I usually completely skip over the main quest and travel by carriage to the city that has the main guild I plan to join for that particular character. I play the guild questline while also doing the radiants. Everytime I go somewhere new, I talk to the NPC's to pick up more jobs and quests to do.

I start the main quest and my civil war side of choice in my 20's when I feel ready and do those at the same time, still mixing in side quests.

Talk to Inkeepers, pretty much all of them will give you the starter for this one when you ask about rumors.

My first character is usually a wash character. I use him to explore, talk to people, and dabble in different combat styles. My suggestion, if you are lost, is to go to a major city, and talk to a couple of people, do some quests and see how you like it. My personal favorite is Markarth in the Reach. Beautiful city and hold.

As some have said, treat the main quest as you treat the others. Nothing special, just do it wjhen you have time from whatever else you may have gotten up to.

If you don't feel like touching the MQ (I reccomend you don't if you like to commit to quests, it will end pretty quick depending on how you play) or guilds (same thing) then I suggest to you go city hopping, each of the Towns...i guess have people in them that will send you out doing some pretty epic stuff, for example Falkreath has about 4 people that I can count out of the blue that gives some interesting quests, TALK to people, some of them will send you on epic journeys

.

K first thing you should do is, Take a deep breath, now exhale..., now return to normal breathing processes, find the highest point you can get to resonable, (just a hill or a decent mountain) in game and do 360 panorama on a clear day. when you're done with the many bodily processes you may experience you should feel exceptionally relieved and able to clear your head. now think back to that 360 panorama, what do you realize? if nothing let me tell you. ANY DIRECTION IS YOURS TO TAKE, JUST RUN but before you do that lets prep you for your asskicking.
  • Level 20 is puppies, get a few levels stronger.
  • Cover your bases, depending on what kind of fighter you are you can end up dead real quick if your not outfitted/perked up, resistances are only good for you and potions help ages, sharpen or enchant your weapons if you have no preconceptions about them.
  • Fell out your character, do you move alot? or do you stay in place when fighting? are you sneaky? do you have a set of steps you take when engaging enemies? consider these things and feel what works best for you.
  • be mindful of how far you do the MQ, each interation of the MQ's make exploring trickier as you'll see more and more Dragons.
  • Do you want Companions? they are decent guides and also are good fortune tellers (wrong word) their comments while your traveling can give you the heads up on whats around the corner.
Thats my recommendation, go out and talk to people in the Towns, and on the way doing their quests you'll find even more things to do, hope that helped ya.

Alright if your a Shoot now and smack with a sword later kind of guy this is what I can impart if you're planning.

POISON your bow, Stamina is by far the most useless poison I've come across why? enemies are still swift on their feet, can close distance real quick and their sword swings hurt no matter how tired they are, you on the other hand, Stamina is everything. so poison your weapons, Draing magicka for casters and Drain health for fighters. also don't be afraid to use frenzy and POISON poisons, draining health/magicka over time are also invaluable since it stagnates regeneration.

So you've poisoned your Target, preferably the TANK of the group aka the Boss, you'll usually be able to point them out either wearing full armor/helmet or weilding two handers. provided you have the time, get as many shots off as you can before the enemy is in 5 steps to you. in that time frame anyone who pulls out a bow needs to die, run them down if you can.

you regenrate Stam while running(not sprinting) so just abuse that to catch a breather, you do not want to tackle with +3 enemies at a time. if you are comng up against a group of enemies, kill the farthest one with the bow first, or atleast hit them critically. Counter intuitive yes I know, but if you attack the nearest and waste your energy on it, then the farther ones coming up fresh and ready to beat your face in will have little trouble with you.

Wow is no one gonna help this guy out? here we are a perfectly viable thread talking about the game and helping a new guy and a thread with blatant.....sigh lets just say priorities are lulz.

I have been training to level pickpocket because I have no desire to spend hours trying to level that skill on somebody who will never use it, I do want that 81 level cap, but thats far off. Just train if you do not have the patience for something.

I do take my time I go very slow and explore everything and roleplay.
I am playing as Dunmer right now his name is Aeris Drovell. He is an orphan who his father Other Lordiril abandoned, (yes that is my screen name Otheral could care less) and his mother died. Aeris is now 219 he was veri positive but became jaded when he met Otheral for the first time about 19-20 years ago.

He was overly positive but now has became accustomed to the world being a cold cruel place and he drowns his sorrows regularly with any alcohol he can find.

I am at a hundred hours right now. I level 46, I will get to level 81.

No he was very positive, he only got jaded after he met his father Otheral because Otheral shows him much disinterest and no emotion while Otheral gives all his love to Andoral his apprentice. Also Aeris is from Cyrodiil. He is different yes, he does not follow old Dunmer belief Other is far darker and far more sinister and ruthless.

I roleplay several different personalities and not all Dunmer detest everything and value their race above all.

Explore other cities and try to quick travel as less as possible. Talk to people and you'll be surprise by what they have to offer. Don't focus too much on quest because it is endless so just explore and do random stuffs cause that what's Skyrim is all about. Also, there is a CIvil war quest where they ask you to pick a side like join Stormcload or Imperials and I recommend you to not join any faction just yet because is more fun that way.
