Old West Movies

Post » Mon Jul 04, 2011 9:20 am

Anyone here a fan of the movies set in the old west, like For a Few Dollars More? If so, what is your favorite movie, actor/actress, whatever in the genre? My favorite movie in the Western genre is For a Few Dollars More. My favorite actor is either Clint Eastwood or John Wayne. I think they should rule the world.

Although it's unusual and not thought of amongst westerns often, There Will Be Blood, and No Country For Old Men are two of my all time favorites. Clint Eastwood classics like Good Bad and Ugly and Unforgiven are entertaining everytime I watch. Of course I am yet to find a movie better than the HBO series Deadwood. If you haven't watched that yet, check it out.

I was never a fan of John Wayne, but man, the Dollars trilogy wipes the floor with most everything else... in any genre.

My favourite film of all time has to be For a Few Dollars More. Favourite actor... very tough choice between Eastwood and Van Cleef.

Pocketwatch showdown vs. graveyard showdown... also a very tough choice.

Clint or The Duke for sure. Damn near any Western they've been in has been great. I like The War Wagon with John Wayne, and Pale Rider or The Outlaw Josey Wales with Eastwood.

I really like the remake of 3:10 to Yuma with Christian Bale and Russel Crowe, but my all time favorite western is The Outlaw Josey Wales. It's funny how Wales spits his dip on everything.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is a good movie, but that's the main western that most people bring up so I feel like it's been beaten to death.

I loved The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Would I be right in saying that was part of a trilogy (or something similar) with A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More? I haven't seem any of them in years, but I remember getting confused over the order they went in. I really like Lee Van Cleef as an actor, thought he was so menacing, played the part of Angel Eyes fantastically. Gotta love Tuco though

EDIT: thinking about it I really haven't seen many Western films, so if anyone feels like sharing some of their favourites, I may go and check them out

Note that by Old West movies I didn't mean old westerns, I meant movies that takes place in the old west. I didn't sat 'Western Movies' because that could me misinterpreted as movies that were made in the western Hemisphere.
Oh, and Van Cleef is also awesome.

Has anyone seen True Grit? I'm not sure if it would be classed as Old Western, but it's supposed to be great.

Yep, it went:
A Fistful of Dollars (Eastwood as Man With No Name)
For a Few Dollars More (Eastwood as Manco/MWNN, Van Cleef as Col. Mortimer)
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Eastwood as Blondie/MWNN, Van Cleef as Angel Eyes, Eli Wallach as Tuco)

Tuco is awesome. Incidentally, Eli Wallach is 95+ and still acting to this day, as far as I know. :)

Tombstone is a great movie. Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday is one of my favorite portrayals of an actor. He did an excellent job.

I think that's where I was getting confused. I couldn't work out how the same person could play two different characters in the same trilogy, I was young at the time

I had no idea how old he was, that is quite impressive.

Once upon a time in the west
The good, the bad and the ugly
Dances with wolves
All other Clint Eastwood westerns.
Everything else.

And I hate John Wayne films.

I love both versions, though I will say the new one is a tad better.

No country for Old Men I could ee as a western. One guy chasing the outlaw or running from the Outlaw.

There will be Blood, though set during the time period less of a Western than the one above IMO.
I really enjoyed 3:10 to Yuma or whatever it was called. When I was little i didn't care fr them but now I like them.

Also the remake of True Grit blew the old one out of the water. I'm sorry but John Wayne is just to cheesey for me.

The original True Grit, as well as The Searchers are both amazing to watch on blu-ray with a 1080p projector.

The image quality is superior to many cinema screenings of 35mm prints at film festivals and retrospectives.
