New GPU card for Skyrim

If you want to save $, consider the GTX460.

That's the one I've been looking into that model as well. There are GTX460s on newegg for $150-170, depending on the maker, factory OC, and warranty. The 560 is a bit better, but it'll be obsolescent not too much longer after the 460 is, so I can't justify the price difference.

Right now I have a GT220, which is clearly outclassed by the current middle range graphic cards.

However, I played The Witcher 2 twice through on medium-low settings (medium most of the game, lower on the Kayran and "Ghost Battlefield" parts) without too much trouble (was sluggish in parts) with the GT220. And both times were prior to the 2.0 patch. TW2 still looked better than anything I'd ever seen, even with this old card.

The (minimum) recommendations for both Skyrim and Witcher 2 are very close, so I figure I can run Skyrim at least a smidge above "lowest" at least. Maybe a little more than a smidge, given the differences in the two games' development philosophy (open vs. narrower; play perspective; high diversity vs. high detail; console-driven vs. pc-driven design) seem to me to mean the Witcher 2 may be more demanding in terms of hardware.

So while I'll be looking to upgrade very soon, I'm not terribly worried about the requirements. I'm not an overclockin' GPU whiz, so YMMV and opinions are like uh... mudcrabs.

Edit:
My current system:
CPU 9150e Quad Core (1.8 Ghz)
GPU GT 220 1GB
OS VISTA 64
RAM 4GB

The GTX 560 ti is fantastic, and as someone else mentioned, it is the most efficient Fermi based card for price to performance and power consumption.

If you can afford it, I wouldnt recommend getting the non ti or the GTX 460s, as these are basically crippled GTX 560 tis (336 stream shaders instead of the full 384 of the G114 architecture).

From ATI, I'd go for either the 6870, or 6950, but back when I got my GTX 560 tis, the 6870 was £180, GTX 56 ti £199, and 6950 £240, hence the GTX 560 ti was priced very attractively at first.

Currently ATI prices have fallen a bit on those two cards, but GTX 560 tis are still the same price making them less attractive, but they are still very solid cards.

Doesn't detract from them being solid cards. A GTX 560 is only 10% slower than a "Ti" and you can easily make it up overclocking (I did). There are many cards over the years that fall into this category:

GTX 580 and GTX 570
GTX 480 and GTX 470
HD 6970 and HD 6950
HD 6870 and HD 6850
HD 5870 and HD 5850
GTX 285 and GTX 275
GTX 280 and GTX 260

Lots of cards have a high end "full" model and a second model who's chips weren't able to pass those standards. Again, doesn't make them bad cards and often you can make up the deficit by overclocking and save the money. I've benchmarked my card and its a little faster than a stock GTX 560 Ti now.
