Thought this would be a fun topic...

Not sure how many of you were around during the 1980s, but the 80s were almost obsessed with the fact that they were the 80s. The best decade to grow up in IMHO... but everywhere you looked you were bombarded with the fact that yes it was indeed the 80s! And I know with divergence the 1980s were different in the fallout timeline than in real life. But the fact remains, in New Vegas it is once again the 80s! 2281...

Some of the music in New Vegas reminds me of 80s music... such as the ambient guitar music at Nellis and a few other spots... Wouldn't it be fun to think of a way to mash 50s SCIENCE with 80s pop culture?

Give me your thoughts and ideas... maybe we can make some mods that reflect this fact!

People in the 80's loved being in the 80's. Its the 80's in Fallout New Vegas. There should be something.

I just figured with all the threads complaining about NV, it would be fun to make a thread dedicated to an obscure reference and run with it for a bit.

Wait, what? So you're saying that because people in the 80's were happy about being in the 80's, there should be a mod for NV making everyone happy about their culture because the year has 80 in it?

I guess I kind of picture FNV as being something imagined in the 80s... since the 80s were somewhat obsessed with post-apocalyptic settings... It sort of fits the whole 1980's mentality to have a post-apocalyptic game set 300 years later, in the 80s!!!

Like I can actually picture FNV being conceptualized in our 1980s since it works so well.

Plus, some of the styles and other things in the game also look more 80s than 50s.

Look at some of the hairstyles and clothing styles in game, plus the armor. Much more 80s than 50s.

The best thing about the 80's was the lack of disco. The worst was the presence of MTV.

I think you're over doing the 80's nostalgia thing though. Post apoc? Fifties fallout shelters and nuclear disaster movies trump the 80's, I think. The music is distinctly 40's and 50's. The clothing is 50's and the Strip is 50's and 60's.

and the war started around 2070 so it would technically be the 70's
but yet again this is a different universe, so their 80's and ares are totally different

Yes but the 80s were obsessed with the fact that they were the 80s. Therefore for someone like me who loved growing up during that time, any 80s decade recaptures some of that magic... lol. As far as styles go I don't believe spikey and mohawk type hairdos were around during the 50s. That's a definite 80s thing.

And a lot of the clothing and armor doesn't look 50s IMO.

But regardless... it's the 80s!!! Hooray for the 2280s'! The new me generation. The grass is starting to grow again. Capitalism is alive and well in certain parts of the country. Civilization is growing up from the ashes. Now all we need is some nifty Divergent Electro-pop and sweet dance moves and we'll be all set!

the 80's were terrifying.....the entire culture was based around the thought that tomorrow might be the last day you live. The people who actually paid attention were paranoid nuts.....ever heard the song 99 luft balloons?

anyway, I don't see the connection either....seems closer to the era of the second world war to me but eh.....

I grant that some of the hairstyles are punk, but some are 50's librarian and some are 70's casual. What's missing is the 60's Haight Ashbury look.

Here's another little tidbit about the 80s... when they weren't busy being obsessed with themselves.... they were obsessed with the 50s!!! Eh? EH??? See, it works perfectly!

Love the MST3K clip by the way. One of my favorite shows. Though Hobgoblins was no where as horrendous as MANOS!

I think I just found the connection...it has little to do with "the 80s" and everything to do with being "obsessed with..."

I guess after reading this thread that if you came of age in the 80s, you'll see that as the best generation and will reference everything to that decade.

I think that's been true for every generation ... as long as you substitute their decade for the 80s.
