NVIDIA 301.24 BETA Drivers, any good for Skyrim?

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 7:48 pm

NVIDIA just released the 301.24 drivers that claim to improve performance by 20 in all games, http://geforce.com/whats-new/articles/nvidia-geforce-301.24-beta-drivers-released/

Anyone try them out yet, any good? (Haven't got the time to try them out yet)

D'loading now, will report back soon

Mmm, Tested before and after in two places where my FPS was different.

Before new driver:
Just inside Whiterun gate ~ 40fps
Just outside Riften 50 ~ fps

After new driver:
Just inside Whiterun gate ~ 40fps
Just outside Riften 50 ~ fps

My general FPS does seem to be more consistent when running around with the new driver (maybe placebo?)

Anyone who installed beta drivers I really want you to do a favor for nvidia players. Can you take two screenshots of same scene with 1) ingame FXAA enabled and 2) FXAA enabled through drivers (and ingame is turned off), please?

The release notes and nvdiai website both state that if a game natively supports fxaa then the nvidia control panel cannot be used to enable/disable that setting. The nvidia control panel's fxaa setting is only for games that do not have built-in support for fxaa.

@Javi

Unless you gonna help give feedback on these drivers, you can leave I don't want Fan Boys coming into this thread saying that "omg ati svcks or nvidia svcks cuz it just does", I'm not interested. ATi and NVIDIA are equally good and yes NVIDIA has had there string of bad drivers too.

Anyway FXAA can be enabled in any game, regardless of wheather the game supports it natively or not.

Been using the new drivers for a couple hours now. Very smooth. I had many small stutters as cells were loading. And also large slow downs when entering/exiting the cities. Those are all gone now.

The release notes specifically mention more speed improvements for skyrim, and it looks like nvidia has delivered. This week just got off to a good start. :banana:

The difference is where you enable fxaa. If the game natively supports it. You enable fxaa in the game launcher or when the game is loaded. If the game does not natively support fxaa, you can enable it in the nvidia control panel.

Dang I'm gonna have to try these then, I'm originally holding off because I want to see if they caused the Pink Screen of Death that 296.10 did, I think NVIDIA said this is fixed in 301.24 so I think it's clear for me to install :biggrin:, I'm keeping my special set of 295.73 just incase though.

@GreyNap, Ahh I see.

Installing now. It's a shame I didn't know about these this morning, of they were out then. Just played like 7 hours straight skyrim lol, don't feel like playing again now :P

It's ironic you see, I had a 6870 a week ago :P

Ok the drivers. As I said before I'm burned out of skyrim, but just tested with GTA IV EFLC. Was playing before and having the usual ups and downs, limiting my fps to 50 for smoothness though.

Bang, new beta drivers with FXAA (works by the way, finally less jaggies!!), game looks better and honestly plays better to. Smoother if you can believe it lol.

So if they can help with that pile of port turd, I have high hopes for my Skyrim :)

Wow. Hadn't thought about gta iv for awhile now. I remember the 1.0.6.0 patch made a huge difference in performance. It only took them 6 months, but that's beside the point 8-)

And there were all those weird lines in the shadows under the 'el' in bohan. Might have to get this character in skyrim finished and load gta. Now if only gta v would come out this year!

Well I'm back, just tested these drivers.

Played some Skyrim and it is alot smoother, not so much a change in Frame Rate but it's alot smoother.

Offtopic but I played some Battlefield 3 and it's smooth as silk.

The beta drivers made my game run at 10 FPS for some reason, even on mainmenu.

On a Zotac geforce 580 here.

Edit: Even makes WoW run at 10 FPS..Guess the drivers are just a no go for me D:

"Improve performance by 20?" That ought to be enough for a level or two at least.

Well turns out these drivers are junk for me, they have the same bug 295.51 and 296.10 had: Pink Screen of Death also known as corrupted pixels, back to 295.73.

Is GTA worth getting? Can I play it with my xbox controller? Is it going to blow on my 6970 ya think?

Have you uninstalled your current driver, rebooted, and then installed the new driver? nVidia driver installs leave files and registry settings behind when installing one driver on top of another.

Also, consider Driver Sweeper. It will clean out all the left over bits and pieces, and make sure you only have files and settings from the current driver.

@GreyNap

I clean every thing NVIDIA related after reinstalling, and NVIDIA has confirmed that this is a bug anyways.

This driver is also bugged for GTX 580, driver failed to init proper power states for those cards, any 580 users have to rollback.

Using a GTX560TI

Downloaded them immediately yesterday, no changes to any settings. Saw an immediate drop in FPS in cities but here is the really bad part load times went from 2-4 seconds going in and out of doors to as much as 15-20 seconds.

Nope this is actually one of the extremely few times i rolled the drivers back.

Stay away from these beta drivers, and probably the release drivers if you don't want 5 times the wait for load times.

*Update Well this svcks all saved games seem to load slow now as well. How the heck could a driver do this?
