Obesity

Post » Wed May 11, 2011 2:00 am

obesity and tv watching are intrinsically related.

no tv = no obesity.

yes they are related.

but getting rid of it would not completely get rid of obesity.

the lack of it mixed with many other factors including most importantly, Limited food, would make an obese man a rare sight

Why are there no fat people in fallout? im pretty sure if war never changes neither does greed. And there is food EVERYWHERE even the bighorns are huge amounts of food. So your telling me there are no obese people despite food being everywhere. Just thought i would bring this up. Also it could make a good dlc about rich people sending mercs to towns to take all the towns food and take it back to the fat and rich slobs. So of course the town seeks help and so forth. :)

No food; No fat!

Cannibals ate 'em all.

I mean, who would you rather eat? A skinny person who runs really fast, or a slow-moving feast?

All kidding aside as there are some pretty good liners allready on here..

I would not mind seeing diffrent body builds myself it would add a bit to realism as how much you eat is I think pretty proven just as important as just what you are eating. Now the lifestyle is pretty rough but if say all you eat is pre war snack cakes and cola your not gonna have an athletic build heh.. And it would stand to reason that people on the upper end of the totem pole in a tribe would tend to get better portions and be healthier if not plan heavier.. Heh being fat or thin is sure not a new invention and up until well recently modern times chunky ment healthy and was seen as Hot... (god i love betty page mmmmmmm) opps err Anyway I sure hope when the get to kicking out 4 they will think about having a few more body builds.. As man its just sad that Old lady Gibbson well may have a little rust on her but one hell of a chassis.. (Side note anyone else wonder if they were stinging Mel Gibbson in gibbsons shack as they sure was a lot of booze and smokes next to him??)

say sayeth the stick thin man

Its all about design. 2 bodytipes would require 2 models for each dress, armour and so on. It would most probably require 2 sets of animations as well.

Fallout 2 is REALLY lazy then since it is basically the same as F:NV. It uses most if not every asset from the previous game, has a handful of new sprites and follows the same 'Find something to save my people only to save the world from some evil entity'

Fallout 2 is just as lazy :spotted owl:

(Prepares for someone coming at me with a strawman argument.)

*lights him on fire instead* :P

I think people are forgetting the real reason here...

New Vegas Medical Clinic

You just don't have a high enough fat check to see the liposuction option when you visit.

Well......you can force the game to stretch clothing and armor over different body types, but it makes some weird stretching in places and probably limits your design choices with the armor/clothing.

I'm not sure that the obese would fare well in a red-in-tooth-and-nail post-apocalyptic envioronment to be honest. I suppose maybe the odd Strip resident/Alistair Tenpenny sort might have the means to put on the pounds, but beyond that, people are generally poor and malnourished.

Putting aside the obvious technical answers, anyway.

The 'morbidly obese' trait would be ideal for those people who like to gimp their character:

- you can only run for 5 seconds, after which you have to find somewhere to sit or lie down
- you can't jump or climb
- you can't wear power armour, as you can't fit in it; for other clothing types, you have to find a tailor who can let them out before you can wear them
- in hardcoe mode you have to eat three times as much as anyone else
- you must continually find the correct meds otherwise there's a random chance of a heart attack at any moment
- you have to pay for two seats on the McCarran monorail

However, your mounds of blubber are able to absorb more bullets than a normal individual.

I guess that Obsidian was just lazy...

On the other hand it may be because pretty much all of that food you mentioned is full of protein and contain very little carbohydrates whichare real reason for obesity. While in Fallout 3 you could find Sugar Bombs everywhere, those are rare in New Vegas. Much less carbohydrates (ie. sugar etc.) means that it is very hard to get obese. Works in real life too: eat less carbohydrates and more protein and you start losing weight.

It actually has to do with the amount of calories you consume. You must consume or expend 3500 calories to lose or gain a pound so yes carbs do not help, but they are not the sole reason for obesity. You can eat all protein and if you eat too many calories you'll still gain weight. Just walking around for 3 hours causes you to lose about 1400 calories and I'm pretty sure these people walk more than that and include running and lifting and they probably can't gain weight unless they consume a lot of calories.

Poor food quality and quantity for one. Add in, most fat people move slowly and slow people get shot (in a post apocalyptic world anyways) . Survival of the fittest and all that. Now factor in medical problems, heart disease, poor circulation, ect ect. After a while a certain body type/condition would be akin to a death sentence. And lastly, fat people would have to have armor made specifically for them. Imagine if you will, a jumbo fat person trying to squeeze that bulk into power armor. Would end up looking like a can of spam left too close to a fire.

Laziness? No, not everything the developers don't do is "laziness".

I'd say recycling exact same models & a 2006 engine to create a "new" game in 2010 falls under laziness.

Some sort of realtime deformation lattice might offer minor, but noticeable size difference (could be more trouble than its worth though).

I can see everyone being skinny . You have Irradiated water , most all creatures in the waste will eat you , cannibal raiders not to mention lack of medicines hospitals doctors and the general harshness of day to day life . What surprises me is the amount of old people left you would think life expectancy would be 30 years at best .

People WALK everywhere in the fallout world. If you walk everywhere your gonna be thin no matter how much you eat. The only people you can expect to be vault dwellers, speacially in vault 101, obesity should be all over that hole in the ground.

I like how technical limitations can be explained with logic. I think that's what's going on here... Obsidian was limited in what they could do.

It's not that they were being lazy. If that were the case then I'm sure they could've been lazy it much more beneficial areas.

You'll find a few heavy-set dudes in Fallout 1&2...but, I agree that you should be able to alter your body type in this game.

In the game all human NPC's use the same animations. If a person was depicted as noticeably large, broad, or obese, the animations would look wrong. A big guy doesn't sit in a chair the same way as a 90 pound waif. The game uses the same animations for males and females as well. Creatures like Ferals and mole-rats, and robots [all non-humans] are the exceptions, and they do not interact with the environment or with objects, in the generic way (of all human NPC's).

Heavy set NPC's could be made with a lot of work... or could be ''cheated" in, by making them creatures. (possibly with a restricted AI)

I saw one of the Sloan citizens talking to Snuffles for some reason. He walked up to him and spouted one of his cut-and-pace one liners like he was talking to another NPC. I was a little worried about that guy.
