering around, it was the carriage driver, I had never before actually seen him get down from the carriage, did not recognise him without the carriage.

I'm not interested in adopting kids, and I am reluctant to use dogs for combat. :P My dog lives in Honeyside, and now that I've gotten rid of Iona he officially has her bed that she never slept in (as she was too busy sitting and staring at my bed).

I think the time I saw the guy join the fight at Riften, it was because he'd been hit with something.

I think the Hearthfire-home carriage drivers are programmed differently from the city carriage drivers. I frequently experience attacks of some nature just outside of Riften's main gate and in my experiences, the Riften carriage driver will always go on the attack if it's a vampire or a frostbite spider or some other creature.

And the Hearthfire carriage drivers must reset in some way. The only one that still has the Legendary weapon I gave him is the Heljarchen one where I visit often, and hasn't been reset.

To try and help with you shoe problem if you add a 1 after the the equip console id it should make the keep it permanent, so like equipitem 1234 1 and they'll keep it on. I use it to give modded clothing and armor to people I deem worthy/in need of it.

First I thought I would award Stewardship to Lydia, but then I remember how annoying she is. So, I finally got Jordis, the Shield Maiden out of the Solitude House. She has always treated me well and never complained (and never left the house for that matter). So, now I have a Steward (with dragonscale armor I might add), a housecarl and my strong husband Vorstag protecting Heljarchen.

Illia is a steward for Lakeview on my other character.

Otherwise, I just use the Housecarls that are assigned to me. But now, seeing how they can be added protection, I will chose a steward in addition to my housecarl! Hjerim and Vlindrel Hall both have some burly guys, who make excellent stewards.

Oh, I've never tried this, thanks. Me looking for ways to get NPCs to permanently equip better gear through console commands is why they are shoeless in the first place. :P

I was so happy when I finally had a way to get Iona out of Honeyside. Lydia had a nasty way of constantly saying "Stupid dog" to my dog in Breezehome, so she went to Boethia. But Iona never said or did anything I could find fault with, I just didn't want her crowding out such a small house. To me, the best thing about Hearthfire is that I get to send Iona away to live happily ever after in a big house with Valdimar. :D

I think the Markarth Housecarl, Argis, cannot become a steward (probably because Popeye didn't come back to record more dialogue).

If you're on the PC and using console commands you can just create a (very) easy mod which changes the default gear of any character to whatever you want.

I agree about the torch, but he sometimes carries it in the house! (and sometimes carries an invisible torch in the house too) LOL

Yea, I noticed that yesterday, about Argis. I was looking for my 3rd Steward as well, for my Lakeview Manor. So, I decided to get Mercurio, but he bugged out. He became my steward, but then had no Home improvement dialogue options. Then I thought to get Roggi, but he had no options to follow me. LOL I haven't yet met Illia on my main character, who did EVERYTHING already, but nope, not meet Illia LOL

So, I was like forget this and I went and got Vilka's. He finally worked out.

OMG Now that I got Dawnguard, I forgot about the Legendary Dragons! Maybe I should just move my family to Solitude hahaha

I just use target the NPC, and use showinventory to get the item codes. Then I use the command equipitem 1 (the 1 just means it can't be removed).

I didn't really want to change it, just find out how. :P My preference is to generally not change the appearance of the game very much and to use in game methods first (reverse pick pocket), then console commands and then if there's no alternative I'll mod something. With Dawnguard I wanted town NPCs to be well armed against the Vampire attacks so I reverse pick pocketed weapons into their inventories. It would have been possible to make them all essential or mod them out with huge health and amazing gear, but that would be no fun, and doesn't give my character anything to do. :P

I am not too worried that all of my 'staff' didn't end up wearing the matching wolf/Vampire armor I gave them, and I have been using the Perfect Touch perk to pick pocket some of their default gear while they sleep - going and improving and enchanting it and then reverse pick pocketing it back. They seem to be wearing the improved armor, and since I don't use them as followers I don't think it worries me if their default gear gets doubled up on (so far it hasn't), so long as it's the improved gear that they wear. I tested this on a Companion many months ago, and it is still working the way I wanted it to, but just have to see if the Stewards/Housecarls are different. So far the equipitem 1 command is working to make the 2 NPCs keep wearing their new boots.

I agree about the torch, but he sometimes carries it in the house! (and sometimes carries an invisible torch in the house too) LOL
Great, something else to look forward to. :P

With Hirelings becoming Stewards I think they start out not offering the Steward options, but if you travel away and come back again, or allow some time to pass they will have the options. Erik was like this for me as well, but he turned out fine.
I did Illia's quest, but couldn't remember having had her for a follower (if I did it was just because I wanted to see if she would become a follower), yet she didn't have follower options for me when I went back to see if she would be a Steward. She is bugged with a resetting relationship rank, and so even if you find her, she still may not be able to be your Steward.

One of my other characters had Illia as a companion as I started to build the home. She then remarked that such a fine manor needs a Steward. I agreed that she should be my steward and she immediately turned into the steward as soon as she left my services. She was also running around in her underwear, since I had her wearing some light armor LOL

I was like woman, put on your blue robe! hahaha I was able to fix her though via console. She is now wearing a Master Robe of Destruction. :)

Oh yea, I will never again fast travel to my current family home (Lakeview Manor) :D Travel to Pinewatch and walk the rest. :D
