Next Bethesda Game...

Post » Sat Dec 17, 2011 4:50 am

I have been reading the posts on this forum lately. Beyond the general consensus that people are unhappy/disappointed with the game and its apparent lack of content and compelling game play, people have lost confidence in Bethesda as a company and and appear to no longer have consumer confidence in their product. Without reading between the lines, it appears that this has happened to Bethie by their own doing. I mean, there have been posts which outright accuse the company of lying, baiting and switching, and even misrepresenting Skyrim. I wonder has this sentiment hurt Bethesda in any way and furthermore will the result of this be seen in coming titles in the future near and far? For example, based on my last experience in FONV and Skyrim, it is doubtful that I will purchase the next installment of Fallout. Does anyone else feel this way about the games to come out next from Bethesda?

If it is a Fallout or TES game, yes I will buy it.

Something else, well it depends if I'm interested or not.

Vocal minority syndrome, the happy players are the ones playing it.

short answer: Yes

long answer: Yyyyeeeessss

Seriously like the guy above said, the only people on the forums whining are the minority who don't like it. Ask the majority who do like it.....dang you can't, we're having too much fun playing : )

Yeah I'd buy it no questions asked. I buy a lot of games though, so perhaps that doesn't say much. By mistake I even pre-ordered Skyrim twice, and ended up giving it to a mate I play EVE online with, he was mighty happy and play the game as much as I do so I was well pleased to have given it to him, and have him enjoy it as much as he does.

Yes. Not at release though, and I'm never buying one of their games for PS3 again.

If you go by internet forums, no one ever should have bought a sequel to anything.

I don't know if I will. Unlike other games I didn't pre-order Skyrim and only bought it later because others were gushing about it, even though I suspected the response was largely the initial euphoria at the release of a highly marketed game. Skyrim was sorta fun but also a big let down in many respects. Can't say that I entered with high expectations so it wasn't too bad... most of it was something I saw coming given the direction of TES so far and the design philosophy espoused by its more prominent creators. It seems like too much is lost with each sequel and I don't have much to look forward to.

Forums are generally places where people voice complaints and things like that.

Of course it will look like most people dislike the game or have issues with it.

The fact is this here is maybe 10% of the entire customer base that bought the game talking.

TBH my only complaint is consolization.

If the next Bethesda game is still a consolized POS(UI, engine, animation, graphics, etc) then I definitely won't buy it.

But if it's not, then I'm fine with it. But I probably won't buy it on launch anyway.

I certainly will be.

That aside the game has sold great, and is continuing to sell great. Unless figures emerge to suggest a the vast majority of the people who have bought the game are bitterly disappointed and have signed, in blood, their commitment to never buying another Bethesda game then there is no reason to believe the next Bethesda game wont sell as well.

If you look at these forums you don't have a untied front of thousands of angry players. In fact of extremely active posters you probably don't even have 1000 and they argue. A lot. And if you went by polls (which you shouldn't, because internet polls are about as accurate sometimes as "a friend of a friend said...") here they often seem to be more in favor of the game than against it.

Vocal minority

As much as I despise that term, that is likely what it is.

I have noticed since I started playing on 11-11-11, that Skyrim is possibly Bethesda's most stable release yet (I said release, I said nothing about patches...which totally blow).

Having unrealistic expectations on what will be included with games upon release, as well as believing everything you hear pre release from Todd an co. will only set you up for disappointment later...anyone remember how they said there will be much love for the lefties...and then we never got it? or that on pc the graphics will melt your face off...and then found out they were downright horrible? Don't expect much and will be much happier.

I'll still buy Beth games, but after Todd's claims about Radiant AI in Oblivion and now his talk of there being 5 massive cities (come on now, really?) I'll be much more dubious and hesitant, not ready to lap up anything the PR will tell me.

I'll buy unless it's single-player with a mandatory on-line requirement or multi-player

My relation to Bethesda is worse than before Skyrim, mostly because of Todd's lies, and of my disappointment at the lack of different quest outcomes and so on. But of course, I'll still buy their games since no other company makes these kinds of games. They're still the best! :D

I'll only stop buying TES games if they do one of the following:

- Remove first-person POV
- Get rid of the RPG elements completely
- Make the gameworld very linear
- Make a set or semi-set player-character, with a voice
- Make the game too cinematic

I'm hoping for Fallout 4.

This so much.
Just not a streamlined game please, I like "spreadsheety".
And also maybe not a UI designed by the Gnome 3 team.

Heh, you need to look in those threads to see there really isn't a general consensus on anything. All that could be said is on the number of threads made (filter trolls who make an account and a single topic), and even that is less then clear as there are positive threads but they don't always generate the same heat from people fiercely debating/arguing in a complaints thread, so they don't stick around.

The real story is here:

http://store.steampowered.com/stats/

Oh, and to comment on some of the other posts, never ever believe pregame hype and marketing speak. The gaming industry has become so massive that it's exactly like hollywood now, so you have flashy people in suits who don't even play games telling you how great their game is. Game studio PR people will always embellish things or even tell outright lies. Tone down your expectations or better yet, stay away from previews and E3 interviews and the like and you'll have a better gaming experience.

It's annoying when people read a few forum posts and all of a sudden the whining and complaining becomes the "majority" and then "general consensus." The majority/general consesus are playing Skyrim right now, not on the forums. There is a very small tiny percentage of players that frequent the forums, and only a tiny percentage of those people complain about the game.
