Obsidian this game almost is perfect for me.

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 6:22 pm

I've played video games for about 20 years now, and no other game has gotten as close to being perfect as Fallout New Vegas has.

Here's a few reasons.

First of all the GECK, which helps fans create or modify content. This is one of the big ones.

Gameplay can be customised to your playstyle, wanna play a weak but goodnatured scientist? An Explosives Pyromaniac? Almost anything goes. IMO done better than FO3 due to alternate ways through skill/stat checks to complete goals

Alternate Quest Completion Routes, you wanna rat on the guy that wants you to do bad stuff? go ahead? Sabotage their plans? Sure. Some options seemed left out, although every contigiency can't be thought of, and just sometimes buggy.

The only two things I thought FO3 did better than NV, was immersion, the radio updates don't seem quite as regular on your acts as FO3, and the radio host acts more passively, so most of the time I have the radio turned off now.

Random encounters also helped immersion, because it gave you empathy and urgency and a sense of danger, since anything could come out at you. Or for you. Missed this in NV immensely.

Story is rather a moot point for me, since quests are like mini episodes, where you forge your characters identity through actions, rather than other RPGs where the game explains who the amnesiac is for you.

But yeah, love the game, hope you have a big patch and DLC in the works, because you have a strong base for an amazing game here.

I agree on every count except for the immersion bit. I think that Fallout New Vegas is MUCH more immsersive than Fallout 3.

If they patch it up right, this could potentially be the best in the franchise. Maybe..

I do miss the random encounters. I thought they were a nice touch. But love the game overall :fallout: - the only thing I really, really miss from F:3 is Liam Neeson being my Dad lol

I can't play it at the moment due to a stupid XBox 360 saves issue, that said when I was playing it I was repeatedly thinking to myself that this game has to be one of the best I have ever played, which exponentially increases my annoyance with said issues.

That said awesome game when it works!

this game has true consequences .If ur a [censored] in fallout 3 ppl tell you u naughty boy and blah blah. Here u try doign that and theres hell to pay u can see the ramifications of your actions. In fallout 3 u can murder a certain faction u can still do main quest its just stupid lol.Although fo3 does have more stuff to murder/plunder.Only naughty thing thats even noticeable is in megaton and even then its like meh

Which basically means; better than 3. :P

Like I said, only maybe. I haven't experienced the game to the degree I've experienced the others yet. There's a certain depth that can only be reached through experience. I cannot say I've reached that level of experience yet.

I disagree about the radio, I mean it doesnt update as much but I hated three dog.. he was an obnoxious moron. I did however LOVE president eden's station.. he was the best voice actor in the game. Also, Im a little dissapointed there isnt as many enemies roaming the wasteland.. it gets boring sometimes. It wouldnt be that big of a deal if there were some more buildings just to explore and kill but there arent.

And Tactics. And BOS.

Yeah, I love this game. IMO, it's the best Fallout, except for MAYBE 2. Modded 2 that is.

In all seriousness, I agree with OP on all points except for immersion. I actually think NV immerses me even more than FO3 did. But that's just me.

I do miss random encounters though. Even though most of the encounters I came across in FO3 were rather "stale."

I agree that the complete absence of random encounters was a big letdown. Though I find New Vegas far, far more realistic and engrossing.

Yeah, I agree; haven't had that much fun with an RPG since... Vampire Bloodlines, I'd say. It's easily on par with F2, in my opinion, and a worthy addition to the classic series. The ambient music alone reminds me of the awesome moments I had with the old games.

I second the desire for random encounters, though.

I thought (mind you, for the most part I liked it, buuuut...) most of FO3 was rather stale- in the sense that I spent a lot of time with a running commentary in the back of my mind pointing out everything lifted straight-up from Fallout.

"Yep, here's the trading town with the self-appointed take-no-crap sheriff..." (First thought on first seeing Lucas Simms.)

"Yep, just saved Killian Darkwater's...er, Lucas Simms' life and made the town love me..."

"Yep, turns out main quest is really all about water..."

"Yep, saved the vault and then got thrown out anyway because now I'm dangerous..."

Shall I continue? I could go on for a couple of pages. :D

Okay folks, a few posts went away. First, keep your snippy comments about other members' spelling or grammar to yourselves. Secondly, try to think of ways to phrase things that aren't extra-vulgar and rude, mkay?

back to your regularly scheduled discussion.

OP well said. A solid and huge rpg that can entertain anyone for many more hours than the average game. And the best thing imo is that this game is mod friendly and can be customised according to each one's tastes.

Even though i certainly prefer FO3, it is a great and true addition to the fallout series.

The more I play the game the more I appreciate it. I like the varying paths quests can take (they're a bit more fleshed out than in FO3) and reputation is an interesting addition. If that could be overlaid onto FO3's greater ability to explore it would be a near perfect scenario. I don't care for the seemingly dumb-down weapons/weapons skills in FO NV though. They just don't seem as effective as in FO3 and the myriad of ammo types and reloading presses is more irritating than interesting imo.

My troll senses are tingling...

You mean your troll instinct? (Pointless post +1 /post count)

I'm glad I found this thread - I realise there are probably many already in existence on this subject but it saves me starting a new one just yet...

