Obsidian this game almost is perfect for me.

I fail to see how having experience of earlier episodes of a game title gives opinions more weight or validity.

If I said "Rock III and Rocky IV are crap films" you can't then say "You have no right to say that; you haven't watched Rocky I and II"

Alien (the original motion picture) Written by Alan Dean Foster and directed by Ridley Scot - a classic sci-fi horror.

Aliens (the 1st sequel) not written by A D Foster, not directed by R Scot (James Cameron in fact) - a great film, in no way diminished by its new production team.

I have not played FO or FO2 - I had not interest in them then. I started with FO3, which is a great game. I have no opinion on the first two. FO New Vegas - sad, unfinished FO3 mod. It may have been produced by Obsidian but that means nothing to me, I just expected a release title built on an existing tried and tested platform to deliver more. Obsidian have shown themselves up releasing it in the state it is I'm afraid. No ammount of game studio fanboism nor game title elitism will change that.

I think the divide exists because you haven't played either Fallout or Fallout2, while many Fallout fans have, along with Tactics and BoS. Now, Tactics and BoS are both 'spinoffs' of Fallout and Fallout2. Many people who are fans of the franchise and who started with Fallout as opposed to Fallout3, like you did, would say Fallout3 is another spinoff because it doesn't follow the same style as Fallout and Fallout2.

I also think you refer to New Vegas as a mod because of it's similarities, though that would be like calling Fallout3 a post-apocalyptic mod for Oblivion and Oblivion a mod for Morrowind. All that would make New Vegas a mod of a mod of a mod...That you payed for.

Game beginning with Chandler shooting you in the head = not so much :)

Crucifying Chandler later = win.

No I refer to NV as a mod because it bears more resemblance to a mod (call it a total conversion if you like) in that it fails to improve upon its predecessor despite adding new features and is in fact a good deal smaller as well as being unfinished as a product.

Oblivion and FO3 do not compare in the same way being as they are both larger and of higher quality.

I understand the dedication and familiarity of following a title series though - I have followed The Elder Scrolls since the beginning, Were another game studio to make an ES game, it would taste a little weird.... but I wouldn't deny it accord were it duly deserving. :)

Fallout NV is quite simply a mod. A Fallout 3 mod. A glorified, overhyped, underdeveloped, mod with one outstanding feature that other mods lack - we paid for it.

I'm happy to pay full price for it.

No-one really pays much attention to people saying FNV is a mod, i shouldn't even dignify it with a response to be honest.

A mod which Overhaul the whole map.
A mod which Overhaul all the backgrounds.
A mod which Overhaul the design theory.
A mod which Overhaul the whole Main Quest.
A mod also Overhaul all Side Quest......

the list keeps on going

I mean, what you are saying is that iPhone is just an iPod mod....

Get someone who has been hiding under a rock for the past five years, get them to play FNV for a few hundred hours. (more might be needed to fully appreciate it)

Then, give them a copy of FO3 and say it was an open world explorer mod to FNV, based on fan fiction written by 15 year olds. See if they think it's plausible.

I realise it may be a novelty to have a game with a construction set if you have never experienced one before but its not a new feature and in no way elevates NV above any of gamesas's prior releases, particularly FO3, which is vastly superior in many ways. This is not simply my personal opinion but has basis in a number of undeniable and unfortunate facts:

Fallout NV is quite simply a mod. A Fallout 3 mod. A glorified, overhyped, underdeveloped, mod with one outstanding feature that other mods lack - we paid for it. And given the countless hours of enjoyment I have had from years of free user content for gamesas games, it pisses me off in no small measure that Obsidian have the bare-faced cheek to charge money for this crap at this point in its developement. Its a working beta at best, if not alpha.... and were a mod creator to release such an unfinished work without ascribing beta status, there would be hell to pay, even considering that mods are free.

Well there are not many mod-friendly coded rpgs out there and personally i wouldn't go as far as to call FNV a mod even though i feel what you mean.

Constant CTDs every time I do, well, pretty much anything. Average time to CTD is between 30 mins and immediately after loading (or during loading in a couple of instances)

FO3 had some issues too at its beginnings, i believe and hope they will fix most of them.

