One dissatisfied (and possibly forever lost) customer

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 4:06 am

I have to say, I am very upset with Bethesda. I have been looking forward to Skyrim for two years, and pre-ordered it for my favourite console (PS3) as soon as I was able. I picked it up and immediately played it for the entire day.

The game looked amazing. The graphics were awesome, gameplay was fun and varied, and like all Elder Scrolls games you had almost infinite possibilities right out of the intro. About 15 hours in, I started to notice a bit of lag. No big issue, as I was used to Fallout 3 and NV's constant lag, stutters and freezes. But eventually I got fed up as the framerate made the game literally unplayable. It looked like I was playing in slow motion, only the slow motion was playing at half speed. So I'm stuck creating new characters every time I get more than 15 or so hours into the game. But to top it all off, even on newly created characters the load times are absolutely ridiculous! At best, the loading time is only 30 seconds to a minute. But more commonly, I'm stuck waiting 2-3 minutes every time I fast travel, or enter/exit a building, cave, or town.

So what choice did I have? I took the loss of $64, and bought the PC version. Only to find out that the PC version is just as expensive! For every single new release I've seen, the PC version is ALWAYS $10 cheaper. But I bought it anyways, only to find out that I NEED steam to download and play it! I absolutely hate steam. I know many, if not most PC gamers would agree that they hate automatic patches on PC games, as some versions work better than others, or some mods are only compatible with older versions.

So not only did they release a game that doesn't even work on the PS3, they are forcing PC users to use Steam, and they must have an internet connection to download this offline game, even if they purchase it in a store. If Bethesda doesn't fix this lag issue with the PS3, and rethink their actions about sales they are going to forever lose a customer. But I don't think it'll just be me. I've seen the outcry both from friends, and online in multiple forums about the broken PS3 game, and being forced into using steam. The sad thing is not only will the loss of customers hurt Bethesda, but it will hurt the gamers too, because we're not able to play what is the best rpg in a long time, and possibly for a long time to come.

Well the problem lies in the PS3, not the game. The technology Skyrim uses murders consoles' ram.

Buy a hard copy. You never actuially have to connect to steam with a hard copy of Skyrim. If bloody course you need to download the game if you dont buy a hard copy.

HERP DERP, its a massive RPG game.... You must accept that within the first month or two there will be some glitches and you have to accept that ps3 versions of multiplatform games are on the bottom of the list for game developers so the ps3 version will always have the worst of it

Bethesda rightfully deserves all these conplaints for releasing such a crippled game. Yeah maybe we should just complain once and forget about it but that doesn't fix the game. One month out and still broken. Bethesda will leave a trail of slime wherever they go now. Sorry to ruin te skyrim drool session.

Boring rant filled with inaccuracies. You don't have to download the game from Steam if you bought it at a store, and you can instruct Steam not to auto-update any game you wish.

Isn't hard to not buy Bethesda games but at the same time don't want to turn it in right away because of how bull [censored] Game Stop is about it's new game return policy. But to me, Skyrim has gotten worse than Oblivion game play wise and I'm sure as hell not going to pick up another of this title.

Remember keep [censored]in about this game whenever u get a chance. Never stop, they purposely effed over tons of gamers and don't even own up to it. You may have wasted 60$ but u can still ruin bethesda's reputation with every post. Don't listen to the fools.

It's not the game, it's the machine running it. Do you not know anyone running it on Xbox or PC??

Yes, the PS3 is the main problem in that issue, but it's Bethesda's fault for releasing it while it doesn't work. There are millions of people who now have to shelf their Skyrim until it's fixed. DId they not test the game properly before they released it? If a game doesn't work right, simply don't release it until its at least playable. They could have released it for the PC and 360, but just held back on the PS3, similar to FFXIV.

Some people say that using Steam isn't an issue, but it really is. Its not a huge issue, but it is a major annoyance. They need to give players a choice of hard copy, or steam. I will not use Steam to update my game, and if it comes down to it, ill look at alternate unnamed sources for the patches.

People like you are the reason games today are flawed. People have stopped voicing their opinions, and are basically just taking it up the rear from gaming companies. There is no need to games to be broken on release, and for us to wait for patches. Before the PS3 and 360 games were no where near as broken upon release, because they couldn't be patched. Having the ability to fix bugs post release is no excuse to release a game before it works properly. People need to start voicing their opinions, and doing something about it or else gaming companies will forever be coming out with flawed, broken, inferior, or unplayable games. Again, there is no reason that we should be forced to shelf our game until its playable, or just accept the $70 loss and fork out another $70 to buy the exact same game on a different console.

If this type of thing continues from Bethesda, I may have to simply get their future games from alternate sources, and just read the forums until I can be sure the game is even playable before actually purchasing it.

I don't know where you bought the game, but Skyrim wa significantly cheaper than console prices for me on amazon, and steam is a very convenient service.

The only time steam becomes a problem is with Bethesda games and the like, where buggy games are given buggy patches which overall make the game more buggy.

Oh, let's all blame the PS3 which has a strong library of games even bigger and stronger than Skyrim. Let's all ignore the fact it has so many beautiful games and kick ass graphics and tell people that the PS3 svcks because it can't play Skyrim. Blablablabla. HERP DERP. Sorry but I'm not buying that PC elitism bullcrap.

Playing the game installed to my ocz 120gb ssd and the game loads in the blink of an eye... even fully modded out with texture upgrades the game loads within seconds.

PS: you can download the crack easy enough and not worry with running Steam if you so choose
you decide if you're a pirate or maybe you bought the game and feel intitled to playing it how you see fit ... so welcome to the Robinhood

It's really not even a minor inconvenience. It's a "set it and forget it" utility. To play the game, I still double click my TESV icon and click Play in the launcher. Automatic patching is a bonus.
