Patch 1.4 20-30 min crash cycle.

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 2:44 pm

Hey all

New patch seems like it really boosted my performance. I do crash every 20-30 minutes of gameplay, it's not too bad since I save quite often.

The crash seems random, but every 20+ minutes. 3 times so far, 1, Zoned into a dungeon killed a few mobs and crashed. 2. I went to make tea, left my char in an inn, came back to see the game ctd
3. Zoned in the Fletcher store in solitude and crashed after I spoke to the merchant.

Anyone experiencing similar crashes?

***UPDATE***

It seems, when I untagged all mods, and took out the Anti-Freeze patch http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=2531 I was able to play for over an hour without a single crash on a brand new game. Note* The only things that remained were texture mods, and I ran Skyrim with SBW http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=4 during that time.

Feeling confident that the Anti-Freeze patch was the culprit behind the crashes, I decided to start up my previous save game, where I previously experienced crashes. After 65 min of gameplay, and as much zoning in and out I could do, while completing a few random quests. Slaying a dragon, and fighting 6 bandits at once. No crashes to report.

The only thing I could suggest to others experiencing this is to take out ALL Performance enhancing drugs... er mods, including DLLs.

No reinstall was needed. No lag to report either... well 6 on 1, slight stutter but unnoticable really.

Thanks and hope this works for you as well.

I haven't seen any "regular" crash cycle; been playing 1.4 for 60 hours since the first beta release.

I do get a crash every now & then, but I think that's more to do with the dodgy cooling on one of my 580s than anything else.

Have not seen any crash cycle. Only crash I have had, (i only had minor crash issues with previous version), was alt-tabbing. Otherwise running mostly smooth, an off/on occasional burp in fps sudden dive on a fast travel. (very rare), from 60fps ultra to 2-5fps, say maybe once in 8 hrs, but quickly recovers. No other crashes to report.

yeah I was able to play for hours without problems pre 1.4 as well, maybe the Skyrim Borderless window mod needs to be updated. I'll see what I can do to fix this. Thanks for the input

Yes to both.

Pre 1.4 I crashed maybe 3 times since November.
Today after patching it, w/in 2 hours I crashed 3 times.

Though, the performance is smooth and i get no lag spikes when playing. I'm at a point now where I'm afraid to even click on a door for fear of CTD.

I AM seeing significantly more crashing with the 1.4.21 update than any previous version. The only time the game crashed under 1.3.10 was during the occasional autosave (probably 1 in 100). Now I'm getting at least one crash every 20-30 minutes. It happens at all times - walking along a road, walking offroad, opening inventory, standing still doing nothing. There were many, MANY reports of crashing in the beta forum with NO response from Bethesda. This issue will only become more prevalent as people play the game under 1.4.21.

Edit: this may be due to the optimizations made to the exe cited in 1.4.15, in which case a performance hit might be the cost of an acceptable level of stability.

Same here, I could go days without a crash of any kind before the latest patch. I have had 3 CTDs in the last hour. Once when talking to Urag gro-Shub about the Elder Scroll, once when attempting to equip an amulet, and again when executing a sneak roll in Alftand.

 Optimizations do not decrease or increase amount of CTD or bugs, unless that bugs exist in game already and with optimization they appear faster, this is really possible with this game, as it's badly coded multithreading.

Well I hope there are more people out there with this 'bug', um in a good way. The more people there are that report this sort of CTD the better chance there'll be to fix it. Thanks for the input, glad I'm not alone in this.

Exhibit 1
20 minute crash cycle

Exhibit 2
15 minute default autosave interval

Could be a coincidence, could be an issue with disk access in the background, introduced in version 1.4. Based on when I am seeing crashes (starring to move right after a manual save), I think it's the latter.

I'm getting those CTDs too. I'll try testing a new character without any mods active as soon as the Nexus Mod Manager works again for me (somehow it crashes...haven't changed anything since yesterday. The DL page on the nexus seems to be broken too, so I guess it could be a temporary problem).

