Non lethal brawls are badly done in Skyrim!

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 7:40 pm

First when I heard about the non lethal brawls I thought that I will be able to attack anyone in tavern or even in the whole city (apart from guards, king etc.) to start a non lethal brawl.

But then there are just about 10 npcs which you can have a brawl with.

Sometimes there are just npcs which are so annoying that I wish I could beat the hell out of them but I don't want to kill them because they're important!

Second when I have a brawl other npcs just ask to get hit, they get in my way, run around like crazy, and when I hit them accidentally (sometimes not) Everyone just wants to kill me and I get a bounty!

It would be better if they would just [censored] stay away when I'm fighting, and if I hit them they just join the fight or run away if it's an old lady or something until the fight ends, easy. If I would actually want to kill someone using my fists, it would start as a normal brawl but when they get on the ground I hit them once more to kill them, then I get bounty and other npcs attack me.

Third, they could have made the fights better, many times when I throw punches they don't even touch the npc but still the blood spills everywhere, and dragonborn is so [censored] at fighting, he just throws the same punches everywhere mindlessly, I myself could easily beat him up and 3 of his friends with one hand while drinking the beer with the other hand.
I don't say he should fight like ip man which would be [censored] COOL but I know bethesda guys are a bit lazy regarding fist fighting and probably they never fought so they think that fist fighting looks like holding invisible axes and hitting as hard as you can so i'm sure they'll never make fights so cool looking but they could just improve them a bit, because there is no improvement since morrowind or maybe even since older TES games (haven't played them).

What do you think?

Almost every feature in the game is lacking in some way.

as said before on here. man, people find every little thing to complain about in this game. is this really important? as you say, you can only brawl with 10 people, so is it that much of an pain? i could MAYBE see if it was for any NPC or whatever, but geez, if this is what people rant about then they are missing one hell of a game

Real tavern brawls are not lawful and are not necessarily non-lethal. You want to start a realistic brawl? Then punch someone who annoys you.

if beth isn't going to do it right, why put it in the game? if it is in the game, it is fair to put into the light and criticize/critique.

the only brawling i find satisfying is with khajiit. the claws wreck everybody. it's somewhat useful at low levels for a quick buck, but otherwise i don't bother. if it had fight night style controls though, i might be a professional fighter in skyrim.

I like the game and many features of skyrim but I won't post them here because what's the point? I don't want them to change it or something if I like it, I just post things I would like to be changed.

I'm just giving constructive criticism :D and I hope someone from bethesda one day will find this and other "complain" threads which I support, I'm giving criticism for the skyrims good, because I want it to get better and better, I don't post this just to complain and ask others to complain.

Has anybody ever actually lost a brawl? I've been in about 10 or so and none of my three characters have even come remotely close to losing one yet. I'm beginning to suspect these fights are rigged in the player's favor.

I did this few times in a pub and I just ran away before police came.
But in skyrim I don't see anyone calling the guards in the tavern when I have a brawl and I don't think they did in these times.
And I bet when guards have seen someone fighting on the streets in these times they didn't bother to do anything or just probably watched the fight. Law wasn't so good that time, in fact law was making peoples life harder.

I agree with the second point (because who stands in the middle of a fight going "Oh are you guys fighting?!"), but not the first point. For the first point you basically said you want to be able to get into a fistfight with anybody when that clearly makes no sense. Why is the kindly girl in Whiterun who just wants to raise enough money to buy the inn going to walk up to you and say, "You look tough, let's have a fight!"

Also, most bartenders, patrons, and other civilians aren't just going to want to fight you. This is not Roadhouse. Although if you attack someone with using your fists guards should retaliate with just their fists until you pull a weapon.

I love almost everything about the game, but non-lethal brawls and fist-fighting in general is done poorly.

For one thing, throwing fists around shouldn't take as much time as swinging a sword; it's a slow process, and, instead of cleanly punching someone, I feel like I'm throwing my entire arm at them (I wish I could train to use a punch animation that is straight/direct).

And I don't think it should always trigger attacks from the guards (especially if you're fighting with someone who clearly doesn't require assistance from the guards; say, a mercenary).

I know that so when I hit somebody he/she should fight back, run away, run to the guards, or ask for mercy depending on who they are.
And guards should only react when someone asks them for help.

I like how they say no magic, yet healing yourself with a spell doesn't seem to be considered magic.

But the brawl system isn't designed for that. There is a difference between an openly agreed upon fight and just running up to someone and punching them in the head. In many states you can have a fistfight in the streets if you fill out the right paperwork. But since Skyrim has a lack of insurance waiver forms they just made so you have to agree to the fight.

Lol that reminds me of the hired thugs. They were slashing and hacking people in the center of a town with giant swords and shooting people on the head with bows, and the guards still just watch.......

TBH, I think the fist fight in The Witcher 2 is pretty good. At least Bethesda can add more animations to fist brawls.

And how would guards know if someone agreed to fight me or not? They probably wouldn't notice it until few punches would be thrown.
Even in the fights which already are in the game you don't go to guards to tell them that you agreed to fight.
And surely if someone fights you back it means that he did agree for a fight, otherwise he would just run away.

That's true, although I think the guards don't show up because people hear you agree to the fight and no one calls them. But just because someone fights back doesn't mean they actually agreed. It's a natural instinct to fight or flee when attacked.

The only problem I have hit with brawling, with the whole game so far has been I cant react to NPCs talking rudely to me. I would love to have an chat option that escalates the situation. I hate how at level 40, Im the toughest person in the town but all these NPCs can run their mouth and I cant respond. Especially if Im thane and such. Just a little RP in these situation would be nice but it definitely isnt a huge deal breaker, and it definitely doesnt impact play for me. I am still in awe of this game, great job imo.

I like roadside kill. It complements a tall glass of bear nicely and provides me something to chew on whilst I gulp it all down.