And so it begins... "In 20 years of gaming..."

I'm going to make a number of assumptions in this post, most of which I will at least attempt to justify in some small way. With reference to the above as an intro, I immediately assume you have either been paid to say that or you have only played one game prior to Fallout New Vegas, and that game was very small, very glitchy, and failed to live up to everyone else's expectations...

I realise it may be a novelty to have a game with a construction set if you have never experienced one before but its not a new feature and in no way elevates NV above any of gamesas's prior releases, particularly FO3, which is vastly superior in many ways. This is not simply my personal opinion but has basis in a number of undeniable and unfortunate facts:

Fallout NV is quite simply a mod. A Fallout 3 mod. A glorified, overhyped, underdeveloped, mod with one outstanding feature that other mods lack - we paid for it. And given the countless hours of enjoyment I have had from years of free user content for gamesas games, it pisses me off in no small measure that Obsidian have the bare-faced cheek to charge money for this crap at this point in its developement. Its a working beta at best, if not alpha.... and were a mod creator to release such an unfinished work without ascribing beta status, there would be hell to pay, even considering that mods are free.

Lets roll out the issues shall we?

Constant CTDs every time I do, well, pretty much anything. Average time to CTD is between 30 mins and immediately after loading (or during loading in a couple of instances)

The map is small. Very small compared to FO3. They have cheated in several ways to make it seem larger :
-Sheer cliffs to block direct routes
-Invisible collision barriers atop the hills and cliffs to block direct routes (WTF? This is impossible for me to digest being an Oblivion fan, where the map is huge and you can literally go anywhere you like)
-Impossible opponents (Deathclaws) to block selected routes for lower level characters.
Add to that the fact that over one third of the map has nothing in it anyway and you are not left with much sense of scale - the world of New Vegas gets ever smaller with extended exploring.

NPCs/creatures stuck in static objects and under ground meshes.

Broken quests - including some quest options being left open when they shouldn't be after certain quest stages are completed... and some quest options being removed prematurely thus leaving confusion over what you should be doing. Some quests don't even register as quests and are not added to the quest list in your Pip-boy.

The landscapes are below par and a back to back comparison of FO3 and NV was quite a shocker, considering FO3 was the platform on which NV was "modded".

On quest lines again, the ability to choose what quests you do and when is an illusion and some choices will actually inhibit your ability to continue even the main quest. In reality, it seems to be assumed that quests will be done in a certain order thus severly limiting the RPG experience. My opinion only but I am more and more seeing this as nothing more than a glorified FPS.

The voice acting for some NPCs sounds like it was done while bursting for the toilet (Sunny Smiles - is she on something or just desperate for a number 1?)

Ok, it does have some good points. The new character animations are better on the whole than FO3 and the much larger selection of guns and gun mods is pleasing.... So I ripped them out of the BSAs and put them in FO3 (my own game only, nothing illegal) which will do me nicely while I wait to see if they successfully fix NV.

The quests, when they work, are quite engaging and the number of choices you can apparently make is good for replayability at first glance.

My first impression was that it was a game I loved to hate. Now I just hate it and all sense of immersion is gone. Capped out at level 30, barely started the main quest with some aspects of it apparently broken due to some unkown events while I was exploring the very limited wasteland. I have some quests that I have also seemingly started in the middle with no idea of their origins or conclusion.

In conclusion, FO3 is vastly superior if you compare them as games. If you view NV as a mod, which I am choosing to do at this juncture, it has potential and I shall wait with slightly detached interest to see if they successfully fix it. I'm afraid, though, the assertion that NV is one of the best games ever made is lamentable. It is yet another example of a good idea poorly executed, something that has become one of the defining features of our age.

Completely agree.

Game beginning with LN being your dad = win.
Game beginning with Chandler shooting you in the head = not so much :)

Same here, I agree with th OP save for the 'immersive' quality of FO3 over NV.

***Also (seriously, and its an honest question), what random encounters in FO3?
The people (outside of town) either ignored you or ran up to you and forced dialog.
Do random encounters mean getting attacked by molerats?

Fake Vet who pretended they know Fallout no better...not you Giz, two post above you.

"Random" encounter is not so impressive once I realize it happens at "pointless" locations. I was keep think about two wastelander chasing a mole rat during the Siege to Jefferson Memorial.

Fake Vet who pretended they know Fallout no better...

I fail to see how having experience of earlier episodes of a game title gives opinions more weight or validity.

If I said "Rock III and Rocky IV are crap films" you can't then say "You have no right to say that; you haven't watched Rocky I and II"

Alien (the original motion picture) Written by Alan Dean Foster and directed by Ridley Scot - a classic sci-fi horror.

Aliens (the 1st sequel) not written by A D Foster, not directed by R Scot (James Cameron in fact) - a great film, in no way diminished by its new production team.

I have not played FO or FO2 - I had no interest in them then. I started with FO3, which is a great game. I have no opinion on the first two. FO New Vegas - sad, unfinished FO3 mod. It may have been produced by Obsidian but that means nothing to me, I just expected a release title built on an existing tried and tested platform to deliver more. Obsidian have shown themselves up releasing it in the state it is I'm afraid. No ammount of game studio fanboism nor game title elitism will change that.