I had occassionaly crashes with the pre-1.4 patches, but were fixed by SkyBoost. Now the crashes occur randomly (once after trying to open the inventory, all the other times after Fast Travel or after leaving/entering a hous or cave.)

I'm getting regular CTDs now lso, after about 45-60 minutes of gameplay...what is really odd is that I didn't get this using the beta game versions (and when the beta was lifted no files were changed)! Therefore, I am starting to suspect that the latest 295 Nvidia beta driver may be the culprit (installed just 2 days ago). I will rollback to previous driver and test this out, and report back. Perhaps, anyone else in same situation who can test this also? Results from only 1 person don't really mean much.

The file version may not change, but that didn't mean the oficial patch didn't include an extra steam update. That wouldn't change the file version but could affect stability.

EDIT: Not an expert on this anyway, I'm yet at 1.1. Was thinking on updating finally after the hype of the beta version, but this CTD thing looks quite scary :unsure2:

If you are using the latest SKSE (1.4.8) you may have CTDs and freezes. This version is unstable with patch 1.4.21, lots of people complain at skyrimnexus. A beta version of 1.4.9 is available, you may try it. The only other way is to play without SKSE.

Any of you who are crashing, are you running any mods?

If so, try the game with no mods selected.

Also, try a new character, both with no mods and then add any mods back one at a time.

Normally I'm using SKSE and SkyUI. I managed to start a new character without any mods and SkyUI+SKSE and played 1-2 hours including Bleak Falls Barrow. No CTD.
I guess it's really a buggy SKSE now. Thanks for the link, I'll try that one.

Yup, been crashing every 20 minutes or so at random. Also game freezes during loading at random too and I have to force quit Skyrim. This is with vanilla Skyrim. No changes to my computer since version 1.3 and the 1.4 update. This update does have better performance, but man is it really glitchy now. I've had a stable Skyrim for months now, and this update has really screwed up the game for me. Dragons keep clipping through the ground with this update too. Mining ores doesn't work anymore. What the heck is going on?

Personally haven't gotten any real issue with CTD's although a couple over then last week since I started using the beta, but I do encounter Massive frame rate congestion on long play times. Roughly an hour of consistent playing and I hit a point after a cell load where my frame rate drops to about 10 fps, (normally 50+). it will remain at this very sluggish frame rate until the game is restarted.

Same here. I really wish Bethesda would put more emphasis on quality assurance and less on ramming this Steam integration BS up our ***.

Before the naysayers chime in, I've removed all mods, generated new INI files, checked integrity, reinstalled video drivers with driver sweeper, and started a new game. MSI afterburner indicates my video card is never above 68 degrees (I have excellent cooling.) NOTHING has changed on my PC, but Skyrim is now effectively unplayable. Constant crashes (every 20-30 minutes.) I could play for DAYS (OK, like 5 hours or so) straight on 1.3.10 without a single crash.

This is before you consider that every other spoken dialogue now cuts out and sound glitches constantly. Stuttering more than before also. Plus some "cannot innumerate mod list blah blah steam integration blah blah" at startup.

I'm really starting to lose faith in you guys.

...and started a new game.

Yep. Same thing. =(

Apparently the sound cutting out glitch was a known issue with this patch in the last version of the beta but they released it anyway. The crashes are definitely patch related as well.

Just out of curiosity what are the system specs? Are you using onboard sound, hardware acceleration? Are those drivers up to date?

Mining ores doesn't work anymore.

This is my problem too. I am also having issues interacting with other objects like the focal points in the college, bookshelves I own, and an occasional button or lever. I reported this during the beta, but apparently that was not enough to hold it back, or God forbid, fix it. Why even have a beta, if the feedback it's going to be ignored?

As a workaround for this, you can equip your pickaxe and "attack" the seams. Very useful if someone else is mining the seam: you don't have to wait for them to move away!