The map is small. Very small compared to FO3. They have cheated in several ways to make it seem larger :
-Sheer cliffs to block direct routes
-Invisible collision barriers atop the hills and cliffs to block direct routes (WTF? This is impossible for me to digest being an Oblivion fan, where the map is huge and you can literally go anywhere you like)
-Impossible opponents (Deathclaws) to block selected routes for lower level characters.
Add to that the fact that over one third of the map has nothing in it anyway and you are not left with much sense of scale - the world of New Vegas gets ever smaller with extended exploring.

Well, i totally agree (even though i risk being lynched by FNV fanatics), the map and most of the locations were a big disappointment imho. It also feels much less immersive for me.

In conclusion, FO3 is vastly superior

Even though FNV has certain aspects which are better, i totally agree.

I completely agree. But one thing they did leave out was the suprise effect from F3, and, call me a coward, I practically did piss my pants at times. I really think Obsidian should have at least kept in enemies like the Yao Guai, for they were the worst thing in the whole game, but also the most entertaining. I do really hope that they have something like that in the DLC, because I really miss cuddling with the recently deceased Teddy Guai.

I've played video games for about 20 years now, and no other game has gotten as close to being perfect as Fallout New Vegas has.

Here's a few reasons.

First of all the GECK, which helps fans create or modify content. This is one of the big ones.

Gameplay can be customised to your playstyle, wanna play a weak but goodnatured scientist? An Explosives Pyromaniac? Almost anything goes. IMO done better than FO3 due to alternate ways through skill/stat checks to complete goals

Alternate Quest Completion Routes, you wanna rat on the guy that wants you to do bad stuff? go ahead? Sabotage their plans? Sure. Some options seemed left out, although every contigiency can't be thought of, and just sometimes buggy.

The only two things I thought FO3 did better than NV, was immersion, the radio updates don't seem quite as regular on your acts as FO3, and the radio host acts more passively, so most of the time I have the radio turned off now.

Random encounters also helped immersion, because it gave you empathy and urgency and a sense of danger, since anything could come out at you. Or for you. Missed this in NV immensely.

Story is rather a moot point for me, since quests are like mini episodes, where you forge your characters identity through actions, rather than other RPGs where the game explains who the amnesiac is for you.

But yeah, love the game, hope you have a big patch and DLC in the works, because you have a strong base for an amazing game here.

i completly agree with most parts. For the radio i either have it tuned to the other radio or i have my own music such as pandora or my ipod or something. i find that with harder hardcoe mods that NV is much more immersive.

Something I find that I don't like about NV is that fast travel is disabled when overburdened instead of just taking longer... The whole point of Fast travel is to cut short the tedium of walking back to town, or traversing long distances between locations repeatedly.

Just a few niggles.

I'm APPALLED at the racism in this topic. It's true that there aren't many black people in this game, but at least the few that are there are presented as believable characters.

The only question I have is where are the Mexicans?

It's Arizona and Nevada, FFS.

There's a perk that enables that ability.

Though, in all honesty, I wouldn't want a feature like that at all - unless the "to"-fasttraveling was only possible between set amount locations like settlements and bigger outposts (instead of every possible location).

I understand that FO3 did some things better than NV, the story for example, was done better, I'd say probably the voice acting as well, except it was odd to hear the same person that did the Limelight kid voices doing the stripper at the atomic Wrangler....

In FO3 the immersion was done better I feel because of the more oppressive and destroyed landscape, the radio broadcasts, the map design, the random encounters, and if you saw a building in the distance, you most likely could enter it.

But ultimately it is my opinion that Fallout NV is a stronger game, but perhaps was rushed, perhaps was undertested, or perhaps was overambitious. But I still think that NV is a more interesting and enjoyable game for me, than FO3 before the DLC mods.

I am really interested to see down the road what they are going to do with the patches, apart from the bug fixes. Additional quest completion options? Open up previously unaccessable areas? Try to add things that they feel couldn't be finished in time before release?

Those are sold as DLCs nowadays. Well, except the additional quest completions, i doubt they are going to change. Nowadays very little, if any, new content is added in patches, the most recent example i remember was Sins of a Solar Empire 1.1 patch
