New Patch causes near-immediate crashes

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 1:04 pm

It isnt necessarily Bethesdas mistake but most likely one of your mods. You probably use alot im guessing? It IS left to the gaminng community to solve since its the gaming community that makes the mods.
Bethesda isnt responsible for them in any way. Going through mods to determine what is causing crashes well thats the nature of the beast. I know what that is and its a pain in the ass. Only way to protect against it
is to keep steam from updating your game.

When I quoted "I like berner Have tried every fix I can find which have improved the crash problem slightly, I no longer use autosave & just use manual saves & quicksaves which also improves the crash problem slightly'"

I was talking about a completely unmodded game, so you cannot blame modders for that.

Have you tried a clean windows boot?
clean boot link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Make sure to verify that no third party programs are loaded when u reboot. Use the task manager. ALso go back into msconfig and check the non-ms services. They should all be disabled or in the stopped state.
Some services may not allow you to disable them like that. You will have to go into the software itself and disable the startup stuff there. Zonealarm does that. You have to go into the properties and uncheck zonealarm at startup.

thanks alot man, it's up and running now

Seems to be happening to everybody, I have no mods at all installed and it crashes when I try to fast travel from, leave, or enter Camp Macaren Terminal building. So I'm pretty much stuck in Camp Macarren punching 10 of spades until this bug can be addressed to. Ah well.

I'm affected by this too. Wow, It's vanilla launch day all over again. boo

p.s. I love how the very first line in the patch notes says "This update contains optimizations and stability improvements" Irony at It's best.

I would just take it for granted that with a new patch, I will need to remove all my mods and start a new game, adding back a mod at a time that I have verified are ok post-patch. The patch has changed the main FalloutNV.esm. All mods are based of this file, so of course there are going to be problems, and problems with an old save game.

Along with this I'd add: back up save games etc. and uninstall the game then re-install. I don't always trust Steam's updating process to be...not flawed. It seems to have worked for me this time but the last two patches I had to reinstall the game before a few things resolved (and that was with no to very few mods).

I was getting an instant crash when the launcher started.

Going to the FNV directory and manually setting WinXP-SP3 compatibility mode for "FalloutNV.exe" and "FalloutNVLauncher.exe" fixed this instant crash.

Bloody Hell now I've got to find out which mods causing the crash when trying to enter the prospector saloon.

Bethesda really know how to F*** things up. :banghead:

I have this exact same problem(Prospector Saloon crash). After re-installing New Vegas and deleting all mods then loading them back up again one by one,i found that the War Never Changes mod was causing my crash! Was wondering if you have this mod installed?

They aren't responsible for mods, which seem to be responsible for most people in this thread's problems. The patch improved stability and fps hugely. There are still problems they haven't yet fixed, but it was a huge step forward.

If you are going to use mods great, but expect problems to occour when patches happen. They can't account for thousands of mods not breaking everytime they try and improve the game, that's your problem.

Yes I did have War Never Changes installed, but quite why that should affect entry to the prospector I have no Idea, as with creatures Xiii affecting entry into doc mitchell's house when neither of them change anything in those cells.

It looks as if everyone is going to have to start from the beginning again, as update 1.3 seems to affect every old save wether mods are installed or not.
I've just been running a test from a new start & it appears to have improved stability, I have played it for nearly 2 hours before it crashed & I was moving to locations where I knew the old versions would crash every time.

This proves to me that not enough testing was done before release, & has caused great anymosity from the gamers, & caused a great deal of extra work for the modders ( who do a great job of improving game play & are far more responsive to feedback than game developers have ever been)

It also appears that the bug that prevented you from starting "I fought the law" after eliminating the powder gangers in goodsprings has been fixed, as I was half way through when the game crashed.

I have also started again and not had a crash at all until i put this mod on. I added my favourite mods on one by one and played for a while and still no crashes until i enabled War Never Changes. I too don't know why this causes the crash but i have tried 10 or 12 times with this mod turning it on and off and everytime i get the crash!
I have posted a similar question on the Nexus comments page for this mod to see if they can shed any light on this.

I'Ve strarted a topic on Nexus where you can post either Mods that now cause problems or those found to still work ok with update 1.3

http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/topic/374751-update-13-mod-compatability/

I look forward to your input

As I have written on page 1.. I have tried everything.. that includes whitout mods. clean install and no mods. When I buy a game I expect it to be playable at first Install, but it did not happen with this game. I have only experienced crashes and hang ups. last time experienced such problems were with Fallout 3 but I managed to find a solution that time. A patch that actually fixed the game.

With this new patch the geck wont even work.. you say that with the new patch there is a huge leap forward in problem fixes... I see a three steps back. The whole Piont to a patch is to correct errors whitin the game, well?
And don't you dare to say that its our (the modders) own fault the game is full of glitches and errors, when we try to play the game whitout mods and experience total crash and hangups.

All I can say is that why didn't they learn from fallout 3 that theyre engine is to fragile for this.

I apologize if I seem to be rude and cross, but please understand me that all I (consumer) want is to play the game without expecting that the game will crash any moment.

Well said Berner I was sending in complaints within a day of starting to play new vegas, well before I even thought about installing any mods. I personally never had any problems playing FO3 but I did not get it until all the DLC's were out, though I do now as FO3 does not like quad core cpu's, have taken to playing it on my dual core laptop, it does crash now & then but only after a few hours of play.
This is the only game in over 30 years of game play that I have felt the need to complain.

Do they plan on fixing this? I can't go more than 10 seconds without the game crashing. The game worked fine until the new update, now it's totally unplayable. I'm pretty sure that I don't have any "mods" or whatever that is either. I reinstalled the game last night, and it still doesn't work. This is "teh booshkie". Don't they test for stuff like this?

If your using saves from before the update, this is possibly the cause, I've read quite a few posts that are having the same problems with old saves, If you can do a quicksave (F5) before it crashes this might help.
Otherwise it looks like having to start a new game. I've played from a new start for about 8 hours or so & the game has only crashed twice & I'm going to location where I know the game used to crash before the update.
